  • Harford County Public Schools offers half day or full day pre-kindergarten programs in elementary schools throughout the county. Pre-kindergarten, or Pre-K, will give your child a jump start in life and get them ready for kindergarten.
Pre-K classrooms in Harford County Public Schools introduce your child to learning with colorful classrooms, new materials, fun activities, and play, all led by caring, supportive, and certified, classroom teachers. Classroom assistants are key to ensuring the success of our students. Staff will guide your child as they develop their social and emotional skills through play and instruction in the classroom.
In addition, your child’s teacher will address reading, mathematics, problem solving skills, and their physical needs. Teachers will share information about your child’s experience and progress in school. The Pre-K program will work with you to connect your home, school, and our community to better meet the needs of your child.
Pre-K students have access to centers in the classroom that allow them to explore new books, educational toys, technology, and more. Your child will not only use their imagination in centers; they will experience a structured classroom that engages our youngest students and encourages a love of learning through a high-quality environment.
Children who are 4 years old on or before September 1 are eligible to begin the application process for Pre-K. You can print or pick up an application at any elementary school. The school will let you know before the start of the school year if your child is enrolled in the program.
If your home school does not have a Pre-K program, your child may attend a program at another school. You will not need to complete a boundary exception for PreK. Follow the directions on the application cover sheet to submit the application to the school of your choice.
Bus transportation is provided for children attending Pre-K in their home school. If your child attends a Pre-K program outside of your home school, you are responsible for transporting your child to and from school each day.
To apply for Pre-K, visit hcps.org and click “Register for School” on the Parents tab. Applications are available beginning the first Friday in May. You can print the application and return it to the school you wish your child to attend Pre-K. You can also visit any elementary school on the first Friday in May to pick up a copy of the application. Be sure to return your application to the school you would like to enroll your child in for Pre-K.
Pre-K is an exciting time for your child, and we look forward to meeting you and being a part of this major step in your child’s education.
