    The communication from the MasAir pilots on this one and the one last week was pretty good. Clearly and calmly communicating. ATC on the other hand seemed a little flustered.

      I notice both pilots including the one from the engine failure followed the same emergency reporting response to ATC where they declared and emergency and gave them souls and fuel. So that means pilots follow the SOP. Of course last time and this time ATC wasn’t listening anyways.

      @@sncy5303 they probably didn’t know what they had at first. We don’t know because we weren’t there but it may have been relatively minor, but enough that once they cross referenced the issue, they did not want to take any chances. They did a stellar job at detecting a possible issue, quickly choosing a go around, and communicating exactly what they wanted to ATC. The only thing that may have made it a little bit easier for ATC is stating, “We are declaring an emergency. Mayday Maday Maday. Prepare to copy souls on board and remaining fuel.”
      That may have given ATC a second to process the Mayday call and know that the pilots were going right into souls on board and fuel because they were already ahead of the curve.

      I don't think it was too out of the ordinary. Just from watching this channel, a lot of emergency fuel calls are quite calm like this. Some emergencies are real emergencies. Others just meet the criteria and could become very real emergencies if they don't have attention from ATC.

      Was 'funny' because they were like:
      Pilot: Going around because we have an issue with flight controls.
      Tower: So you have an emergency?
      Pilot: No, we're fine
      *Minute later*
      Pilot: MAYDAY!
      Tower: Ok what do you want to do?
      Pilot: Freely fly around with our flight controls.

      @@818R6 It does seem like, from watching these videos, eventually for an emergency at a major airport the primary ATC gets a secondary ATC to ask those relevant questions (fuel/souls) and arrange for ground support while the primary does the vectors for all aircraft in the area to make space. Not having any aviation experience at all, this seems like a good system provided the ground crew has time to do their basic tasks in an emergency.

    Again a VERY competent mayday declaration.... and shitty handling by ATC. Offer them the visual: "The airport is at your 9 oclock, I can clear you for the visual anytime you like". Great! You give them an option, great! Then when they answer with a very specific: "no thanks, we'd like.... " Accept that and help them do it the way they like.
    In this case, the pilots had a "stable flying plane" and plenty of time to figure out what to do. No rush, no high workload in the cockpit, so they were able to make their request again. But what if it was a real "urgent" emergency with things happening fast? As it stands, the extra radio communication might distract them enough, combined with the "flight control issue" that they crash the plane.

      When they are on final, they need to keep the aircraft on a stabilized approach so they can come in smoothly and touch down where they are supposed to on the runway. If something happens on final that causes the aircraft to destabilize, they need more time to figure out what is happening and be able to reestablish their approach. If they only take the minute or two they have before touchdown to figure it out, that is not enough time. Unless it is something absolutely catastrophic, such as a dual engine failure, the safer decision is to go around. They establish into a holding so they can assess what went wrong, run checklists to try and fix or improve the issue, and create a plan of action from there. Sure, they would not want to spend more time than necessary in the air, but they have procedures that they need to go through in order to make sure they can land as safely as possible. Once they have everything under control, then they can go back and try the approach over again

      I think it is very reasonable to call a mayday with a flight control issue. They don't specify on frequency what the issue is, but you can imagine something like a yaw damper inop or runaway trim stabilizer can be life threatening enough to call mayday.

    • @records26
      @records26 3 года назад +1

      Pan-pan is "We have an urgent issue and would like to get on the ground ASAP, but we are under control of the aircraft".
      Mayday is "We are out of control/cannot maintain altitude or heading, or we cannot guarantee we will remain in control".
      This emergency falls into that last part. With a flight control issue they obviously thought was serious, they did not want to chance losing control in a busy airspace with other aircraft nearby. The Mayday is telling the controllers "Clear the area, please."

    ATC sounded quite alarmed after hearing of flight control issues, what was the reason for this? I would love to hear the Atcs description of this instance ( I know this will never happen), it would be great to get some extra context. You can tell from the pilots relatively calm voices that they are not exactly experiencing extreme G-Forces and flight control issues were minor considering they were asking to head over to CATLY.

      Lead paint in the tower. It has a sweet taste, and apparently they won't stop eating it.

    A "flight control issue" is too generic. If there is any trouble steering the aircraft then ATC needs to think about not having other airplanes full of people and fuel, such as presumably Alaska 220, near the runway. God forbid this emergency affected low speed directional control and the 767 left the side of the runway into one or more aircraft. Sorry to sound like a pessimist.

      All atc NEEDS to know is that there is a problem, telling them what the problem specifically would not only be time cosuming on both sides, but slso distrscing for everyone involved. As there are Vastly more important things to do/communicate

    • @BlueSparrow13
      @BlueSparrow13 3 года назад +2

      Now to the second part of the comment,
      By the time they are 3-5 miles out they are already pretty close to landing speed. At which time they would already know about any low speed control issues, and would likely communicate it to atc, making sure any safty hazzards are out of the way. probably doing a go around first, a rule #1 about landing is; make sure your stabilized!
      I hope this helped to shed at least a little light on the subject :)

    WTH is going on with MAS Air and their fleet? Sounds like either maintenance issues or an incredible run of bad luck! OK...I always slam Asian pilots for poor English skills, especially under stress, but both Pilot and Copilot deserve credit here for their clarity and communication. In fact, it was ATC who was having the communication difficulties! This is the second or third time I have heard Mas Air pilots give fuel remaining, SOB and dangerous goods status with the mayday declaration. The training staff are, at least, doing that right. ATCs sounds like an annoyance to most emergency flight crews when they have to ask for those stats multiple times during a mayday scenario.

      Based on two crew who landed planes having issues without a single sweat raised? Hardly say its all a maintenance issue. Considering one was an engine failure/vibration.

    The term "flight control malfunction" is fine when first going around, but it really would be helpful to be easier for everyone to narrow it down prior to landing.
    I suspect that the phrase is in the checklist and the crew's English is limited to the required vocabulary.
    Good job by all. Crew took charge and seemed to stay on top of things, specify what they wanted and declared the emergency. Better than some domestic US pilots.
    And of course ATC needs to ask emergency aircraft the same questions again. It's the American way!
