Rick Riordan said he casted on vibes, and he definitely fits the vibes. I know it would feel better for him to look like Chiron, but I guess this is Ricks chance for Rick to play around with the story. I guess we should blame the movies for not giving us book accurate characters, and now we’re annoyed that a show for a new audience isn’t that book accurate portrayal.

  • @alexrobi1176

Most of the characters don't look like their book counterparts. Rick did appearance blind casting and looked for the best actors for the job. Also a thing with child actors is there's a lot more important things to consider like experience and ability, how much they feel like the character, and the chemistry they have with the other child actors. I'm pretty sure it was the chemistry which sold Rick on Grover and Annabeth.

  • @cryingtomatohead8626

Im willingly to forgive them not looking a 1 for 1 with their book counterparts as long as they bring the feel of the characters with obvious more updated things. With Rick being so involved I hope that this rings true. I know a lot of people were disappointed that he was blonde and that Annabeth and Chiron were black (no. Being dissapointed that characters from your favorite series were race swapped is not racist as long as you dont hate on the actors or have that disappointment turn to hate), but after seeing so many trailers and seeing what the actors thoughts were on their characters, I feel like it's in good hands. I am so excited fornthe series premiere next month.

thats what ive been saying. i really think the actors can do great, but it still doesnt feel right that they are different than how they were described in the books. I mean, everyone, and i mean everyone who read the books then watched the movies hated the fact that Annabeth had brown hair in the movies, yet, we're just supposed to go with a complete character change in the show? its a little bit irritating, because camp half-blood has a lot of diversity, and i feel like those characters are undermined a little by changing other characters "for inclusion"

    • @brandon3920
      @brandon3920 8 месяцев назад +14

I agree with that 100%. I got into the series a bit later (I was in high school at the time), and Annabeth became my favorite character. When I watched the Mythology Guy’s video comparing the movie (that doesn’t exist) to the books, the comics depicted Annabeth how I felt it should: blonde hair and white skin, so I was a bit disappointed myself to see the race swap.
But I am also willing to give the actress a chance. If she does portray Annabeth how she’s depicted in the books: then I’ll take it.

I don’t care as much that Chiron is black, saying as I’m pretty sure his skin color is never specified in the books. But annabeth is literally described to be white with blonde hair and grey eyes, and her actress has none of those traits. No hate to her actress who I think will do a phenomenal job playing the character, but I’m not a fan of Disney race swapping for the sake of diversity and for the sake of the story.

With the new cast, Riordan feels that everyone involved is "perfect," even if they don't look exactly like how they might have been written in the original books. With Scobell, Riordan noted, "Did I care that his hair is a different color than what is described in the book? Not at all. He just felt like Percy.” With Simhadri's Grover, Riordan similarly added, "Does he look exactly like I describe him in the book? No. That doesn’t matter."
"Leah impressed me from the moment I met her. She has that sort of steel that makes her a leader, but there’s a bit of vulnerability to her," the author went on to say about Jeffries. “Now, again, does she look like Annabeth looks in the books? No. Was that important to me? No. If anything, it was a massive benefit to broaden the cast in terms of representation.”

It's a pretty sloppy method, but it gets the job done at little risk to the actual direction of the story, which is their main job.
It's mainly a budget issue that they're trying to solve due to a developed story being too complex to write something into.
More writing=more costs, employee pay hours, and time before production
Less writing= Less losses before profits, less employees, less hours to pay for, less time before release, and faster profits due to less production time.

I would argue that while true to a point, this is still a visual medium. It's no longer a piece of literature, and therefore the physical appearance of the character has a much greater impact on the impression imparted to the audience than in a book.
The "vibe" of an actor more closely matching the feel of the character form the book is a fair point. Matching that is certainly valuable to a point. But the physically of a character can be just as important. If you cast a 90lb, 6ft tall, rail of a man as a heavyweight boxer, but he has the vibe of a fighter, people still aren't going to be able to see the character as who they were ment to be. A drunk, abusive, disgusting slob of a person shouldn't be seen relatively cleanly put together, timid looking, and having the general additude and vibe of a dumb but harmless milenial dad.
I could go on and on, but my point is that many of these characters on the page are shaped by the wording of the author in your head. Some changes can be made, and are expected to be, in comparison to a mental image. But if the dissonance between description and casting appearance is so stark in some cases, you've put one thing at to high of a priority over another. An actors general impression can be changed through, and hold on for a minute here, acting. But the physical traits that also make the character can often be much harder to change. I think it’s just one of the issues of a live action series. You won’t always find actors who both look like the characters, and can give a good performance ESPECIALLY with child actors. So you kinda have to prioritise getting good actors over faithful appearances.

I really hope the show's gonna be good, and if it is, then I can forget if the characters don't look like they should, but some things, like Annabeth being blonde, and Percy's green eyes are mentioned a lot in the books. I'm not super jazzed about all the race swaps, I've never really been happy about them with only a few exceptions, but I'll giving the show a fair shot r regardless. The story changes are also kinda strange, especially when they don't seem to make sense given what we see in the books. While I'm sure the overall story will be way more faithful, and Rick okayed these changes, I'm still kinda disappointed that we didn't finally get book accurate depictions, especially when some of the changes to the characters also affect other characters. Like annabeth would logically change Athena since she took a lot from her mother in looks in the books. Gabe's actor honestly just doesn't look bad enough for the character. Nancy is actually pretty book accurate, and remains a ginger which i wasn't sure would happen. I'm hoping the acting and story, effects and sets are good though to counteract all these weird changes.
One thing i am really disappointed about is that they didn't cast Logan lerman as Poseidon. It would've been a great way for him to have a in the series in a more positive way as i saw a few fan casts for him

Clarrise technically never had her skin described in the books… just her hair and eyes… and she's like, 5’6 in the Last Olympian so… those kinda muscles on that small a body… sound pretty nuts.

Expecting a 1 to 1 recreation is just never gonna happen. With the power of hindsight, they can change many things in the story of the first book to flesh it out. Don’t get me wrong, I love the first book… but there are a lot of things wrong with it. Like why does Percy know so much about Greek myths even though he fails every class he studies, including Latin, which he himself says after he takes the final exam? Why does Mr. Brunner just disregard the very apparent danger Percy is in at Yancy? Grover couldn’t help with the fury, and Hades isn’t known to just stop after one failed attempt. Luke and Percy also felt a bit rushed, so maybe Hermes is there to set up the parallel between him and Luke to Percy and Poseidon?

As a black individual and a die-hard fan of this whole series that got me through rough times at school, yeah, a lot of race bended characters is interesting. One or two is a given but changing a lot of them is interesting to say the least. All that said, it's not the end of the world if there is a difference color to their skin. There are ALWAYS going to be a difference in material at any given point. The dialogue is different, the costume is different, the hair alwayyys wrong (rip blonde comic book characters) the dynamic a little different. And all those things don't change much or go unnoticed. Sometimes can make it better or more fun. Remember when Samuel Jackson was Nick Fury? In the comics he was always white, only ONE run was he actually black and that was within one of the worst and most hated of Marvel runs. Remember when Chris Pratt was Mario? We hated that it was him and not someone Italian and how bad it was going to be. Not only did he do great, the brothers didn't even a fucking Italian accent and everyone still loved the movie. Morgan Freeman replaced a ginger character in Shawshank Redemption, no one was the wiser about it. Despite Aquaman being white with blonde hair, Jason Momoa killed the role while being neither. James Earl Jones voices Darth Vader, didn't make Vader's voice any less awesome.
These changes hurts the og appearance, not the performance or effect or even value. Am i saying Race-swapping/bending is a good thing? No, not at all! Fuck that. I rather have lesser know black or raced characters just be more important or make something new. I have my moments when i hate it. I remember fuming when they casted at a black woman as Starfire in the Titans HBO show, i would rant about it all the time. But as time went on, i went to enjoy the character in the show just fine. Now the show wasn't that good tbh, but Starfire being black had nothing to do with how the show performed. What i am saying, is that we need to take these changes with a grain of salt. We need to fight for lesser characters of race to get the spotlight instead of race-swapping og characters but at the same time we don't need to flip Tyr's temple if it characters get race swapped. At the end of the day, it is the writing and storytelling that breaks an adaption.

Honestly I don’t really have a problem with the characters not looking like that do in the books as long as they act like they should. At the end of the day they also have to cast actors they can find, and especially with child actors it’s harder to find kids that look like what you want for characters

While it will certainly take some getting used to, I don't mind the characters looking different from the books all that much, as long as the actors and actresses were chosen based on their ability to portray the characters rather than to fill out some representation checklist.

i did notice a couple things in this trailer that i maybe dont like. idk. in this video at 8:59, it looks like percy has a camp necklace with at least 4 beads, even though hes not even supposed to have a necklace at this point in the story. and he has riptide during the fight with the minotaur??? that was exactly what they did in the movie, and idk about you guys, but i feel like that diminished how impressive he was in that battle. the whole point of it in the book was that he fought and defeated the minotaur empty-handed. thats why everyone at camp was impressed and a little jealous. also, you cant really tell his eye color in this trailer, but i looked it up and it looks like walker scobell has BLUE eyes. im not sure if theyre doing colored contacts or what, but i hope they do make his eyes green. thats why hes such a heartbreaker lol. and then there are a couple things he mentioned here that i agree with, mainly the race-swapping. im fine with percy's look, bc he definitely has the right personality for it, and hes actually a good actor. but annabeth? im not trying to be racist or anything, my main problem is her hair. shes supposed to be blonde. her race might not be an important part of her character, but her hair color is. the first time we get to see her perspective in the books, the mark of athena, she mentions that her being blonde means that she has to work twice as hard to prove herself at everything. because of the "dumb blonde" stereotype. she breaks that stereotype a lot, bc shes blonde and shes also probably the smartest character in any of the books. again, im not trying to racist or rude, and no hate to the actress, i bet she'll do a great job. these are just my personal thoughts. i think i'll have a hard time reconciling annabeth with leah jeffries on screen.

As a Greek i don't really have a problem with Anabeth cause if you want to find an excuse for for dark skinned Greek person you can, like especially after Alexander the great there were a lot of black people that spoke Greek but also it does feel strange when it comes to Chiron since he like you said had not been black in the myths so i do feel like that's kinda pushing it
Although i should add i am not THAT big of a fan of the Percy Jackson books i have only read the first one

This is what I say for every "race change" that happens when adaptations reach the big screen: Look at the story. If the story being told is not suffering as a result, then bringing up a race change to a character is actually adding fuel to a social media fire that you're not paying enough attention to. In this case with a story about mythological characters, commenting on race is especially unnecessary and thus only serves to be damaging in the long run. Chiron is a centaur, he's not a modern Greek human. Horses have multiple skin colors, and yes, that includes all dark skin horses. That's really the only thing that needs to be said for Chiron's case, but let's go further into the idea of a "Greek race identity". Much of Greek history that we've been able to recover goes back to a time where there was no centralized "Greek" identity to the people living in the Balkans. What you had were multiple different cultures who vaguely spoke similar languages (sometimes) and who worshiped some of the same gods. And yes, being so close to Africa, there's a belief in the historic community that the differing skin colors that likely inhabited the Balkans were as big of an effect as which culture a person identified with. In fact, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone during that time as pale white as some of the anglo-saxon actors who've portrayed ancient Greek characters over the last century. So even if Rick Riordian actually did dedicated a sentence in the first Percy Jackson book to how pale Chiron's skin is, any "race change" in this case really isn't important or even worthy of commentary to the actual story being told. The benefits of casting Annabeth and Chiron as they did far FAR outweighs whatever "issue" people think it's causing to the story: It allows the black kids who love reading Percy Jackson to see the new series and say "Look, there I am!", something that they can't always do in mainstream media. Have you ever thought maybe there were plenty of little black girls who read the books and envisioned themselves as Annabeth? How excited they were to see the new trailer? That's more important than anything to me, and anything else is just a smokescreen for people who're even slightly put off by anything that alters the status quo that they're very very comfortable with. I'm just saying, it's fine to discuss race change in media where it hurts both the story and the people it's portraying, but there are other times when you probably shouldn't spend 20% of a video discussing this kind of casting decision in a case where it does far more good than any perceived grievance we can come up with. You're honestly just giving certain people justification to their unjustified rage. Just a thought...

making an adaptation that's not intended for fans of the original sounds like a really terrible idea for so many reasons. It's the one audience you can guarantee you'll have and it's the audience that will judge you the harshest so surely it's the audience you most want to appeal to?

I dont really get the take on “the characters arent defined by your race”. At point blank reading it makes sense sure. But that doesnt mean that characters should just be swapped even if their race isnt a factor in their character. Why not just get actors who look like or are capable of looking like the characters they will be playing? You are trying to adapt these characters for the fans of them. Wouldnt the fans want to be able to see how the characters they like actually look when they get to see them adapted? Bruce Wayne isnt defined by his race. Neither is Clark Kent. Nor Peter Parker. But they certainly shouldn’t be race swapped.
The new How To Train Your Dragon movie has already announced it’s first 2 castings of Astrid and Hiccup and they are both not the race of the characters. And when asked about it the actor for Astrid said they wanted ti add more diversity to the island of Berk and not focus to much on Vikings. You’re telling me they could find someone who resembles Hiccup or Astrid or are capable of resembling them?
Sure there are still characters who have race swapped and i still enjoy watching like Heimdall, The Ancient One for examples. But i really wish that they would’ve been adapted as their comic selves so much more instead.
If it’s an adaptation of a character who never got a description on what they look like fine. But a lot of these characters have official descriptions or images of them from the creators

I am really over the Disney race swapping. They never swap a character to be Chinese or Native American or any other race than African American which makes it feel like it has noting to do with true diversity.
