Afrika szerves része a Dél-afrikai Köztársaság, és talán az átlag is többet tud erről az országról, mint bármely másikról ezen a kontinensen. Történelmi fejlődésében, az Európával és a világgal kialakított kapcsolataiban, erőforrásaiban, adottságaiban, problémáiban és ezek kezelésében gyakran egyedi utakat jár(t) be, innen is eredhet ismertsége. Ahhoz azonban, hogy a klisséken túl az egyediségét, konfliktusokkal terhelt mindennapjait megértsük, sok időt kell eltölteni ezen a tájon. Szerencsés vagyok, hogy ez megadatott, 23 éve rendszeresen térek vissza kedvenc országomba, és ha nem is értem még tökéletesen, arra talán képes lettem, hogy rövid ízelítőt adjak azokból a jellemvonásokból, amelyek a Dél-afrikai Köztársaságot jellemzik.

The Republic of South Africa is an integral part of Africa, and perhaps the average person knows more about this country than any other on the continent. Its historical development, its relations with Europe and the world, its resources, its endowments, its problems and the way it has dealt with them, have often taken unique paths, hence its prominence. However, to understand its uniqueness and its conflict-ridden daily life beyond the clichés, one needs to spend a lot of time in this region. I am lucky to have been able to do so, I have been returning to my favourite country regularly for 23 years and, even if I do not yet understand it perfectly, I can perhaps give you a brief taste of the characteristics that define South Africa.
