Supersized Antique & Vintage Shopping on the Road to the Show!

  • A nomad needs a caravan, so we're following our friend and antique advertising maven Dave DeLongchamp on the road to the massive Springfield, Ohio show! He knows this route, and we are up early to get to a humongous antique mall in Findlay, Ohio that I've never seen.
    The sign says this antique mall is the world's largest, and who am I to disagree? Ohio is known for giant antique malls that still have quality antiques and vintage, and this is a great time to explore something new and see what we can buy here to resell at our event.
    Success comes quickly and easily in that quest! Oldsmobile dealer cards, a hot orange cased Italian glass ewer, a vintage Elk's Lodge sign and a pretty silver-flecked Murano cranberry bowl all get sent to the counter. Dave spots an oyster tin that only an expert would readily i.d. as scarce, showing the value of specialized knowledge.
    I, on the other hand, am going nuts in here! As a generalist, I want to see it all, and there's way more than we'll ever get time to cover. But we still get to see some amazing things here...a Rookwood art deco cigarette holder, a fantastic wired glass chandelier, and a certain woven article that has us both stumped until we ask them to take it out of the case all catch our eye.
    I spot a pair of red 1950s low stools, and Dave finds an unusual early automotive tin before we head out to the next stop on the caravan. Will we sell all this right away at Springfield? Watch the ticker to find out what sells!

    George, you hit the nail on the head when you mentioned not having a lot as a child or having items taken away from us as children. as part of healing my inner child I relish these nostalgic items which represent my lost childhood innocence. thank you saying that.

      I grew up in the 60s when old things weren't being prized. Everybody wanted new and plastic.I think that is why I love old things. Also watching shows like Dark Shadows. I think I spent more time watching the set design than I did the actors. I loved the things they had in the house - and the costumes.

    So wish I could download your brain, George, even just for an hour or two! 😂 In all seriousness, appreciate all you do to educate us vintage AND the modern peeps.
    I had a yard sale this weekend and was tickled when some older teens/possibly early 20's boys/young men TOTALLY geeked out on a vintage GE radio I had for sale. They were STOKED!
    Quite a highlight of the weekend. ❤

    That basketball and net lamp was what pop art was all about. That yellow lamp was so unique that I think I would have picked it up. 9:17 I was just researching that Hazel Atlas cocktail shaker with fish (Just bought one this weekend at a garage sale.) while watching/listening to this video and lo and behold there it is in this video!! I always see channels skipping the books, and that's one place I would be buried. I'm always on the lookout for design and architecture books. I had that acrylic base globe just until recently.

    Good evening, George! I really liked that sewing basket. That Hubbly refrigerator bank would've been too tempting for me. I liked that, and it wouldn't take a lot of space. There was a one pound note there, from Jamaica. I want a British one pound note. A friend gave me a fiver, but the one pound notes seem more difficult to find. I want one with Queen Elizabeth II on it. Loved that case that had the charms in it. I'd like to have an old lightning rod like that. $55.00 seemed a good price. The would be a fantastic mall in which to spend the day. Thanks for the take-along!

    • @TheAntiqueNomad
      @TheAntiqueNomad  11 месяцев назад +2

      Wasn't the basket cool? I would've liked to have seen the original contents. I've been collecting QEII low denomination bills from Canada of late, I didn't notice the Jamaican one but I had to limit myself so Oh Canada it is. Love finding lightning rods in the midwest where they still don't think anything of them!

    I can relate to some of the stuff that “got taken away”. My step mom was good at that. Getting rid of stuff:
    Several albums of 78 records from my grandmas house.
    A hat rack from the 1800’s that hat buffalo horns to hang your hat on
    Most of my cool toys. They magically disappeared when we moved. No consultation or choice in the matter.

    Funny what you said about penguins. I went to a yard sale years ago and on the table were quite a few penguins in glass and pottery. After picking out the best the old woman that was selling them asked if I wanted to see her real one. She had a taxidermied emperor penguin her father had brought fr the artic. She asked if I thought 75 dollars was too much to ask..... I bought it. It was I central NJ.

We had more fun selling them. Found a few I never sold and tried at the end of 2022. Bottom had fallen out of the market; I stil; have them.

    I watch your videos religiously. Thanks for all the great information! I am a tiny reseller on Ebay and was wondering if you've ever heard of an scam where the artist comes to the listing of their own work looking for a deal or something. I have a nice art glass paperweight listed and the artist messaged me saying his grandkids would really love the piece he made 40 years ago. I just replied that it was a beautiful piece, thinking he's fishing. (the artist is still alive) Just wondered if anyone else had a similar experience or if my artist may be real.

    Was that a whole table of salt cellars? I love them. You should have bought the purple and yellow Oddfellows. All you need is a wizard's hat and you are all set. Those banjo clocks should be worth more. Sad that they have never really had any value. Great for decorators - their oblong size makes them great to tuck into small spots. I have one with reverse painted ships. I have it on a piece of wall between two doors that is very narrow. Looks perfect. And I would love to eventually find a lightning rod - have never seen one.

    • @TheAntiqueNomad
      @TheAntiqueNomad  10 месяцев назад +1

      I agree about the banjo clocks, they all seem to still run too! I wanted the Oddfellows togs but what would I do with them? (Sell, I guess.) I only see lightning rods in the Midwest and they all sell in the northwest!

      I have 3 kimono. I have my mother's dress form in my bedroom and occasionally I switch out what kimono I display. I even had her prom dress from 1950 on it for a while. Luckily it is an adjustable one. I would display an Oddfellows robe. I don't find many people other than collectors buying clocks though. And banjo clocks don't interest them unless they are good names like Willard or Jerome. They really aren't interested in the Ct. Manufacturers like Seth Thomas and stuff. Too common. So they are kind of hard to sell. I just found my husband's two large scale escapement models - one off's made in Switzerland for Bulova. They are gorgeous and truly rare. Already sold them. They get picked up next weekend. I need some pics first. @@TheAntiqueNomad
