- In this video, we fix the mistake we made with the cement footers. We also install some metal roofing that we found for a really good deal! Should we paint the metal to match or leave the "green roof" alone and have it mismatched?

Katie take that moss off the red roof. The red metal under it will be far more efficient in shedding off rain water
I agree - as well use that footage to capture that water since it's always an issue up there - get it into a catchment system for the livestock and plants. It also captures moisture, which metal and water do not mix well, so it drys out slower and will corrode the metal. Clean it off - and then apply a white sealant to it (like a mobile home/RV roof sealant - which serves to prolong it's life and to match the other side.
Why not use Timberlok screws instead of those giant nails.
Yes to both of the replies before but add also that clean metal roof has about 100% better chance of shedding snow before it is so deep it causes a crisis! Like dumping tons of snow on top of the relocated mill!
The moss needs to come off cause it’s causing the metal to rust away rapidly. Doing good work guy and girl 👏👏👏
Clearing off the moss would help shed the water, plus if you capture the water then you’ve got an additional source for watering plants and water for the animals.
I agree with keeping the old roof as is but would clear the debris off of it. It will last longer and also shed rain better overall. You guys did a great job on the roof and it looks very nice. Those goats are so cute, I really like them - they are real characters. You two have a great week and be safe. Larry, Central Valley, Ca.
Get rid of the moss. It retains moisture and eventually cause the metal to rust. Clean off and spray a “Direct to Metal” paint, to extend the life of the roof.
It's strange I'll most likely never meet you , but because I watch every video you seem like friends.................
Moss behaves like a relentless invader, creating a physical barrier that traps moisture against your roof. As it grows and spreads, it can lift shingles, creating pockets that hold even more moisture. Over time, this can lead to structural damage, holes, and even leakage and extra weight on roof.
Love the dormer. Katie looks so professional with the tape measure clipped on her pocket!
Greg even with that large twist type nail you can always predrill just through the first board as all the holing part is in the second piece of lumber, but I think people think predrilling ( even with screws ) loses strength but if you just drill a smaller hole it keeps all the wood fibers from breaking and being split losing strength
Any growth you leave on the metal will speed up rot. Metal can deterate also.
I would definitely clean off the roof. All that debris traps moisture and promotes rust.
As for the color: paint the old roof if needed to preserve it. At that time you can paint the whole roof if desired.
Hi....i would leave it as it is. Mayby brush the debry off to better the water run off😊😊
Katie, you got your wish, a red and white roof...🇨🇦😅 I'd at the very least pressure wash the red roof, the moss and debris up there will create a million little holes to promote rust and leaks..😂😅 Otherwise, the poly looks great! Love ya'll ❤️
Really enjoying this build. I would clean and remove the moss and debris off the red roof, as it will extend the life.
I saw another RUclipsr use a reciprocating saw without the blade to vibrate the cement in the footers. I know you are done now, but it might be helpful next time. Great job, it looks great.
Good job guys, it’s a barn/shed. Don’t beat yourself up about an overlap.
Hello Katie and Great, I really enjoy watching your videos, but today I would like to give a hint. You should definitely install gutters so that the water that runs down from the roof and splashes back doesn't dirty the walls and then run through the building. The gutters would also make sense on the other buildings, even if that is not common in America. You can also use the rainwater in the garden and as drinking water for the animals. Many greetings from Germany
Being a native 'American', I enjoyed your joking about the colors!!!!
Go Canada 🇨🇦
A lot of square footage you've gained in the old sawmill shed. It's going to be a nice shop area. Thanks for the video.
@ 11:20 the aesthetics view of the dormer from the inside and at this video view is very aesthetically pleasing !!!
Great deal on the metal! I agree with/ color’s for the roof Katie.. especially since you can’t see it from the ground. Greg is our expert roofer I trust he will figure it out!🙏🙏🙏Blessing’s
That barn looks fabulous
If you’re gonna keep the leaves and pine straw off you should paint it. If you can’t see it and it won’t harm the roof I’d leave it white. On my barn it’s fine. It looks great from South Carolina 👍
Don't know how many hits it will take but that's one big nail also Greg will get the roof figured out he always does ❤❤❤you guys be safe God Bless
Agree with comments best to clear off the roof to allow rain to flow off, later you could harvest the Rain Water to use for your Goats and Chickens, plus watering your plants. Here in the UK we have Guttering which captures the rain water that flows off our garage roof, this goes down pipes into a Water Tub to store for our garden in the hot weather. Loving the new addition which is well built. Love you two your such a wonderful couple who work so well together. xxxxxxx ❤️💙
Nice addition to the original structure. Fun to watch you build this.
I think it is nice to have the new roof on the new section and keeping the roof as is on the old section. I think moss retains moisture so may need to come off. Great work on sorting out the cement posts, that looked really strong and your grass is coming on nicely x
Clean off the roof and repaint so everything looks nice and new. The new addition will add so much space . Great job.
I would second cleaning off the back side roof of the barn. That will let you better access the condition of the metal roof underneath. A good white sealant paint like used for mobile homes will really prolong that old side of the barn a lot longer. Good job on the front roof and with proper care and maintenance, it should last the rest of your lives. I would have drilled an 1/8" pilot hole for those long nails Greg was pounding in. Just out of curiosity, how many did he bend over before they got the whole way in-lol??
Ustedes dos me caen muy bien. Me gusta como trabajan codo a codo apoyándose el uno al otro los felicito muchachos 👏👏👏👏🍀🍀🍀
It looks incredible, beautiful work peeps :) & bonding agent to boot -- you must be so proud of all you've accomplished so far, fist bumps galore
NEED A AIR PALM NAILER FOR NAILS OR AIR HAMMER?..... GOOD JOB U2!
As an American I still found your red and blue comment funny. Nice save Greg😂
We love our neighbors to the south
A roof that doesn't leak is a good roof. The red is not going to be that dominant even after you clean the trash off. Sheds water better without the debris, lengthens the life of the roof.
I like the smart little trick with the roofing on the gabled part
Yay roof finished! I really like the clear panels for the dormer 🎉🎉🎉
Always a good day when a This Of Grid Life video is dropped, great work you 2. Making me feel guilty for not having started my own chores yet
At the least get the leaf blower up there. It will take 10 minutes to blow some of the stuff off the roof. It may be covered up again with leaves soon but just make your project look better for some time. Good job.
Take all the debris off red metal roof!! Metal will allow water to run better👍 I wouldn’t worry too much about your roof after that👍👍
Go Lahaina blue!
I advise you not to store anything under where the new roof meets the old, because it is very likely that melting snow will drip down there unless a proper fascia/flashing is installed at the roof intersection. I do enjoy the videos.
I have been watching your videos since you started. You guys have stuck with it and built a good life. Love your videos. I'm proud of you
A good stiff Brush with Katy pushing it and getting the moss and dirt off.
I’m going to with power wash the dirt and moss off the red roof. It will be better to get the snow off in winter
Get yourself a palm nailer great show Chris Uk
I think they have one.
yeah I like the white roof by the way pressure washer old roof even crap on it just helps wear and tear it keep it clean
Maybe a pain, but I'd clean it off, & consider painting it, that build up will retain moisture, causing damage to your metal roof, other than that - keep up the good work
Great job guys in my opinion I think the moss should be removed from the red roof but it's ur choice either way looks great❤️🇨🇦
The barn shed looks great guys, you two did a great job and it’s going to be so helpful on your homestead, congratulations 🎉❤
Multi colored roof with the moss looks cool and it’s a barn.
City folks might be it’s not color coordinated that’s ok.
Good job
You could use green house corrugated plastic. Some greenhouse supply stores have remnants for cheap. 😊
nice job, well done - but - `presherwash the red roof, that stuff up there expants and damages the roof
Pre drill a hole the drive the long nails in.
Katie, the barn is looking great. It has more carecter than your square 🏠 house. I know you haven't finished yet. Keep it up 🎉
Greeting from Rancho de Vegas Greg and Katie. I vote for cleaning off the old roof section of the barn. First, you are already up there so use a push broom and knock it off. Secondly, it will hold moisture which will deteriorate your metal over time and provide a breeding ground for pesky insects. Third, because it holds moisture it also adds unnecessary weight to your structure. Finally, it will restrict the water, snow and ice from shedding off cleanly. I understand liking the natural look but since you really can’t see it anyway, do the bi-annual maintenance and avoid future worries.
PS: I love your dogs and the goats that think they are dogs.
PSS: “I know a family that will eat you” Hilarious!!!
You shouldn't leave the debris on the roof. And to say it's done when you didn't cap the ridge or flash where the new structure meets the old, is a bit premature. I predict that it will leak in many areas. Especially the upper parts of the "valleys".
Looks great and I do love that clear lets light underneath since you are closing it up with walls. It looks okay being white. That side will also get debris overtime. Hugs from Santa Barbara. 🤗😘🌹👏🍷😎🙏
Nice deal on the metal panels and poly panels look good too. I agree you can always replace them later on. Now you can move on to walls to be able to move stuff in.
Cannot wait till it is closed in. Will be so nice for you to have your tools closed in.
The barn is looking good already! I'd leave the old roof as is, as well.
Sheesh people are bossy in your comments today! You do what you like, it’s your house, barn, roof, and property. I always love seeing you guys and I hope that you’re having a lovely weekend! 😘❤️❤️❤️
Take the time now to match the roofs.
Hey, greg a little tip I learned from Marty Rainey on Homestead rescue. If you're cutting the aluminum corrugated sheeting, you can do it really clean and fast using a skill saw by just putting the blade on backwards.
Clean off the moss and dirt the roof will last longer
Light the barbecue. Put some cold ones in the cooler. Clear and wash the roof. Sometime in fall, repaint the red white. No rush. Less heat. For the footings, could you not have poured concrete around the porous areas, then dirt backfill?
Multi colored roof with the moss looks cool and it’s a barn.
City folks might be it’s not color coordinated that’s ok.
Huge improvement doing great so much to be done before season changes. Gardens look fab ... you both will need another vacation after all your projects
Only two things I could think of.....
#1. The new part of the roof you completed is white and that is a good color because during the hot part of summer
it will reflect the heat off the roof making it cooler beneath it ( unlike our summers at +100* ).
#2. Is the old part of the roof, red, made out of metal and if so will the buildup of leaves and moss hold moisture thereby
slowly rusting the metal?? Otherwise the new part you built looks very professional. Me southern AZ. (USA)
Awesome job, looks great. ❤❤❤
Remove the moss and then leave the roof as is. It's a barn and I like the old worn look. BTW, my leaf blower makes easy work of peeling the moss off my surfaces.
Looks wonderful you guy's!
Katie, right now in the USA red and blue do not go together. You are correct.
Hey yall, just my two cents, with all that moss on the original roof, it has no chance of sluffing off snow. If not too much snow, it will have insulating qualities because snow does insulate and stop drafts. Moss holds water and water will be able to dam up If you do pressure wash all the moss off, paint it with an automotive or enamel paint sprayed on.
I think the way you too work together is so romantic! It’s not all about champagne and candles it’s respect and mutual admiration and having fun! At least from my perspective. Love to watch you working harmoniously
IMO I would remove the moss and debris on roof as it will hold snow and increase the snow load (weight) on roof but just my opinion ..PS great job Greg on roof build
Red, White, and Blue would look great. 😁😁
I recommend clearing off the old side of the roof, Power wash if you can. Covered with debris will cause it to fail way faster.
Leave as is! Paint would just wear off & it will be covered in tree debris & moss just like red side in no time! Im sooo excited that Greg will finally gave a workshop/barn & giats are going to live that big space!! FANTASTIC JOB!!
The Red & White roof looks wonderful, just needs the Maple leaf. It makes me think of the first Canadian flag I saw as a child on the way to Bob-i-lo Island, an island amusement park sitting in the middle of the Detroit River. Wibndosr Ontario to the East, Detroit Michigan to the west. That flag waved so proudly on the rear of passenger ferry, that cool breeze, and the sun setting, What a day it had been, I conquered my fears of the mini roller coaster, my father, well, did not want to ride it again. I vote for the red Maple leaf. That flag waving, so vivid in my mind, some 55 years later./ Those goats so adoreable.
Sweet work guys!
Multi colored is fine for your roof. Makes it look unique. I would sweep off the debris from the old roof. There's a lot less chance of mold growing.
The moss on a metal roof has to be taken off or will damage it there will end up being leaks . Happy you got the roofing done on the addition looks fantastic . well done folks !.
Great job guys It's done ! Red & White look good :) But if you don't keep the tin cleaned off it will start rusting under the moss if it's not already, The dormer looks awesome & will give you a lot of light for sure"
The workshop looks great. Good call on building the atrium.
Looks amazing guys. ✌️😎
Great job. Looks good.
Looks nice...well done !!
Looks great😮
Looks good well done
Looks good!
Looks good, great job
Nice job!
Looks great
Looking Great Guys....
I love you guys and your journey. I lived in the Vernon and Fernie area for over 10 years. Living in New Brunswick now.
Very nice job, Martin!
Great job awesome video, progress,
What a team .
I used a power sheet-metal shear to cut my polycarbonate, If it isn't too thick for the nibbler it should cut it also.
Another job well done y’all.
Great job 👏🏽👏🏽 you guys are an amazing team 👍🏽👍🏽 so much done 🤩
Looks Nice
