    This video is so thorough and highly detailed. Honestly though I don't think most of us have the talent to achieve these superior results. Even with the step by step instructions you are clearly an expert on this process where most are not even close to that. Hehe.

      The key is to not be in a hurry and do each step the best you can. Test out on scrap wood first to get you confidence. Cheers John.

    Excellent job. Also you speak like someone that had a few rags burst into flames once. I had some start on fire once back in the 80's in the shop, fortunately in a small metal "rag can". it only takes one time.

      Haha. Actually I've never had it happen. But I had a friend that did experience it. One of his guys threw some rags in a sink and forgot about them. Luckily the alarm sounded and it was put out. Can't be too careful. Cheers John 🍻

      Thank you. I just picked up a complete set of wood for my friends Jaguar that he wants me to finish. I'll probably shoot some video on that. Its quite a lot of parts, plus some veneer repairs. Cheers John.

    Great job, really nice looking. Looks a bit too glossy for Southern California. I plan to make mine as flat as possible. Against a dark blue and somw sun angles, the trim is too visible in tge windshield reflection.

      @mercedesmaintenance.6339  3 года назад +1

      Thank you. I get what you mean. If I were you, go for a flat final two coats to give the look you're after, but still retaining clarity. As I said in the video semi gloss, satin and flat all have flattening agents in them to kill gloss. Try to avoid using them in the beginning build coats. Cheers John.

      @@mercedesmaintenance.6339 i should have mentioned the w108 I just bought has a dark dash and the wood is so faded, it looks like its been sanded down. When i drive during sunset, I'm reminded that I need to darken mine.
      I've been trying to get ideas for this car and today I decided I'm going to just get all new wood. Its in better condition than my previous W108 but I'm more comfortable going that route now. I'll be back later to this video when i start the process.

    Great Video. Do you know if this will work with a newer mercedes? I have a w210 that has wood trim that has been bleached. Lots of discoloration, that none of the trim matches.

      If its wood I Don't see why not? I think the biggest challenge would be removing the surface finish. Here in the States you can no longer buy Methylene Chloride stripper. The stuff nowadays can struggle with certain finishes. Matching color? Experiment on some similar scrap before committing. Let me know how you get, on or if you have any other questions.
      Cheers John 🍻

      @@mercedesmaintenance.6339 That's a good point. I guess I was wondering if you knew if the finishing they used in later cars was any different to remove? I mostly see people peel/chisel off the finish instead of stripping it. Your method is a lot cleaner.
      I think I would end up redoing it all, since I'd like to change to a darker color. It's a beautiful birdseye maple. The grain is fantastic, but the discoloration and finish cracks are killing me. I'll be waiting until spring next year, work keeps me away from causing trouble at home. I certainly will reach out if I have any other questions.
      Thanks, Vic.

      @@JirafaWood The Modern finish I'm sure is going to be a very tough finish to remove. If I were you I would experiment on a small inconspicuous area first. I've seen people have good success after they apply the stripper is to cover with cling film and let it sit. It stops the air drying out the stripper. good luck. All the best. John.

    Thanks for sending this video to help me prepare to refinish my wood. Great resource!! One other question, how did you (safely) remove this windshield piece? Concerned about breaking it of course.

    • @mercedesmaintenance.6339
      @mercedesmaintenance.6339  2 года назад +1

      Hi john. First remove the upper speaker grill (two screws) hidden between the slats. Then once out you will see two screws holding brackets that attach to the wood. Remove them. Then you'll have to remove the A pillar covers. Some earlier cars had just two screws. Later ones had hidden clips. to remove these the whole trim needs to pull into the car with a toward the interior. Then the wood can be lifted out. Its an extremely tight fit and will have to be carefully bowed slightly to remove. try giving it as much support as possible. Good luck Cheers john.

      Thank you for your comment. In this video I used a brand from a company called "Hellmsman" but since the video was made I now use a company called "ZAR" It flows out beautifully and has a faster dry time. Approximately 2 hours in the right temperature and with good air flow. Here is a link. Thanks again. Hi, I'm thinking about doing the same (refinishing) my 1971 280S windshield trim. Any chance for you to share how to correctly remove it/took it off (the trim)? Thanks in advance! Cheers & Stay SAFE!

    • @mercedesmaintenance.6339
      @mercedesmaintenance.6339  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for the comment. First you have to remove the A pillar covers. Depending on your car/year it's either two screws or two clips. The clip design you'll have to pull the trim back toward the inside of the car to un hook it. Next remove the speaker grill on top of the dash. Under there it will give you access to two more screws that hold the wood trim on. remove those. Now this is where it gets tricky, you'll need to lift the trim up and VERY carefully ease it out. it will have to bend very slightly, try to give it as much support as possible as you do this. It can bend but of course has its limits depending on it's condition. Good Luck. Cheers John.

      @@kikonzx1411 you're welcome. When I reinstalled I actually trimmed just a small amount from both ends to make reinstall less stressful:) It will be covered by the A pillar trim. Use the fade line as a guide. All the best and you stay safe too. Cheers John🍻
