In this video I show you how to build a DIY Acoustic Diffuser QRD 13 Kit. Our DIY sound diffuser QRD 13 kit is based on prime number 13 so we have 12 wells, dividers, rears, side pieces, back pieces, the horizontal dividers. The whole thing is designed so that all you have to do is get some glue, the right kind of course, and assemble the unit. No screwing required, everything is pre-cut for you. The back and the top and the bottom will support the well dividers and the horizontal dividers. So go ahead and get started by looking at how to put the DIY Sound Diffuser kit together.
Any questions, please let me know.
Thanks
Dennis

Im a carpentry and joinery craftsmen by trade. Great looking timbers. Excellent machine work with damn fine tolerances. A purpose made component that holds together with tape........ nice
Thanks Adi, much appreciated! Can you email me at dennis@acousticfields.com?

If you build a small jig to locate the side panels by using a length ( length of wells cabinet ) and thin width ( 2") with short wood blocks that insert inside the panel wells say 1" then the panels will be held vertically straight so the side panels can easily be pushed in
Hi Graham, Good suggestion. I will pass it along to the guys.
Your plans are amazing. I bought them last week and was blown away by how nicely they're done. Thanks again!
S, Thank you. Let us know if you have any issues with the build or application.
standard birch 1/4" plywood is less than a quarter inch, actual 0.195"... do you have to plane wood sheets down to 1/4" to make the vertical dividers? or just use the 0.195" standard plywood?
Well dividers should be as thin as possible. 1/8" is best but produces warp over time.
At the risk of being slapped, what would happen to the performance if you filled the cavities with foam?
You would destroy the diffusers ability to perform. Sound energy enters the diffuser and then is distributed into the wells of the diffuser. It bounces around within each well and then is sent back into the room based on the frequen cy response of the diffuser. Each well is a particular depth diffusing a particular octave band. You must keep the wells free from any material type. People want to put fabric across the face of each diffuser and that can not work either.
So, why do you let the sheets of wood in between the wells stick out? why not make them the same depth as the longest well itself? Why compromise?
What are your thoughts on paint? Would painting it alter the sound negatively?
J, It depends on the surface area's impact on sound quality. If the surface area you are considering painting has a large impact then yes anything you do has an influence.
So if you build a diffuser you it doesnt have to be airtight . So sound will bounce off it but also pass thru it ?
Should there be absortion behind the diffuser then ?
Just curious thanks for all the video’s
Z, Not necessary. Its the well width and depth that contribute to performance.
Can you please tell the LxBxH of diffuser & what was the wells depth ? F
Every prime number has different series of depths. You can see the depths for each prime number in our build plans. www.acousticfields.com/product/all-in-one-diy-acoustic-treatment-build-plans-package/
i just checked your site..... this kit doesnt appear to be available anymore?
what is thickness of the fins/ well dividers? looks like 3/16 or 1/4 inch? Are they made from solid wood or plywood?
The thinner the well divider the better for performance. If you can get small wood dividers at 1/8" that would be ideal. You can use 3/16" or 1/4" ply or solid if no small wood available.
Would be nice if these kits were still available
We discontinued this product line for lack of interest. We can custom build them for you. They are avaible in groups of 4 only. Send us your prime number request to info@acousticfields.com
Looks very nice! Q: No damping material inside?

Quick question... Will adding finish hurt any of the frequencies? And does height matter? (Ex. Making it taller?) Thanks! (And great video)
D, You must choose the height to match the usage of the room. We do not stain or paint our diffusers since we use a "A" grade wood. We use a clear sealer to protect against moisture and dirt. Any finish material will impact sound quality. Do not paint or use MDF in the build. MDF and paint are too absorptive.
Hello, on the same subject, is there a rule of thumb on the height vs room size? Is that explained in the diy book? Thanks in advance!
Love your channel!
Looks like you discontinued this product and now charge a lot for a finished one?
JDM, Kits are still available. We do not advertise them since we sell only a few a year.
@@AcousticFields I'd love to get the cost details on your kits!

Looked on your site... not seeing any kits, as the video implies... only plans and fully assembled units. Are the kits no longer available?
A, The difference in price between the kits and fully assembled units was small. People prefer to have the units shipped to them fully assembled.
How does speech only diffusion differ from broad spectrum diffusion in
terms of materials and well variation? Do the foam pyramid diffusers
meet the necessary requirements?
+snetsjs Foam is a sound absorbing technology. It has nothing to do with diffusion. This is the way acoustic product manufacturers label products as some thing they are not nor can never be. It is like asking the tortoise to run like the rabbit. He is not designed to do that function. I have heard foam called a "bass trap", now a diffuser, tomorrow maybe a reflector? Diffusion in a small room must meet 5 technical criteria involving decay rates along with RT-60 times. Only quadratic diffusion meets these 5 technical requirements. Stay away from any thing else labeled diffuser.
what are the depth of the wells in inch ?
S, Every prime number has its own unique frequency response with different well depths. The well width is held constant at 2". Our diffuser build plans will give you the measurements you need. What is your usage in the room? What are room dimensions? www.acousticfields.com/product/all-in-one-diy-acoustic-treatment-build-plans-package/
Why are all your diffuser models have prime number -1 Wells, does 0 height well not matter?
A "0" height or well depth is a flat surface which is a reflection or sound redirection surface. It is not necessary in the frequency response of the diffuser.
@@AcousticFields thank you
Really nice diffusers! What kind of glue is used?
A, We use a a compound similar to the "super glues" marketed under that name.
I'm thinking CA glue but with a 2 hour dry time and 24 hour cure you must be using something else.Any time soon you will talk real world diffusion in a live rock band situation? I see you want it behind I was always told far opposing wall....my room is the letter C.Two long walls across from bass and guitar amps while the drums sit in a 15 wide channel 10' forward and 10' back from the kit.Was thinking bout a dual qrd7 ramp diffuser horizontal at head high out front of kit to 6" depth. Then making qrd 13 behind low on floor on wheels but is there a diffuser 3 " wide channels... 12" depth two 6" at zero depth then 3 with 12" depth in repeating order for behind the drums? A shroeder design??
A, Fill out the information in this link : www.acousticfields.com/free-room-analysis/
For others reading this in the future.
Do not use CA glue. Use PVA (white glue). Any glue with an extended working time, good surface wetting, and low clamping pressure is good. Bad glues are ones with short working time, high clamping pressure, and poor wetting. So that makes CA, yellow, and polyurethane very bad choices.
If you must use CA, use a thick slow version, go one part at a time, and hit it with a shot of accelerator. Would be stupidly expensive and not very strong though.
how much and where do you buy it
Hi Bob, Send me an email to info@acousticfields.com.
are the depths arbitrary or measured in some way? thanks!
+Joakim YesMan digitalaudiorock.com/cgi-bin/qrd.cgiput in the specifications that you want as far as maximum well depth and
what prime # diffuser. It's very scientific and tells you range of
diffusion
+Joakim YesMan They are based upon calculations that uses prime numbers as a basis for the modulus formula.
Are the kits going to be available again?
What prime number do you need?
is there a reason that its 12.5 inches deep. can i half this amount. new to this any advice would be great
+Wiremu digitalaudiorock.com/cgi-bin/qrd.cgi put in the specifications that you want as far as maximum well depth and what prime # diffuser. It's very scientific and tells you range of diffusion
+Wiremu No, you must keep the sequences in tact. Go to a lower prime if you are having depth issues.
Would there be any improvement on performance if I filled the well with dense sound absorption material?
M, Do you need absorption on the same wall surface area as the diffuser? What rate and level of absorption do you need and why?
you will get an absorber
and loose a diffuser
where do you place these? they're quite big
W, It depends on your room usage. Two channel listening front and the rear wall, home theater rear wall, and ceiling, mix rooms rear wall.
I don't understand. Every single QRD I've ever seen, either in pictures, illustrations, or as a part of the QRDude design software, has a number of wells corresponding to a prime number. So they'll have 3 or 7, or 11, or 13, etc. Yet yours has 12? I'm sure it probably works, but why not do actually 13 wells?
And shouldn't one of the wells be a "zero," where it doesn't have any fins around it? All your wells have fins protruding. Or are you meant to put them together and glue a "zero" well on the front joint in between two units?
Just curious.
Thanks.
Hi Keith, As a general guideline there is one less well than the prime number of the chosen sequence. The zero means the surface is reflective. We achieve that by the two cabinet edges adjoining each other since multiple units are required.
what wood was used ?
Hi Jose, Soft woods work best for diffusers. Do not use MDF. Pine, basswood, and cheery are some options.
Why do you say do not use mdf?
Thank you very much very kind.
Ok. So your diffusers are also absorbing. You know that this places your diffusor in the same group than EPS diffusers ? @@trevordolhan1060
@@trevordolhan1060 LOL! When talking about real diffusers you want as LESS as possible absorption.
where do you locate this one
M , Diffusion application is all about room usage and distance from listening position to the diffuser.
