    Had the very great privilege of meeting Little Anthony backstage in mid 70's. He had beautiful lime green tux trimmed in yellow. I addressed him as " little Anthony" ...he said " oh, you don't have to call me little honey, you can just call me Anthony". We visited and it was such a big treat. He was so humble and personable. He signed my autograph book ( and he didn't usually give autographs because he didn't leave stage to do so. ) great time in my life.

    Rarely does a song. Any song. Send chills up my spine like this song does. I'm 70 years old. It sent chills up my spine when I first heard it on the radio and still does this to this day. Little Anthony isn't so little. I can't imagine anyone else singing this song so that it almost permeates out of his pores. If I witnessed him singing this to his girl then I'd fall to my knees and cry like a baby. Who says there's no power in music? Have you ever asked (begged) a girl to stay and she didn't? Case closed. With a life time of regret.

      And he’s singing live with an orchestra behind him. This means he has to project his voice high and loud over a distance. It’s a very hard thing to do. He has great talent

    • @johnlawler2455
      @johnlawler2455 4 месяца назад +1

      @@Stand663 This is live singing, but it could be the backing track (note the backup singers have no mic). Amazingly, the backing track or orchestra starts to slow in the first bar, then speeds up and Little Anthony doesn't miss a bit. The second line also increases it's pace and is in a different key (on purpose) in the record and the stage recording. Little Anthony again is unfazed. Absolutely amazing. Very close to the record in style, but there are small nuances that are different. I think this performance is even better than the record.

Here is Little Anthony expressing that pain more eloquently than any poet or any other artist can. The song was given to Little Anthony and the Imperials by songwriter Teddy Randazzo, according to a memorable documentary about Little Anthony available on RUclips. The reason the lyrics ring home is because Teddy was going through a divorce when he wrote the song. Little Anthony said it was his job to interpret the emotions of Randazzo. It explains the bitterness and hurt of some of the lyrics in my opinion.

    One of the greatest groups, with some of the best songs ever! I had the privilege of seeing & hearing them in a small club in 1968. I also had the honor of dropping a tray of Cokes I was delivering to their dressing room after the show! Anthony was gracious and luckily nothing landed on their cool suits. They have left us a beautiful, lasting and priceless legacy.

    I've always been in love with this song. Back then, the lyrics may have been simpler, but it didn't matter when you had the raw talent, and sang the songs with heart and gut. Really miss that, as a way of life with this music, but thank God we can still listen and have our memories. You can never go back. So much was lost as the generations came in. Adults didn't help with exposure to their decisions. We lived it, and soon we will be gone. 😌💜💕🎶🌹
