Something I love in this episode that often gets overlooked in the council scene is that it's been 7 years and the old councillor is still struggling with the puzzle box that Mel gave him that was a simple child's toy =)
the other thing i liked, is that part where they talk about Stanwick, in the lore Stanwick is the mentor of Jayce and Viktor and does a few important thing, in Arcane, Heimer is the mentor and we don't know how the following event will happen, so that was a good way to tell us Stanwick is not gonna be part of the story
Jinx giving Silco the gem and hugging him gets me every time, because she's still that little girl saying, "I can help them." She just wants to help however she can and get approval from her family, bio or adopted. I mean, she's unstable for sure, but all the girl wants is to feel loved and approved of.
The "drunk guy on the blimp" is the same drunk guy starting a fight outside the brothel in Episode 1. He's actually a character model Fortiche Studios uses to test animations, and is based on one of the founding members of the studios. It cracks me up that they threw him in on those two situations.
It reminds me of Peter Jackson being in all of the Lord of the Rings as various background people. The guy at the Prancing Pony outside eating a carrot and the pilot of the pirate ship that Legolas' arrow that Gimli mis'directs'.
Caitlyn is actually my personal favorite character. Had to keep shut until now. That reveal at the end is the fucking best! Oh... not sure if you remember, but we saw Silco injecting the shimmer in his eye back in episode 1.
Hailee Steinfeld just PERFECTLY nailed the delivery of that line. You get 7 years of angst built up in that one sentence. Somehow we know exactly what Vi has gone through in just a 5 second scene. Brilliant.
You mentioned that Jayce has gone from around the lowest status he could have to the highest possible status. Notice that Viktor's status hasn't really changed. He was about as high as someone from the undercity can get when he was Heimerdingers assistant. After being an equal partner with Jayce in creating "Hextek", Viktor is still basically seen as Jayce's "Assistant". When Jayce asked Viktor why he would take the risk in helping him, Viktor answered "Do you think my lifes ambition was to be an assistant?". Jayce tries to bring Viktor onto the stage with him and share credit with him but it seems that Viktor sees himself the way that society sees him and is staying "in his place" where he is comfortable. Sorta rings with when Violet told Vander "I grew up knowing that my place is down here. I want Powder to have more than that.."
Yeah I feel terrible for Viktor in all honesty as he has really been screwed at every turn throughout his life. I so wanted him to go on stage to take credit and I was heartbroken when he didn’t, but mostly because I understood why he didn’t want to. Like many from the Undercity, they have an intrinsic feeling of not being as good as the rest, and although Viktor wants to change this, he doesn’t believe he will be around to see it.
I think it's not only about him growing up knowing his place, but I think Viktor has always had a chip on his shoulder about his disability, and has felt less than adequate because of it. Who wants a cripple as the spokesperson for the "future of hextech?" Which I believ also makes future episodes hit harder if his disability is the bigger reason for his insecurities.
Fun fact:The three drunk dudes saying "Happy Progress Day!" at the start are the three animation directors at Fortiche, get used to creator cameos like that in this show.
Just when you thought that Jinx introduction was so great… That introduction of VI in prison is one of the best character introductions I've seen in a long time. And it's so simple, yet so well planned!
Sorry, horror story villain in the shadows ending in a first visual of a little pig-tailed girl... "Hi!", who then proceeds to annihilate all the Firelights, beats Vi's re-intro.
Jinx introduction is absolutely perfect. After stating that few years have passed with Jayce and Caitlyn. We have few informations dealed when the two firefly came inside the cargo. As us, they know Jinx signature, so she became famous. They are terrorised by her, and immediately we see why: she kill 4 of them in few seconds! So, now she masterise her bombs, and she do not hesistate to take lives. In the same time, we see that her traumatismes and ptsd have increased. And she come in the scene breaking the 4th wall, with a "Hi", did you missed me, spectators? 'Cause now here I am. The whole character is presented in one scene. For Vi, it's even easier. She was in jail for years, and she improved her first power, that's all we know, and this is all she is. The character didn't evoluted all those years, except physically, because she couldn't.
You are following along really well and asking all of the right questions. Those questions will be answered in time. I'll just point out a couple things to keep in mind. Powder was never "quite right" in the head when she was little either. She tends to attach herself to one person and puts a lot of stock in proving herself to that person. Violet was that person for powder and Violet also defended Powder when the rest of the group would get down on her. Now that person is Silco... and we saw that the rest of Silco's group doesn't much care for Jinx. Sevika said "She's a problem and we all know it". Then Silco defends her. You are going to see dualities like this throughout the story between different characters.
I didn’t even think of the intense parallels between Vi and Silco. It starts to make a lot more sense when you observe it that way. As for Powder/Jinx, she definitely does have that attachment issue and her mental health problems definitely didn’t appear from nowhere. They’re just now way more prominent and intense. Thank you for pointing this out though as I love reading stuff like this 😄
Yeah, Powder has had the scratchy hallucinations going on ever since the first scene of Episode 1... at that point it was just during moments of trauma. Now her entire life is trauma.
It's easy to forget this far in, thinking that Jinx has gone off the deep end due to her reckless disregard for others' lives... but let's not forget that in the street brawl in episode 1, Powder was absolutely, *100%* ready to blow a guy up with an improvised nail bomb, and the only reason she didn't was because it didn't work. She even later remarks, with absolute glee, that she has prepared a nail bomb for the enforcers. Powder/Jinx, compared to her peers, was *always* the most casual about resorting to pretty extreme violence against people not in her in-group.
Heimerdinger's line "your hexgates have done wonders for our city. Brought scholars from distant lands, reignated passion in arts and science (...)" + the fact that the city has changed substantially, including the construction of a big ass teleportation tower: how could the characters NOT be older? It take years for these changes to happen.
About 15:40, it's really interesting, they don't paint Jayce as stealing the credit, they do show him being the front man for everything, but at the same time, Jayce does try to pose Viktor as an equal partner (saying that Viktor should join him for the speech), but if you pay attention at the timestamp you see the mug with his "golden boy" overshadowing Viktor.
In the old lore (which I'm not sure is still canon), Progress Day has a dark origin. Piltover and the undercity were, centuries ago, one city. However, the rich and powerful decided they wanted to make even more money; they planned to use explosives to make a strait through the city, so that boats could travel straight through rather than go around. However, when the day came, something went wrong. No one really knows what happened, but when the explosives were set off, they set off chain reactions. Earthquakes sunk a huge section of the city, and pockets of poison gas were exposed. Many people died, and ever since, the upper city became Piltover, more wealthy than ever, while what was sunk became the undercity. Piltover still celebrates that day as Progress Day, but to the undercity, it's a day of tragedy, and a very large reason why so many in the undercity hate and resent Piltover. And now, in this episode, we see history repeating itself; as you and the show stated, the hex gates are leaving the undercity even further behind, as Piltover prospers once again.
As tragic as this is, it really fits a lot of details into place as to why everyone feels the way that they do about each other. I do somewhat hope that this is still canon as it gives so much depth to the struggle and really shows how deep-seated the conflict is.
I find it interesting that while the Council as a whole is a very clear represantation of the problems in Piltover and the neglect of the Undercity, not all of them are at the same level of corruptness. We get two Arguments against closing the Hexgates that come from very different Angles. The Lady with the Gear Neacklace sais: "It threatens our Status as a global shipping lane. _Thousands would lose their income._" Refferring to the economical backlash of suddenly closing an industry that a large part of the population depends on (similar to phasing out Coal. It is not a bad thing in the long run, but that doesn't help the people in mining towns that have no other source of income) And then there is Mr. Couldn't-crack-a-childs-toy-in-seven-years. His Argument is "_My_ Shipments will be late. Should _I_ tell the Noxians their Wine will be Vinegar." His perspective is solely on his own, personal Profit. It is a testimont to how things are so often more layered and difficult then people think and how we have passed the point of easy solutions so long ago that now, everything is interconnected and dismanteling one part has greater rippleeffects across the whole System.
I think that shimmer has some regenrative qualities in ver ylittle doses. There also seem to be different versions of shimmer, since we saw someone at the club smoking it through their nose and they didn't hulk out, so i am guessing that over the time (I think it is 7 years) it has ben refined and diversified. But we saw that Deckert was almost indestructible, so My guess is that Silco takes shimmer for his eye because in this extremely small dose it keeps the pain and maybe the Infction(?) at bay
That does make a lot of sense. It definitely doesn’t seem pleasant, but then again, I don’t think anyone would enjoy getting a needle in their eye on a regular basis 😂 he definitely was busy during that time finding all the ways to profit off of shimmer.
It's interesting to me that people fall for this shorter, panicked character pulling away from Jinx being Vi. She's tiny and scared. Vi wouldn't react that way to seeing Powder again. She wouldn't react to anyone that way. And Vi would still be way stronger than her, just based on their builds up to now.
The "getting drunk on a blimp" comment made me remember something...In one of the "Bridging The Rift" videos, they said that the guys on the blimp were animated versions of some of the men from Riot Games/Fortiche (I don't remember which ones!) 😁 Cool huh? 😎
i was taking a minute to think and i think the stabilized crystals would be best used in productivity in all existing fields. Agriculture, mass production, inner city transportation, building operation, cheaper construction. As for making gauntlets and lasers safe for civilian use, the lasers already probably can only be set up in industrial settings. The gauntlets i guess are pretty versatile. I think the most innovative applications they could go for would be engineering in a micro scale. Magic historically seems to only have had use as weapons of mass destruction so I guess for civilian use there's not much reference. If the hexcores are remaining under government control, then it would probably have to either create a power grid or public infrastructure. What would improve people's quality of life? Food, shelter, entertainment, general customization, sports and freetime, art and music, transportation, time saving, computing, communication, surveillance, logical operations, hard material manufacturing, soft material manufacturing, medical research Could probably pick any of those civillian applications and improve it with hextech. But I do think they for the most part went about it fairly smartly, make the most simple object possible with it first, then let people find their own application for it. If Jayce had revealed the hextech, Piltover would be revealed to be one of the most significant military powers in the world. It would probably start an arms race with piltover at the center.
I really like how they didn't make the nameless council members blanketly evil... some are more selfish than others, but they all have valid logistical concerns, backed by their own motives. As a amall city state, a crippled economy WOULD lead to a loss of lives. They don't have the natural resources or redundancies that a large nation would have to help them absorb the hit of an economic depression. I like how the councilor that brought up the economy also defended the undercity. She is clearly practical, and paying enough attention to the suffering in Zaun to know the consequences of a halt in trade.
It honestly brings more realism to the council because even though some are heavily fantasy or sci-fi in their design, their behaviors mirror that of a number of current and historical societies. The complexity of the situation is certainly contributing to the problems and tensions occurring with the two cities.
I don't think Silco is taking shimmer with his eye needle. He was using that needle before they tested shimmer on humans for the first time with Deckard, remember? There's other reasons that are upcoming to think this, but it seems more likely that the needle is draining shimmer out of his mutated eye because the eye produces it.
I always saw it as a small injection of shimmer, to stunt the decay of his eye. I always saw Shimmer as a drug that when used in excess can be abused, but has medicinal properties when used in appropriate doses.
i'm also leaning towards it puncturing, not injecting. it doesn't seem like the device can be loaded with shimmer, the tip seems more like a needle than a syringe (a nurse in the arcane subreddit described the difference but i can't remember). and yeah, shimmer as a medicine would definitely not be developed before even being tested on humans in its unstable form. i think either his eye is producing shimmer from something to do with the river toxins, or the eye is a prosthetic singed gave him. maybe using genetic material from rio or something? idk, i'm not a scientist. i hope we get a clarification in the second season, or maybe it's just meant to be a mystery
In Arcane, simple answers are usually incomplete. Jayce is on the council because of Jinx's actions, Jayce's suggestion on how to deal with it impresses Heimerdinger (ensuring his vote), and Mel sees an opportunity. Without one of those elements, he wouldn't have been elected.
You probably already knew this, but Jayce was a patron of the Kirraman family... so he grew up with Caitlyn. We saw Caitlyn carrying stuff he bought in the undercity to his home right before it blew up. Caitlyn was on Jayce's side even after he had been kicked out of the academy and embarassing the Kirraman family... so it shows how far back their friendship goes. (All of this based on things you've already seen - I am being very careful in my comments) Silco added Powder as you saw in episode 3 to his gang so yeah.. he watched her grow up under his watch so he's more like a father to her. It's clear that when Marcus turned over Vi as the culprit who blew up the building, he was rewarded by the council with the Sheriff's rank (given Grayson's death) and that Vi has been in that prison this whole time jump.
Except that Marcus didn't actually turned Vi. (minor spoiler alert on next episode) there are no charges against Vi. Marcus was already Grayson's right hand so he probably didn't needed Vi to be ensured the promotion.
While I am not sure this was her primary goal, Mel just made a possible huge Mistake in giving Jayce a seat: The Council held 7 Seats before. This prohibits stalemates, which could lead to long and drawn out delays about important decisions. Many Real Wold ruling bodys operate similar. But now it is 8, giving the potential danger of a stalemate more weight. of course, i think that Mel wants mainly as many people on the Council that she can sontrol as possible, but it is, in my opinion, a moment of shortsightedness.
The Silco-Jinx relation is a bit weird (deliberately so by the creators), but it will become clearer. Part of it is that Powder/Jinx has grown physically (she's about 17-18 now), but she hasn't really grown mentally, due to her trauma. She still behaves like an 11 year old in some ways.
Yeah that makes sense as she can’t really let go of her past and as such she’s kind of stuck there. It was definitely uncomfortable for some moments but at other moments it seemed more genuine like a father daughter.
@@TheGamingTeacher1 Part of it is also that both Jinx/Powder and Silco are mentally just messed up, and with both experiencing some sort of sibling betrayal are the only people each can fully relate to on some level. And so there's some unusual closeness in there relationship over just father-daughter. So that makes for some uncomfortable viewing, deliberately, as it shows just how damaged both characters are.
I think part of the reason that this dynamic feels so uncomfortable is because it is the exact dynamic that predators seek out in the real world. While we don’t see evidence of anything inappropriate between Jinx and Silco, (there’s plenty that is not appropriate here, but you know what I mean), in many cases there would be. Jinx is exactly the type of broken little girl, desperate for approval, that could easily become the victim of a predator. Also, victims of that type may well not see themselves as victims. It’s all just kind of icky.
@@mariahdaley4773 that’s probably why it felt so icky to me. I’m happy they didn’t go that route in the show and instead showed truly what their relationship was.
@@TheGamingTeacher1 Most recently I saw her in the Army of the dead movie, but I do agree her voice has a bit of a familiarity that I cant quite place.
It seems to me jinx is a dangerous psycopath and Silco is too that's why he "loves" her because he sees himself in her and feels validated by her presence he's not alone anymore it's not really love.
This one has been giving me issues since Monday trying to post it as it got blocked for copyright by Netflix. They’re still reviewing my dispute but it was allowed to get posted as of today and will stay that way unless Netflix blocks it again.

Keep the reviews coming!
I disagree. Jayce isn't on the council because of Jinx. He is there because Mel wanted him on the council.
(All of this based on things you've already seen - I am being very careful in my comments)
Silco added Powder as you saw in episode 3 to his gang so yeah.. he watched her grow up under his watch so he's more like a father to her.
@@__-fm5qv all excellent points. They truly understand each other even if they aren’t always on the same page.
@@mariahdaley4773 that’s probably why it felt so icky to me. I’m happy they didn’t go that route in the show and instead showed truly what their relationship was.

Ella Purnell it's the va
I thought I recognized the voice! The name sounds familiar but I can’t place where I know her from…
@@TheGamingTeacher1 Most recently I saw her in the Army of the dead movie, but I do agree her voice has a bit of a familiarity that I cant quite place.
It seems to me jinx is a dangerous psycopath and Silco is too that's why he "loves" her because he sees himself in her and feels validated by her presence he's not alone anymore it's not really love.
Not Vi at the beginning, random firelight lookalike. Marcus threw Vi in jail ep 3½
time jump something like 7-10 years
Please tell me you're going to react to the Imagine Dragons - Enemy music video. It's also done by Fortiche :D No spoilers in it!
Episode 5 when? 😀
Check later tonight 👀
Out of curiosity have you seen Gravity Falls
I have not! I’ve heard good things though!
just FYI... this isn't showing up on "Arcane reaction" google search. I only found it because I subscribed.
This showed up in my recommended, after seeing the first three. Hadn't subbed yet. Have now.
This one has been giving me issues since Monday trying to post it as it got blocked for copyright by Netflix. They’re still reviewing my dispute but it was allowed to get posted as of today and will stay that way unless Netflix blocks it again.
@@TheGamingTeacher1 Yeah, I see it was posted a day ago but it only showed up for me a couple hours ago, and I search for Arcane reactions pretty regularly!
@@TheGamingTeacher1 fwiw after watching your ep 3 reaction, YT has consistently recommended your videos for eps 1 and 2, but not this one. This one I only found because I clicked on your channel directly to check your uploads for a new reaction.
So this video is definitely being treated differently by the algorithm.
@@jeffkoenig7402 yeah the dispute was approved so the copyright claim was dropped. I’m hoping that this means it’ll be in recommended videos from here on out but it was definitely frustrating. At least you won’t have to wait for the next reaction as it goes up tonight 😄
According to the producers, there was a 7 year time skip between episodes 3 and 4.
Wow that’s a lot of time for things to go from bad to worse.
@@TheGamingTeacher1 It also makes you wonder as how much Jinx and the Firelights have butted heads since they immediately knew that it was her. Also, for a little more background, before watching episode 7 I suggest you watch the imagine dragons enemy video. Episode 7 will hit harder if you do.
@@johnbowersox738 If I hadn't already recorded the rest of the show, I would have. I couldn't stop watching 🤣
I can believe the ammount of people that actually think that's vi at the start when you can clearly see her face just change to someone that doesn't resemble her at all except the pink hair. Jesus I try not to be mean but it's impossible when this happens lmao
