This is in fact one of those episodes of a show that is genuinely all time iconic. I mean Bebop is a very iconic show but it has a couple episodes that are just... damn.
Yeah this ep drops your jaw to the floor. What’s crazy about bebop is that it has a few of those eps in a 26 ep run…….this is my favorite one though. Blows my kind every time
The soundtrack for this show is on another level, and this episode really shows it off. Makes the amazing visuals that much more memorable. What's crazy is that this single season series has a soundtrack that's made up of like 3 or 4 different albums. (I think.. then there's another from the movie, and one from the live action show) I listen to them fairly often and it blows me away how many tracks are full length, fully fleshed out songs, even though sometimes we only hear a small clip of them in the series. Definitely recommend giving the full albums a listen!!
While the music and action is incredibly good in this episode pay close attention to what is said, especially by Annie and Vicious, and every single image of the "flashback". There's far more to this series than a syndicate love triangle.
That’s what I love about this show. EVERY TIME I watch it I notice new things . There so much to it under the service that I still find new shit after 20 years of rewatch
The singing in Greenbird (the song playing while Spike falls from the church) is done by Yoko Kanno, the composure of the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack. No formal training at all she's a musical genius.
Yeah, people sling around "musical genius" a lot, but it's 100% true with Kanno. She's written compositions for so many genres that it beggars belief. Shes not a fluent speaker of English (or any other language besides Japanese) but she makes those languages work so well with her scarily precise ear. I highly recommend her "Terror in Resonance" score if you want to see her go off the rails.
@@brianyaniro4797terror in resonance is an anime that yoko did the entire score for. Same with ghost in the shell stand alone complex and wolfs rain, both of which are bangers!!!
One of the best episodes of television I've ever watched. The whole prelude to the cathedral fight while "Rain" plays reminds me of something Michael Mann would have done on Miami Vice, with how the music and images work together. And you won't really understand Spike's flashback for a good while, but the payoff is worth it.
Great ear. That's an amazing track. I don't think I've ever seen anyone bring it up, but it's timeless, simple, and gorgeous. Give her soundtrack for "Terror in Resonance" a try. It has a similar sad but beautiful vibe, I hope you enjoy it!
The Cowboy Bebop manga originally ran in a magazine targeted and young women (shojo). While it’s debated on what demographic the anime targets (seinen?), I like think of Bebop as a weekly Soap Opera. It’s no wonder it doesn’t feel like a shonen anime
At this point in the show I was more into the side excursions rather than the actual "plot" but that does change by the end, to where it's pretty much equal. This episode shines on the rewatch for me personally, when I know how it all plays out.
One of my favorite all time favorite anime episodes. I watched Cowboy Bebop for the first time this year, and it's a TOP3 favorite anime of mine for sure. I loved the first episode, but this episode was something else. The scene with Spike falling off from the crurch is ICONIC.

If they’re coming in with a title like _Ballad of Fallen Angels,_ the episode has to be beautiful, badass, and iconic, right? Yes, of course, you agree with me on that. It’s simply the way it is.
Once I hear "I don't feel a thing And I stop remembering The days are just like moments turned to hours Mother used to say If you want, you'll find a way But mother never danced through fire shower" I can't help but feel some type of way
I also have loved the fact that the show doesnt just exposit at you but treats the audience smartly trying to leave breadcrumbs of lore and character and plot details to see if viewers will pick them up and properly piece them together in a very subtle fashion. Just genius
THi episode is incredible. Viscious is a fantastic villain, the fact we are given only HINTS of SPike's past but not given full details, THE CHURCH SCENE, THE FALLING SCENE. This episode is THE most famous, iconic in the series, to the pint some shots from it were used in trailers for like toonami/adult swim and stuff.
If I were to make a list of my top twenty favourite uses of music in fiction, this episode, by itself, would have three of those slots if I didn't limit it to one pick per work.
Hearing the green hair girl loving the show makes me think shes gots some nuance to her. I gave her props lol. Definitely a top 5 episode of the series.
This was the first episode I ever saw, when VHS was still a thing. It hooked me completely. Fun Time! I'm enjoying watching you folks discover this absolute landmark of a show.
The saying that Imitation is the greatest form of flattery is extremely on point when describing bebop and all of the series that have tried to capture the spark it had. There are more epic shows, there are better soundtracks, there are better characters, but the reason that bebop is still so well received 25 years on is because it melds together all of these amazing qualities into one package and so many newer shows have pulled themes and styles from this show that at best become just a good passing homage and at worst turn out to be an empty attempt.
Okay, I don't know if this has been in any of the comments for the other videos, but Cowboy Bebop The Movie released after this series ended, but time-wise comes before the final two episodes, 25 & 26, which is a two-parter. So you can either watch it after you watch this series completely, knowing it takes place before the finale, or anytime before episode 25. I look forward to your reaction either way.
Spike and Vicious are absolutely 100% mirrors. TBH if you pay attention to their character designs there's a lot more going on. Spike has black hair that sticks up, Vicious has silvery-grey hair that falls down. Vicious pops his collar, Spike doesn't. Spike's nose points down, Vicious' points up. Spike uses guns, Vicious uses a sword. They're just made to be opposites in every meaningful way. Their conflict really is so central to this story and it's great.
I love watching people react to this ep. It’s so fucking good. Also spike was not a mentor to vicious , they were partners but spike was just a bit more talented and well liked in the syndicate . He was the “heir apparent “ but decided to leave and that hurt vicious. The woman is also involved in that relationship. It’s a triangle of sorts ;)
"Ballad of Fallen Angels" is the episode that grabs everyone that 1-4 couldn't. It's gorgeous, mysterious, and dark. Peak Bebop. Morgan, that was very perceptive with the mirroring of Vicious and Spike. There is one difference between the two and it's that Spike can live without death and bloodshed. That's why Vicious gets so angry when he has him at swordpoint. That's the only time you will see Vicious angry in the show, and it's the key to the themes between the two men.
Vicious hates weakness. When Mao Yenrai signed the peace pact with the other gang boss, He took them both out. When Spike declared he'd bled away all his assassin's blood, Vicious became super angry. Because deep down he believed Spike would again become what he once was. Vicious felt betrayed now that Spike had displayed the same weakness as Mao.
Spike and Jet are close, almost like family, but they met eachother after really rough points in their lives. There was sort of an unspoken, "you dont wanna know, I wont ask if you wont" agreement between them. That breaks down over the course of the show of course.
@@meursaulty6672I mean One Piece is just as beloved yet even the fans liked the One Piece Live Action adaptation because it is good. Vicious was not even the least bit intriguing in the live action
The problem with Vicious was that they actually tried to use and characterize him. In the anime, he shows up for, what, 5 of 26 episodes? And when he does, he only shows up to be super edgelord boy, spout some edgy anime mumbo jumbo, and antagonize Spike, then get the fuck out. In the live action, they made him and Julia the entire B story. He's on screen half the time, and they try to make him a real person. But that's the issue. He isn't a real person with real feelings. He's a tool. A weapon. He's a sword leveled against Spike that the show wields only as much as necessary. I don't need to see him dealing with political intrigue and his girlfriend problems. I need him to fuck with Spike and then disappear. And worst of all, when they did try to make him an actual character, the character they chose to make him was fucking Viserys Targaryen.
