my husband died yesterday. this song kept running through my head. finally broke down and listened. had a huge cry. still feel like shit. the song is cathartic
I know exactly how you feel. One day I woke up and it hit me. I'm the oldest living member of my family. Everyone I grew up with is gone. The memories are pleasant but painful!
I'm just reading this in 2020 and hope that you are feeling better❤ These songs are all a part of our lives and do represent milestones. My condolences.
My elder cousin died last year, this New Year I had the same thought. What happened to all the Aunts and Uncles, Mums and Dads? Shit, out of all sides of our family I'm the oldest and only my son carries the surname forward.@@cjsansoo7
Had the very great privilege of meeting Little Anthony backstage in mid 70's. He had beautiful lime green tux trimmed in yellow. I addressed him as " little Anthony" ...he said " oh, you don't have to call me little honey, you can just call me Anthony". We visited and it was such a big treat. He was so humble and personable. He signed my autograph book ( and he didn't usually give autographs because he didn't leave stage to do so. ) great time in my life. 🎶💫🎶
Rarely does a song. Any song. Send chills up my spine like this song does. I'm 70 years old. It sent chills up my spine when I first heard it on the radio and still does this to this day. Little Anthony isn't so little. I can't imagine anyone else singing this song so that it almost permeates out of his pores. If I witnessed him singing this to his girl then I'd fall to my knees and cry like a baby. Who says there's no power in music? Have you ever asked (begged) a girl to stay and she didn't? Case closed. With a life time of regret.
I'm 73. I still remember his performance on Ed Sullivan. The song is haunting. It reminds us of our heartbreaks in our teens and 20's. Did I have one girl who I loved but she never felt quite the same way? Of course I did.
And he’s singing live with an orchestra behind him. This means he has to project his voice high and loud over a distance. It’s a very hard thing to do. He has great talent
@@Stand663 This is live singing, but it could be the backing track (note the backup singers have no mic). Amazingly, the backing track or orchestra starts to slow in the first bar, then speeds up and Little Anthony doesn't miss a bit. The second line also increases it's pace and is in a different key (on purpose) in the record and the stage recording. Little Anthony again is unfazed. Absolutely amazing. Very close to the record in style, but there are small nuances that are different. I think this performance is even better than the record.

He sings this song with such powerful emotion you can feel it, touch it, and you recognize the pain of losing a lover, you have felt it in your own heart. Here is Little Anthony expressing that pain more eloquently than any poet or any other artist can. It is a beautiful and exquisitely poignant song that pierces my heart each time I hear it and it does so because of the honesty and artistry in Little Anthony's soulful, powerful, immortal voice.
Amazing watching this clip ….still loving this song and artist from 1965 to 2023. Two days ago I saw Little Anthony sing this song as a senior it was pure tears of joy….just like watching this clip today. Pure tears of joy.
Little Anthony is the embodiment of greatness. And, from a strings/brass crescendo to the abrupt thunder of kettle drums to a subtle cha-cha in the beat, this soulful song has it all. One of the greatest songs of the sixties!
Little Anthony was capable of practically holler screaming lyrics under total control. He wasn't afraid to go there. I wanna hear someone go there again. Little Anthony said so.
The song was given to Little Anthony and the Imperials by songwriter Teddy Randazzo, according to a memorable documentary about Little Anthony available on RUclips. The reason the lyrics ring home is because Teddy was going through a divorce when he wrote the song. Little Anthony said it was his job to interpret the emotions of Randazzo. It explains the bitterness and hurt of some of the lyrics in my opinion.
