Replacing rotten celluloid binding

- Vintage archtops, and Gretsch archtops specifically, often have celluloid rot in the binding. The celluloid over the past half-century loses its plasticity, and ultimately cracks and crumbles. In this video, I show that it only takes about 45 minutes to strip the binding from the neck and body.

Looks good. One thing you could try is, apply the CR glue, and spray the binding separately with accelerator, then stick it on. I've seen Dan Erlewine do that. He will also take a squeeze bottle, stuff cotton balls in the bottle, then spray a bunch of accelerator into the squeeze bottle. The he just "puffs" the accelerator on the part.

Zap Adhesives Formula 560 Canopy Glue will make your life much easier, it dries clear in 24 hours and can be wiped off with damp cloth
Sounds great except for the 24 hr dry time. Of the flaws CA glue has, bonding in a few minutes is a pretty big plus
Do you have to refinish after rebinding? On classic les pauls dont they finish over the binding? Maybe its not needed I wonder what people do in that situation.
I haven’t come back to this project, but when I do, I might mist lacquer over the binding or perhaps a light coat over the entire body.
I think people also just wipe shellac sometimes
Randy I have a Harmony, very similar to the one you’re working on here. It’s in much need of neck reset.

When I did the second Gretsch neck removal, it went a lot easier and I knew not to rock the neck, but rather push up against the heel (like the jigs you see do). I didn’t make a video of that, unfortunately
The homemade heat stick works great, and hopefully by seeing how I did it wrong the first time, you’ll get a better idea how to do it right. It’s not too terrible when you’re doing a beater guitar, so take a shot and good luck!

with care you can tape the binding in place then using solvent such as lacquer thinner or acetone it can be wicked along the seams. I've done this with success. lol as you mention a min after i comment🤓
Yeah, acetone is my preferred way to do it when I’m dealing with raw wood. Such a simple but effective procedure!

Do you have any links to the materials you used? Binding, glue, etc?
In this case, I was using cream binding from StewMac and thin viscosity super glue (from Hobby Lobby I believe)

Wow that looked easier AND faster then when I stained faux binding on my GGBO build.
The hardest part of binding is getting the channel cut properly. So in this case, everything came out cleanly from the factory groove and went back just as easy!
