This game brings back so many memories! I remember playing it at a friends house on his huge IBM pc. His dad worked at IBM so he was one of the few to own such a beast of a pc. I remember to be amazed of the movie-alike short scenes. Nowadays that would be no more than an animated gif. Thanks for bringing back the memories!

I was thinking about this game recently (I don't really know why) but didn't know the name. I just remember the gameplay, and how often I played it as a kid on my Gateway 2000 machine. I never thought I'd be able to find anyone else who knows about this game. This brings back very vague memories, but mainly the memory of me being a kid and playing this on my family's very first computer. Thank you for reviewing this!
I saw a few of your videos prior to watching this, and was seriously debating of leaving a comment on one video asking you if you know this game. All I knew to describe about it was that you were a guy in white overalls with red boots going around town shooting people either because you were the bad or good guy. Body parts of those whom you shot would fly up in the air. This is all I remembered from about it; I don't even recall the beginning scenes or the objective. I'm so glad I looked through your videos. You, sir, earned a sub!

Fond memories of old dos games a time when getting it running was half the fun factor and going wow it works ! I use to tinker with settings like this to see all the games glory ega, vga, svga and many more video settings and sound setting were a challenge in these older titles it seemed but I liked that cause you had to do more then pop it in.

Quite possible that the culprit was the graphic card. At those times, scrolling was normally done by screen origin offsets, and here it's copying nearly fullscreen to VRAM (probably the reason for the thick edge), that was awfully slow until several years later.

I remember drooling over this when I saw it in a magazine. I never knew it was on Amiga, to me it was one of those PC games I always wanted to play and it looked amazing for the time (at least on screenshots). I just checked Amiga version and it runs slightly better, the movies are black and white though.

    • @lurkerrekrul
      @lurkerrekrul 9 лет назад

***** The Amiga version was a major disappointment to me. I saw the intro running in a store and it didn't look any different than countless FMV loops on the Amiga, but when the game came out, all the movies were B/W. To top it off, the game sucked.

256 colors was the best in the industry for a brief period of time. It was better than any console or the Amiga which usually were limited to 32 colors (even when they technically could do more, the game industry just didn't use that)

LargoDono I think on slower computers you had an advantage that the game was actual slower. Retaliator is one of the greatest game ever. In the end you had to bomb a aircraft carrier and fight a spam of enemies. And ofc you could cheat by restoring your old progress when you failed a mission and died.

It's amazing how everythign has a shadow in the game.. and realistic ones too (i.e. not just black "dots"). I wonder how the game would perform if you were to disable shadows.

0:20 But this DOS version is the one that features the most interesting stuff as far as I'm concerned, with 256-color VGA graphics featuring digitized actors on eight floppy disks. Heh heh. I love that having a hugely inconvenient number of disks is a selling point.

0:35 Another plus is this box art. Good lord. What a prime example of over-the-top post-'80s cheese. I can't help but be enamored with it.

That robot is very reminiscent of Octon from Defenders of the Earth.

In 1989, Access Software came out with Mean Streets, one of the first Vga 256 games ever (by the moment I know that 688 Attack Sub was the very first one from march 1989) and with the great Real Sound speaker . Playing Crime Wave you can find "Mean Streets" advertisement on the walls . Haha I was actually thinking of the Sega Saturn game when you mentioned it in the last video. Looks like it would worked better a few years after when cdroms and faster cpus were the norm.

Bought and played this game back in 1990. It was pretty fun and had great graphics then.

Try playing it on a PC with 3D acceleration, or a 100mhz cpu.
That ending was epic. Dude never takes off his shades. Itagaki would be proud.

I played this in highschool, and it ran smooth. but we only had a 12 mhz 286, I don;t know why it runs so sluggish for LGR

It played smoothly for me as well on a 33Mhz 386 at the time. LGR got the special slo-mo version, ha!
