It all depends on your greenhouse size but we have a small greenhouse and small heater and it does a awesome job :)

I've been heating my greenhouses here in Indiana with kerosene heaters for 25 years. Even a 24,000 btu will barely keep a 20 by 48 above freezing if the temps drop down in the mid twenties. If I have tomatoes in a 24 /100, even two will barely keep it above freezing when the temps drop to twenty five. The heater will use about $ 5.00 worth in 12 hrs. I watch for used heaters on craigslist and can pick them up for around $50.00. I have six heaters and two wood stoves. Wood heat puts out the most heat and is the cheapest to use but I have to get up and feed them at least once in the middle of the night. I can fill a kerosene heater and sleep through the night.
    I have a 24/124, 24/100, 12/124, two 16/108 and two 20/48 ...

We use a propane turkey fryer and a massive 15 gallon aluminum cook pot.
The lid should be vented to keep escaping moisture going up and away from the pot’s exterior (dripping water down and into the flame causing smoking).
Too much humidity? Yes, definitely, but it does work.
Cover the house with 20mil tarp for teen temps.
And an interior tarp for tropicals

Hey Steven. Great video as always. Would you mind sharing where you see yourself in 5 years, if you don't mind? Like what goals do you have set?

Wouldn't you just be better off with a layer of fleece or two, that's all I use and we have plenty of lights frosts too and plenty of frost tender veg growing : All the best - Steve

As long as you don't have to do it often it's fine, tried it in Oregon, wasn't happy when I saw my power bill that month.

If you insulate your greenhouse with bubble wrap and make sure any gaps where a cold draft might pass through are sealed, you should be able to keep the power consumption at a very reasonable level.

You could do like your friend Curtis Stone and run a second hoop house outside of that on plus make it as much longer as you do wider and circulate the air through it, I don't know if it gets cold enough where you live to need the extra protection or if it will make the difference if you do need it . I hope you have had a great season this year.

I use a similar heater and heating wire in my non-insulated lean-to solarium. I am able to stay well over 20°c (70°f) when it is -30°c outside. I would suggest to anyone trying an electric heater to also use an uninterruptible power supply in case of power failures.

The problem with these things is they use so much energy to do so little (in terms of using it in a greenhouse). It seems to go against the whole green side of gardening, but I understand why you'd want to use it.

Are you saying burning wood or petro based fuels would be more "green"? I am able to power my solarium off 1 rv solar panel and backup batteries in Canada during the winter.

    • @baddriversofcolga
      @baddriversofcolga 5 лет назад

Absolutely not. If you power one of these with solar then that's the way to do it. I'm just saying if you're hooking one of these up to the electrical grid it's rather wasteful unless you're on 100% clean energy though it's still going to raise your bill noticeably if you use it much.

I must apologize for a suggestion I made from my studies. An expensive agricultural consultant said that transplants produce worse results than directly planting into the field. I love what worm castings can do. They can produce 1 pound of amino acid chelated Nitrogen which is nutritionally equal to 4 pounds of liquid Nitrogen.
But I have since learned that worm castings are too fine for seeds in their first few days. Castings at transplant time would be good. How about worm tea to increase the nutrient density of the young seedlings prior to transplanting into the field?
Stress is high for transplants. Stress cuts a plant's productivity.

It's a 1500 watts. That is all it can do. A twenty dollar ceramic heater. The bigger the heater box doesn't make more heat it's all about watts

And and not good on an extension cord I have had severe fires where the appliance cord socket melted and caught the melting plastic on fire I'm running a 1500 watt oil radiator @900 watts and no problem with overheating of the plug using a 12 gauge 100 foot extension cord.

  • @BushImports

Does it make a difference what kind of worms the castings came from? I had a bunch of grub worms overwintered in a mountain of grass clippings from mowing last summer and they turned the mountain of grass into a short hump on the ground.
