It worked cause the missile first had to climb to 80,000ft, to a target moving away at Mach +3. Until the 1980s most missiles lacked the guidance or the range to reach it.
Which is one of the many reasons the Soviets invested so heavily in interceptors like the original MiG-21 concept, the Su-15, and the MiG-25. They helped form a comprehensive net where they could track a target coming in through ground radar stations and scramble interceptors with such accuracy that even Blackbirds were able to be intercepted for long enough to fire an R-40 should the need arise

Ah, "Dogfights"was one of my favorites growing up. The HC has uploaded full episodes on their YT page in the USA. Great to watch some re-runs from time to time. Good to see a fellow fan :)
There's been so many annual war thunder videos Jingles is gonna start opening with, "Praise the emperor! In the grim darkness of the forty first millenium, there is only war... (thunder)"
I know you don't do many of these War Thunder videos and it's always the meme of how long it's been in between posting but I love these videos and enjoy every second of them.
Damn I never cared for War Thunder (with their awful monetization) but these fights look so fun. As a flight sim nerd, some of that flying was incredibly impressive. I'm sure it's not modeled as accurately as in a flight sim, but this pilot was incredible.
As a flight sim nerd (assuming you are also a aviation nerd) you should definitely try War Thunder. You get away without spending money for a while, especially at lower tiers. There are so many aircrafts you can experience, although only a few fighters are really meta and competitive. If you are a guy who could play for your own enjoyment, not being a tryhard and you like prop driven aircrafts it is worth a try since it is for free essentially. The unlock grind is bearable at the beginning.
Not sure what your reasons are for only doing a limited number of War Thunder videos a year are but I'm hoping you do a lot more of them. Ground forces battles as well as air battles. I still play World of Warships somewhat but I mostly War Thunder now. Any way love your commentary. Keep it up sir. Cheers!
Hey Jingles, I won't be able to make it to the Q&A today (today for you at least, it's 2300 here in the US right now...) on the 4th. I just wanted to say you have been a big influence in my life over the past 10 years, keeping me a gamer at heart and introducing me to all sorts of amazing content. I just finished binging your XCOM playthrough in 3 days and can't believe that I ignored those uploads when you put them out. You have put me down another rabbit hole of fanfictions to read now. Thank you so much for that. Love from the USA.
Thanks for the video Jingles. I sent that replay in so long ago I'd forgotten so it was a welcome surprise to get on a rough day :-) Not sure if you noticed it at the end but Mig-15 trick... I was pulsing the flap key to get the benefit of the tighter turning circle without breaking them off... if it's stupid but it works...
My Uncle flew the F6F, F9F, FJ2/3 and FJ4, as a Marine Corps pilot. Ejected from an FJ3, that had flamed out, which crashed into the Mississippi River, he landed on a sandbar by parachute and was picked up by a barge tug. He did stay with the aircraft long enough to guide the plane so it did go into the river, away from people. When he got out of the Marine Corps, he went to medical school and subsidized his time as a student; by crop dusting nearby farms. He did become a much beloved Medical Doctor locally. He had some great stories of his time in service and has since passed, I think it's been almost 15 years now.
Jingles the Canberra could fly higher than any aircraft including the U2. There is a famous photo of a Canberra taking a photograph of a U2 from above.
Jingles, the "the missile is always faster" was the reason the SR-71 was developed. Though you ARE right in that it is true for any other plane, especially fighters as they need to get close enough to use their own weapons. On a side note, while the Sabre DID start with 6x .50 MGs, it DID later on get a quartett of 20mm autocannons if i remember correctly.
A few notes about that dogfight: The MiG-15 had the advantage a number of times and (as far as I can tell) threw it away and put the FJ-4 on his 6. For example, in the vertical towards the end he turned out when he had the energy advantage and (with the other one out of missiles) could have continued upwards to get the FJ-4 even slower, at which point the MiG has even more of an advantage. Also, when you said "getting him off his tail is proving to be difficult," the MiG had the Fury in a stall and had excellent positioning, as can be seen when the Fury nosed down and the MiG slotted in on his 6 (though he then overshot, which was a miscalculation). I have seen a lot of people wish for more WT videos, and I would like that too, but getting a grasp on different plane's br's (this was a downtier) and on the tactics of energy fighting would be nice so as not to give people the wrong idea.
@tokul76 Aim 7 only the C/E/F variants, and only when fired from close enough to catch up before they ran out of fuel. Assuming you actually go by the CLAIMED max speed of the SR71, Mach 3.3 (it could go faster but we'll let the military keep their secrets). The Aim7 is only 200m/s faster. Faster, yes. Faster enough? It would take the SR71 26 seconds, assuming we believe it's max speed and the aim 7's max speed and range, to go from wherever it was when fired upon to outside of the AIM7's range. Given that the Aim7 is only 200m/s faster. that means the launching aircraft would ahve to be than around 5.6km from it. Given the likely situation... Yea the Aim 7 can't do the job. Aim54... probably. Particularly the C variant, the A and B are in more or less the same situation as the 7 but with about five times the leeway for takeoff. Still need to take off well in advance of it and hope it doesn't turn, but way more possible. And the R77 is in the same situation as the lesser Aim54 variants... but with the disadvantage of not having the operational ceiling to reach it anyway. Though yes, there are missiles that were becoming genuine threats, combined with the development of *proper* stealth, rather than 'you can't hit me neenerneener' stealth, which saw the SR71 retire. Though arguably not because it needed to be retired or it would start being downed and more because they didn't want to risk its perfect record, that and how stupidly expensive they are...
You know, Jingles, what you said about the MiG-15 sucking gasses from the guns into the engine reminds me of something I read in a guide for World of Warplanes a few years ago. Talking about the IL-40 and IL-40P, Soviet tier IX and X Attack aircraft respectively, it said that on the IL-40, firing the nose mounted 23mm guns could have a similar effect on that aircraft's engines, the intakes were in the... root, I think the word is for it, of the wing. Supposedly to solve that, on the IL-40P the moved the intakes to the nose and slung the guns under the belly. Makes it look a bit like an elephant's truck, if you ask me.

VMF(A)-232 Is a Marine Aviation squadron and is the most decorated attack squadron in the United States Marine Corps, it's also the oldest being activated in 1925.
The North American FJ-4 Fury is a swept-wing carrier-capable fighter-bomber for the United States Navy and Marine Corps. The final development in a lineage that included the Air Force's F-86 Sabre, the FJ-4 shared its general layout and engine with the earlier FJ-3, but featured an entirely new wing design and was a vastly different design in its final embodiment. early variants of the F-86 (mk1A/B) were unreliable under combat conditions and according to combat veterans the Mig-15 was 'a tough 'ol bird' when trying to shoot at it with it's six .50's, sure it could be damaged but trying to shoot it down was difficult. The Mig had a higher service ceiling and an interchangeable ammo box that could be swapped out quickly as opposed to the F-86 which had to be rearmed by feeding the belts into the airframe which took time... cool dogfight vid, appreciated that
Another difference between the MiG's & Sabres in the 50's was that the US pilots had compression suits, Soviet (and countries supplied by them) didn't. It meant US pilots could hold higher G manoeuvres for longer.
Brother Ectar: Good News! We've got some intel from an unlikely source! Inquisitor Waifu: What? Where from? Brother Ectar: There's this servitor called Mighty Jingles that has just uploaded his annual War Thunder video!
Always good to see an actual dogfight, instead of missile spam (air or ground). Still miss playing this game when it was mostly WW2 based. Tech levels just kept going up and as a casual, just couldn't keep up.
I remember when you first got me into war Thunder when you were doing videos almost every day. I miss those days of just being a college kid playing war thunder and watching Jingles
Sad we get only one replay for warthunder becuse thir pretty fun to watch. Then again all the rest of the content is a blast. Love the hard work keep it up.
Hmm if I recall correctly a primary change from the FJ-4 to the FJ-4B was that the 4B had 6 hard points for missiles compared to the original 4. My father in law was a naval aviator from 43 to 63. He and I would discuss such things from time to time.
I spoke to a Canadian who flew the CF-86. Knowing full well that the MiG suffered from horizontal stability and had twice the climb, I asked what made the F-86 so much better. He said it had redundancy that the MiG didn't. I asked why .50 cals instead of 20 mm. He said .50 cals were better. Both are simply not true, but he believed it nevertheless. Apparently prototype F-86s suffered from compressor failure when their 20mm cannon were fired, so they went back to .50s .
Interesting fact for you jingles the RAF deployed Canberras as fighters to belize to counter Guatemalan mustangs during a royal visit. The jets had the quad 20mm packs fitted.
Not that it makes much of a difference, as you're not gonna dogfight in a Canberra and do well, but the Canberra B Mk 6 IS actually armed with 4 forward facing 20mm Hispano cannons, and the American variant, the B-57B, has 8 .50 cals, M3s if I recall correctly. Presumably more for strafing than actual dogfighting. The Canberra B Mk 2 (which one of the Canberra's in the game is) does not have any guns, and neither does the B-57A.
Most F86 didn't have a proper search Radar. It had just a radar gunsight. But it could not scan or track. Just to avoid missunderstandings. The major advantage of the F86 was its Supersonic capable wing and control surfaces. The Mig15 would always suffer from massive compressibility issues. Especially since, for its time it was very powerful and it could not only get transsonic I a dive, It could do that too itself in level flight. It was so powerful it coul literally destroy itself by going to fast.
Lol reminds me of my Planetside 1 days, I'd fly the Liberator two seater bomber solo, use it and it's nose cannon like a fat fighter/Warthog against fighters, other bombers and tanks etc. Since it wasn't a simulator it had a nice advantage of being a VTOL so I'd also use it like attack helicopter as well, pop over hill to unload the nose cannon into stuff then duck back down behind cover. Rarely ever had a second pilot with me gunning the anti-ground belly cannon. After they put the giant mechs (they called them Battleframe Robotics) into the game I'd do the attack helicopter part a lot and get behind them and hit their shield generators, then killing them quick. I so miss that games, had lots more fun in it then then Planetside 2.
Actually Jingles, while IRL taking a sustained dogfight would be a bad idea for the MiG, in the context of the game were the MiG-15Bis get access to G-Suits and pilots and airframes have higher G-Tolerance than they would IRL, it IS a good idea to take sustained dogfight in the MiG since while it may initally loose due to its low AOA capabilities, its powerloading is considerably superior to the Saber/Fury, regardless is better to take the fight in the vertical were the MiG has an even greater advantage.
Hey Jingles, great vid! I believe that 'yoyo' manuever was the one you asked about? Iirc, it's refered to as a Rolling Scissors. I'm not a pilot though, so as you say yourself.. don't quote me on that.

Another Wartinder video from the venerable Mighty Jingles in my lifetime? *PRAISE THE GNOME GOD*
No one tell Jingles that War Thunder added 2 funny shitbarns: The Sturmtiger and the BT-42. It might prompt him to do another annual video next week.
Sad we get only one replay for warthunder becuse thir pretty fun to watch.
Then again all the rest of the content is a blast.
Love the hard work keep it up.
Another year passed. It is now 2952, the year star citizen went live
"He's just ripped his own flaps off" - That sounds painful
Warthunder dogfights can be so cool to watch. They can get so technical.
More War Thunder content please! Love it when you cover it!
I can't even remember the last time I saw a war thunder vid from you. Been watching your channel since w.o.t. was in beta.
I kind of expected Jingles would have done a video on the Harrier VTOL jet by now
crazy ivan, one of the most fun units in red alert 2. RIP Carville
Good morning! I was about to go to bed, but Jingles is doing his thing... Sleep can wait for 20 minutes
I think they are called 'Ordnance Hard Points'
Love your war thunder videos jingles.
Hmm if I recall correctly a primary change from the FJ-4 to the FJ-4B was that the 4B had 6 hard points for missiles compared to the original 4.
My father in law was a naval aviator from 43 to 63. He and I would discuss such things from time to time.
Must be the year 2065 and John Taylor has this to say to us.
John Taylor: Outcome Train Go Boom
I'm sitting here thinking "can you fly at those speeds with flaps extended??? ...." at that exact moment: BOOM!
Great video.
Also, there's other game modes for War Thunder. Tho they do allow respawns which may not be up your content alley.
I used to dislike your yearly Star Citizen comments, but as the years go by I increasingly enjoy them 🙂
Not that it makes much of a difference, as you're not gonna dogfight in a Canberra and do well, but the Canberra B Mk 6 IS actually armed with 4 forward facing 20mm Hispano cannons, and the American variant, the B-57B, has 8 .50 cals, M3s if I recall correctly. Presumably more for strafing than actual dogfighting.
The Canberra B Mk 2 (which one of the Canberra's in the game is) does not have any guns, and neither does the B-57A.
The B-57B in War Thunder has 8x .50 cals, but IRL many were eventually refitted with 4x 20mm M39.
It was so powerful it coul literally destroy itself by going to fast.
the things attached to the wings are called Pylons (pie-lons) inside them it looks like the mig has 3 bomb racks each.
So excited for the War Thunder video!
More WAR THUNDER PLEASE! I would personally like it to fill the chaos gate spot ;).
Love how Jingles comments this like a cricket match
Angry what, Jingles?
Razzin’?
Have you heard of grapes? 😅
Good morning and Happy Caturday Jingles! Thanks for all that you do!🦊
Actually Jingles, while IRL taking a sustained dogfight would be a bad idea for the MiG, in the context of the game were the MiG-15Bis get access to G-Suits and pilots and airframes have higher G-Tolerance than they would IRL, it IS a good idea to take sustained dogfight in the MiG since while it may initally loose due to its low AOA capabilities, its powerloading is considerably superior to the Saber/Fury, regardless is better to take the fight in the vertical were the MiG has an even greater advantage.
This guy would make Robin Olds proud.
At a glance on the video title, I thought subs also came to WT naval.
Wait what? I swear we already had our yearly War Thunder video this year.
We did, it was the one with like 3 KV-2s in it.
How the years fly by in the world of Jingles!
Hey Jingles, great vid! I believe that 'yoyo' manuever was the one you asked about? Iirc, it's refered to as a Rolling Scissors. I'm not a pilot though, so as you say yourself.. don't quote me on that.
Wow its been 10 years since Star Citizen was announced and it's still in alpha lol.
Jingle's intro for War Thunder always brings me back to when the game wasn't quite so shite.
It's that time of year again!
Ah hell yeah war thunder time! It’s been decades!
