    Even Beyonce needed her alter ego, Sasha Fierce, in order to conquer the entertainment industry. And peak performance coach Todd Herman, after working with hundreds of Olympians and champion athletes, has learned that alter egos are an absolute requirement for extraordinary achievement. On this episode of Conversations with Tom, Todd Herman details exactly how powerful the alter ego can be. Along the way he and Tom Bilyeu discuss the need for rituals, share the real stories of how they got where they are, and even explain exactly how to have abundant energy in every area of your life.

    Here are the lessons that I learned from this:
    1: We have multiple personalities / different aspects of ourselves. A different version of us comes out with different people and different situations.
    2: Alter Ego is the bridge between who I am and Who I want to be. Choose an Alter Ego to help me become who I am supposed to be. This Alter Ego does not give a s***t about anyone's opinion.
    3: To activate the alter-ego: It is easier to wear a totem or something that helps me remind me of getting into that state.
    3A: Make sure to not always run the same Alter Ego. Create another one that I am with family. This way I will not feel depleted or tired. Tiredness and lack of energy come from being one way in all situations.
    It is not about pretending or being a fake. It is about knowing that we have different aspects of our personality. We are multidimensional creatures and we can activate any aspect of ourselves if we want.

    Interesting conversation...thanks Todd and Tom. I use super heroes and spirit animals with my 3 and 6 year old granddaughters. My daughter does not let them watch videos very often. When I am with them they watch age appropriate super hero ones. We went for a hike once and it was hot and we still had a long way to go. My 3 year old granddaughter was tired and wanted me to carry her. ( I am 68 and no way was that going to happen). I told her, Remember..we are explorers, and there is nobody to carry us. She took about 2 minutes to rest and kept walking. I started a conversation about their super heroes..PJ Masks. They were instantly energized, told me all kinds of things about them, and before we knew it we were almost home. I learned alot that afternoon. It was a powerful experience for them. They were proud of themselves and I was proud of them too. I could tell that their confidence in themselves had increased. I will definitely pass on some of the info to them and my daughter.

I need to incorporate a lot more superhero inspirations to inspire them. They are 7 and almost 9 so have they have outgrown the little kids superheroes. Would love any suggestions from anyone on good female superheros for girls that age, or any other kind of strong, female movies or books.

    I literally have Elle Woods on my phone, in my car and on my door. When I'm tired or distracted I just think of Reese Whitherspoon's disapproving face and ask myself, "What would Elle do?" The answer is Study Hard, Stay Pretty. It totally helps to picture the scenes from Legally Blonde where she's on the treadmill studying, in the library late at night, etc. I know she's considered a ditz, but she was kind, caring, smart, beautiful, determined and everyone underestimated her, inspires me all the time!

    My identity shift character is me aged as a senior. I had a photo of me aged 30 + years. It is a trigger to remind me, that life is short and that I do not want to have any regrets at the end of my life. I also have a malleable metal bracelet that I have to touch to tighten several times a day. This was done by design, so it reminds me to read the inscription ‘Never Give Up’ and the letters are raised. I run my fingers over the letters for a deeper trigger impact. #mindset

      @Naomicri 4 года назад +1

      That mindset is not helpful unless you are chasing struggle and don't care about the money. The tried and true method for success is - passion, determination, visualization and belief. In other words to want something bad enough that you decide to make it happen and do whatever it takes. To visualize your goal in as much detail as possible. Not visualize the steps to achieving your goal but the achievement. For example if your goal is to buy a home, you would visualize living in that home as though you already do. The belief isn't necessarily that you already do live in that home, it's the belief that it is possible and therefore will happen because you are going to do whatever it takes and belief that you will succeed. Then you need to take action to move towards the achievement of your goal. And take whatever steps you can towards that achievement every day.
      An example that comes to mind is when someone says you can't do something so you do it just to prove them wrong.

      Ankit You get to choose the titles. The GREATEST Book of all time is called The Bible. It is essentially: The Word. The reader attaches the cover on the book. Do you ever see people buying the movie covers of famous books? Same concept. You may be into the more archaic primal feel of a tome of Sun Tzu’s Art of War. Instead of some picture of a man on the cover and flappy paperback feel. You decide how you get to work with the content.

      @@emiliocedeno369 I think you did not get my point. What I meant was that the way I take notes is to write little sentences that look like titles for e.g. "Changes happen from pain", "Some people don't care"... which makes sense when we're taking the notes because we remember the content associated with it. But as time passes, it slowly fades away from our memory and when we come back to it, the notes just seem like a bunch of titles.
      So I was talking about possibly a better way of taking notes.

    People don't realize how powerful this is, and the comments are just fixated on the guys talking rather than listening to what they have to say, especially Todd. This is one of my last pieces of my mental puzzle. I'd always hit a mental roadblock, not letting me persevere, and just fall short all the time, like there's always something pulling me back, and so I realized that the only time I get amped-up is when I act like I'm XYZ person while doing XYZ activity. And so I looked up alter ego videos, found Tim Grover, Joe Dispenza, and others, but none of them simplify it like Todd does. He's specialty is IN alter ego development. Multiple personas doesn't mean multiple personality disorder, or being pretentious. It's only a problem when you don't have control of your ego and emotions.
    Ego and emotions are a TOOL, a SERVANT, not a master. Emotions are actually your default setting... And when you understand this and learn everything you need to know about emotions and ego, you realize that emotions and ego are tools, and also they help each other out. Ecstatic emotions make you empathetic, you unlock empathy when you unlock multiple perspectives, and seek find root of problems to help others, and realize that everyone has a story. Great. Now you can have some form of emotional control, or how some folks like to call it, emotional intelligence. Then, there's ego.
    When you understand that ego is a servant and not a master, and humble yourself through empathy, you have a sense of ego loss. Almost like defeat. But its not. You graduated. Why? Now, you begin stopping acting in ego towards others, and begin being humble towards others, while using the ego on yourself, turning the tables around... Use ego on and for yourself, not on others. Empathy is the reason why you can have full control of ego. Ego can then have multiple personas to serve you. Not just 1, not just 2, but one in every aspect of life, or as many as you need per aspect. It all begin with curiosity, wanting to understand why something happened to you.
    Your first real traumatic event, which unlocks a perspective. Then work your way up the ladder, all stages of ego development, and find out that god is just a set of principles and values, and the devil is the ego without control. Every human being has those 2. Religion chose to make Ego evil, calling it the devil, which is hilarious because then you learn religion is actually one of the biggest frauds in human history. But im not gonna go there now 😂😂

    Very true about military men needing a dad suit. I love hearing this! My dad was a drill instructor and he brought it home with him and it was very difficult for us as kids growing up. I have many examples I can rattle off but this was a powerful Powerful observation. I love the idea that we can shape-shift AND play different roles like a performance. Love it.

      @@guitarsz what we're the pros and cons?

    • @guitarsz
      @guitarsz 3 года назад +1

      @@renitasmith3889 hi Renita. The pros: there was a meticulousness and focused discipline that he instilled in us from a young age. It really came in the form of our chores as well as sportsmanship. For example, me and my brother used to race BMX- bicycle motorcross (not motorbikes but pedal bikes) and we raced every weekend, fri, sat and sunday. One of the things my dad would make us do, is detail our bikes each weekend, this meant wiping down every spoke, the sprocket, you name it, it was cleaned. The bike looked brand new every weekend. This took about 15 minutes or so, which felt like forever for a kid...but things like that are really good examples. Even more so, my dad befriended the track owners and ended up getting a key to the track so he would take me out there on a Thursday night, flip the track lights on (think of a stadium lights) and then race me by myself to beat my own time. I don't know one other dad that did that. needless to say, I eventually because the number 1 rider in my district, even as a girl, beating all the boys. I was close to going pro before my dad was transferred to a place where there was no track in the city. So it was a sad end to an awesome trajectory I was heading down.
      The cons were, that my dad had a bad temper naturally and I think the military sort of exacerbated that. As a Marine, there are probably things a man is privy to, aka being trained for warfare, that make a man sort of have to comparmentalize their emotions. My dad had PTSD from a short stint in a combat area (don't know where) but he would drink a few beers each night to soften the edges of things. I don't know for sure if the military is responsible for my dad's temper, or his drinking, I think that was his choice, but as a disciplinarian, he was pretty tough. He taught me how to swim by getting in the pool with me and just going under water with me, not talking me through it but just counting to 3 and then dunking me. Which was terrifying. And even though i was terrified, he just repeated it a couple more times until he thought I had enough. Little things like that, were sort of traumatizing. I think it depends on the specialization, but my dad was a drill sergeant for a portion of his service and he definitely used some of those tactics on us growing up. We could never answer a call with "yeah!" no matter where we were in the house we would have to come to where he was calling from and say "yes dad"...it felt demoralizing at time, especially as we moved into our teens. There is way more I could say. In the end, I love my dad for all his amazing qualities. And I accept all his not so amazing qualities. But it def took some time for me to reconcile all those emotional wins and losses, injuries and triumphs...for better or for worse.

    Tbh, if you truly understand the personality types. Then it doesn't trap you at all, If you are an "introvert" it doesn't mean what most people think it means. It's just too deep for the average person to grasp, I had to go straight to jung to fully understand myres briggs. There's no limiting belief involved, because you can develop your personality to get almost any result you want. This is something almost no one understands, who uses personality types to label themselves. You're supposed to use it to identify cognitive patterns. Then with that awareness, you transmute.

    This conversation is phenomenal! Great episode. I did the Landmark Forum 5 years ago, and it is SO MUCH about these same ideas! There is even a section in that seminar called "the myth of 'is' and 'i" - which includes the idea of self or others as "fixed." When you uncover identity, and reveal blindspots about language and perception, that new awareness gives you space. Then you can literally INVENT yourself inside whatever possibilities you want to create. I love these ideas so much, and they can be very powerful especially in coaching work - thank you for spreading them! We can create ourselves over and over again.

    Another fascinating interview. Love the idea of the identities we can tap into, especially the example when he walks through the door at home. Thank you again for another great interview Tom.

    Pressure is something that you are applying to yourself, everyone acts as if it’s real

    • @katiie7
      @katiie7 4 года назад

      HG51 a lot of things are like that. Confidence, status, worth, ideals, most identities and preferences. There’s a layer of reality of truth and not everyone can access if they’re to weighted with their own self proclamations of false layers.

      Yes. Most pressure is self imposed. Type A personalities create the most self applied stress.

      Beach Town Reseller I don’t believe there are categories for personalities. At most similarities or innate average qualities but no categories.

    I am a German guy and by the way there are plenty words for spending: „Ausgeben“, „verprassen“, „Auf den Kopf hauen“ - just to name a few - and yes they mean exactly „spending“ 🤷‍♂️

    • @aleahgriggs5479
      @aleahgriggs5479 3 года назад

      Maybe he meant spent like "used up". Like, the money was all spent. All gone. I'm not German but maybe that was the angle? 🤷🏼‍♀️ Btw, I just started learning German. When I hear the language it always makes me smile.☺️ tschüss!

    My whole life (I'm almost 40 now)... MY WHOLE LIFE... I thought that it was something wrong with me and the multiple "masks" (as I call it) that I wear in different situations and with different people. I thought I wasn't being true to myself, bordering a possible mental illness. Now I see its usefulness, and how natural this is, and how I'm not alone (15:50). Maybe this was my "super power" and I didn't know! Thank you Tom and Todd!

    This is one of my favorites! I’m currently going through tough times. My husband broke his femur in Mexico and we got life flighted back to the USA. The stress of dealing with an injured person is indescribable. What really stuck with me is [don’t quit on it if it’s someone/something you care about].
