      I had found a treasure trove of high quality scans of Jugend 10-15 years ago that were downloaded onto my parents old desktop computer that was lost/trashed in a move. Coming across your channel 2yrs or so ago I was reminded of so much amazing art I had saved on that computer as a young teen. And subsequently reignited a great interest in me.
      Thanks again Pete, can’t repeat myself enough lol such an amazing time and person to bless us with such a resource with such an ease of access.

    You really have created a most wonderful channel, thank-you! I have always thought illustrators were not truly appreciated for their talent. Coming up with striking images needed to illustrate the written word is a huge challenge that few do well. And the public/working man decides their value. Love your work!

      Hello and thanks a lot for your appreciation of the channel. And naturally enough I agree with you absolutely about the value of illustration in society. It drives me nuts that many consider it a poor relation of 'proper' art.

      @@petebeard Hi Pete: Thanks for your response, you are a scholar on these things, and I am a fine/commercial artist. Fine art often is just the person's self expression (for better or worse). Sometimes they discover great things, like the impressionists. Illustration tells a story, often with archetypal meanings that resonate widely with an audience. It really is the art of the people! And often with a deadline, it forces the artist to explore different creative ways to make a point visually, and bonanza! A new style is born! Keep up your fabulous work! We love it!

      I can think of two cross-overs at the top of my head. Michelangelo, who was commissioned to illustrate the Bible on the Sistine, and Andy Warhol who was a graphic designer and started doing his work BIG! Maybe that is the determining factor? the bigness of the image?

    The Roundabout Of Exploration,
    And every stop is a sensation.
    Pete Beard shows artists, some unknown,
    But every one worth to be shown:
    Herford, amusing, gentle, light,
    (Except: that monster looks a fright!)
    Genty’s art - charming, atmospheric,
    Whether depicting horse or cleric.
    Transport posters Newbould favoured
    And his art the public savoured.
    Wheeler? Blyton’s Famous Five,
    Her drawings made books come alive.
    Thank you, Mr Beard, so much.
    Next Roundabout we’ll be in touch.

      @@petebeard I know it's the "Unsung Heroes" who drive this whole series, but I think you could add another string to your bow (or is it launch a second arrow from your quiver?) with programmes for each subject.
      BTW you can afford to slow down a bit! In episode 35, with my finger poised ever on the pause button, @11.45 there is an image of a coach pulling up before a cottage on a hill. This was one of a series of ads for '43' cigarettes by Huergo, and whilst the symbolism is completely lost on me, I thought the image was spectacular. I would NEVER have seen this without your efforts, Pete. Thank you SO much.

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  3 года назад

      Hi again and thanks again, but can you clarify your comment a bit for me? Along with the unsung heroes there are quite a few on specific styles/aspects of illustration as well as some individual videos about particular illustrators. Is that what you mean by 'programmes for each subject'? Or do you mean I should do every illustrator as a stand-alone video? And similarly I'm not sure what should be slowed down. Do you find the pace too brisk or do you mean I should post at greater intervals? If it's the jatter I can't comply as there's too much to get through and I'm on borrowed time as it is. Anyhow I'd be grateful if you'd let me know as I genuinely want viewers to enjoy the content (although as someone said you can't please everybody so you have to please yourself).

    • @greghill7759
      @greghill7759 3 года назад

      @@petebeard Forgive me, Pete. You're quite right. You HAVE diversified into art styles and single illustrators, war propaganda and fantasy, etc. It's only that I can't remember a whole video on travel posters from the 'golden age of rail', one on children's fairy tale books, or Arts and Crafts illustrations for instance, (although these are only my personal favourites), but HAVE cropped up in different videos, including a memorable one on Arthur Rackham.
      "... post at greater intervals?" Good god, no! Keep 'em coming!
      I wouldn't call the pace 'brisk'. Your delivery is very well paced, but in order to appreciate the images and take in detail, one has to pause frequently, and this can sometimes interrupt the flow of the commentary. But I'm happy to go back at the end of each video, with the sound off, and pace myself. The fact that we have access to these images at all is due solely to your efforts.
      This is merely a personal perspective, and you should obviously do exactly as you see fit.

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  3 года назад

      Hello again and thanks for understanding how hard it is to please everyone all the time. That's why there are some travel posters in the art deco video and some fairy illustrators in the once upon a time video. I never know who has seen what or how specific to be so as I said in the end I just make the ones I find interesting. Funnily enough I did start one about travel posters but decided it was just too esoteric. Other subjects too, but there just isn't the time.

    I hadn't seen much of Herford's work before, but I remember some witticisms attributed to him.
    Accosted by a salesman in a clothing store, he was asked, "Coatings, suitings, or shirtings?" He replied, "No, only a few paltry collarings and cuffings."
    A female admirer gushed, "Oh, Mr. Herford, I do so admire your coterie!" He answered, "Well, right next to it is my vestry, and underneath it are my pantries."
    An acquaintance criticized a garish necktie he was wearing; he explained, "It was a whim of my wife's." "Why don't you just take it off?" the friend asked. "You don't know my wife," he replied; "She has a whim of iron."

    Another very enjoyable episode. Dorothy M. Wheeler's work brought back memories of my literary diet as a child in the 60s when I was blissfully unaware of all the controversy surrounding Enid Blyton's books, which led to the BBC and some libraries banning her work. Anyway, I certainly enjoyed those simple adventure stories and emerged unscathed as far as I can tell. That would be the ''ligne claire'' (or clear line) technique so popular in the Franco Belgian school of illustration at the time. I grew up on that stuff ... Asterix & TinTin.

      Hello and sorry to butt in but yes it's the ligne claire, and many seem to think Herge started it. But he just refined it to suit his own purposes (and of course he has since been emulated and refined. What goes around comes around, somebody said.

    I particularly like the Frank Newbould and Genty illustrations and think it a pity that Dorothy Wheeler obsessed with the Enid Blyton illustrations, though it must have been lucrative. As children we were discouraged from reading Blyton and I must admit I find the illustrations although competent rather gestural and empty, which her earlier work was not. Strange really how careers affect us all who are \/were professional artists in various media. Platitude!

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  3 года назад

      Hello and although I try to keep my personal opinions about the unsung heroes to myself as much as possible, it wasn't easy to not express my dismay at Dorothy Wheeler's stylistic fall from grace. Considering the compromises I made in my own career just to stay in work it would have been more than usually hypocritical.

    Hello Peter. Thank-you for all of the videos on Illustrators. I was wondering if you were going to do any videos that include a couple of women illustrators Ida Rentoul Outhwaite and Pauline Baynes? Kind Regards

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  3 года назад

      Hello and thanks a lot for your appreciation. I hope you'll be pleased to know that Ida Rentoul Outhwaite has been on the list for a while now and her work will feature in a few video's time. And regarding Pauline Baynes there's no reason you should know this but I confine my range for the unsung series to those born between 1850 and 1910. So unfortunately she was born too late to qualify. However that doesn't mean she won't feature in some other context down the line. And thanks for both suggestions - if you have more I'm always pleased to hear about them.
