That was an excellent result. It’s always good when a plan works.
The purchase from the auction was at a very good price irrespective of the grading outcome.
In terms of keeping it or selling it for a profit that really depends on what you want to do next. If you can replicate picking up a proof sovereign(s) at the price you paid for this one and then brining them up the value curve through grading then sell it. That could act as a test to see if you can make money.

Yeah nice when it works out as you planned. That's a good shout, I might see if I can find another few at auction to test out then could sell them.

Back in 2019 I bought 16 flawless proof sovereigns of different years ranging from 1979 to 1999. Only 5 came in cases and all were purchased at spot + 2%. It pays to buy them outside of the UK. Being proof only coins with relatively low mintages, they make a wonderful collection of which I am quite proud. However, my chances of increasing the collection are very slim now as the supply has dried up. Much earlier, I got 1989 and 2002 proof half sovereigns when they weren't considered special, also at bullion prices. I do believe it's pointless paying for coin graders to tell you the coins are beautiful when it is already obvious. Slabbing only makes sense for older rare coins.

Glad you got some of those special year sovs for good prices, you will do well in the long run.

I also think that you should keep it. The value of gold and top grade sovs in particular will only rise in the long term, so if you decide to sell it then you may regret it. Was the conservation carried out by NGC as well, or by another specialist? I’ve used both, much to my satisfaction. Well done to you.

Seems like an overwhelming result to keep it 😊. It was done as part of the grading process at NGC.

    Nice work and great result!
I’m looking at doing the same with any ‘tired’ Makloufs and other special dates I come across at a decent price
Never had a coin conserved before so good to see it can work
I’d keep it if you can

Thanks. Not sure if the coin needed conservation but I think it's standard approach with coin that are a certain age. Keep me posted how you get on with anything you send off.

Thanks. 20 percent is crazy but why doesn't that surprise me with the mint. Makes the 6 percent I paid seem like a bargain.

Only sell very rare coins at auction ,,selling sovereigns you always lose to the commission 😮
