    A great example of the power of her voice and also the power of projection so important to opera singers! Ellah and Dinah, even with the microphone, couldn't match the power. They all had a blast! What a wonderful TV moment!

    • @barakodad4fun683
      @barakodad4fun683 2 года назад +6

      Oh God, all that means is that she was the loudest. Why do people have to compare performers, from different genres at that? The whole idea of collaboration is to bring together vocalists with different styles, not to find out who outsang whom.

    • @TheSadaAbeExperience
      @TheSadaAbeExperience 2 года назад +8

      @@barakodad4fun683, I agree. It was a comedy schtick. Ella and Dinah cut their teeth before microphones were invented, so projection was no lost art with them. Plus, amplification or no amplification, you need serious chops to stay on top of the brass section of a big band, so they easily held their own here, in spite of the visual gag with the microphone.

    • @KajiVocals
      @KajiVocals 2 года назад +10

      @@TheSadaAbeExperience More over, Joan sings in a much higher range in this - which itself will carry greater volume naturally. Both Dinah and Ella had quite extended high (and natural sopranos as well) ranges with decent projection when they wanted. This right here was done as a comedy sketch pretty obviously.

      Ella a natural voice certainly. But Sutherland spent decades learning her craft so throwing up her talent to simple natural gift is sort of insulting. She worked EXTREMELY hard and her effort paid off.

    Each of these ladies was at the absolute top of her genre, no ego or insecurities to get in the way, the only competition perhaps a little bit of friendly "can I hold this note longer than you?" So much fun for us, and you can tell they were enjoying themselves immensely. And at the end, even sitting down, Joan's top range blows their volume completely out of the water. To be fair, she was the only one of the three used to singing without a microphone!
