1968 ISO Rivolta: A Riva For The Road

- You’ve heard the infamous origin story of Lamborghini, but what about another Italian sports car company that was birthed out of frustration with Enzo Ferrari? Renzo Rivolta decided to do something about his dissatisfaction with Ferrari cars, and so he built his own GT machine bearing his name: the Iso Rivolta.
Giugiaro designed the car whilst employed at Bertone, and though it may seem quintessentially Italian, it has some international elements in its DNA too-namely the 5.4-liter Chevrolet Corvette V8 under its elegant hood. Though Renzo Rivolta passed suddenly in 1966, not long after the first Rivoltas were built, his story is being retold and rediscovered by the next enthusiast generation thanks to owners like Helmut Boening and his immaculate example of Italy’s muscled elegance.

No matter how colorful and full of information new digital instrument screens become, needles pointing to numbers can't be beat.
cargogh Amen to that.
Digital is an annoyance, and it is not driver friendly. With traditional instruments you come to understand where dials should be pointing on all the gauges, so only a cursory glance is required to monitor them, and if something is off, you know it immediately. That is not the case with digital displays.... all you see are numbers... you have to actually read them and then think for a second what they imply. This is time wasting and tiring, and it takes your eyes off the road longer. I hate digital displays.
@@56squadron the only expection is the Lexus LFA
Beautiful car, reminds me somewhat of a BMW 3.0CSI, which is one of my favorite cars. So elegant, so refined, and with an engine note that belies the beast within.
GeSchmidtt that was my first thought also.
Though I these cars, and have read an article about the rivolta decades ago: that particular car was bought for less than 20k, original in good, 2- , conditions. Probably not to find these days anymore
Visually this is one of the most beautiful videos you guys have put out in a while. I love ISO Grifo and Rivolta and you did an AMAZING job capturing the car , the spirit and the owner. Touching stuff here. When Petrolicious gets it right, no one does it better. PERIOD
The mixture between the beautiful italian design and the brutality of the V8 Corvette, is simply amazing. I admire and at the same time feel a deep envy of those who can afford to search, find and buy the car they dreamed of as a child.
Unfassbar elegant.
The whole video is just pure art. "This car is not just sheet metal and materials like leather. This car has a soul, it's like a very, very close friend to me." But this line gives the chills.
Meine Heimatstadt Hamburg und ein perfektes Auto. Was will man mehr.
Holy shit, gave me goosebumps! Probably your most beautiful video to this day. A German gentleman driving an Italian beauty with an American heart. What's not to love!? :) Thank you for this gem, @petrolicious
Italian elegance with American muscle, what a great combination. A reliable Italian car, I LOVE it!
I had an Iso Rivolta..my daily driver in LA.
I love that this vid captures the spirit of the car, the dash lights at night.. the Zen of being one with the vehicle.
"Vacation on the road"
"The car has a soul"
Perfect words!
Danke für dieses Video voller Automotive Romantik.
Autos für die Seele 😍👍
herrliches Auto - herrlicher Film - herrliche Szenerie
vielen Dank!
I stop whatever im doing just to watch these pieces of art
The quality of the ISO Rivolta is just amazing, the bonnet and doors are closing with a silent but lovely perfect "click"
Iso is one thee car manufacters that more intrigred me. A manufacter that in 20 year of existence put in the world 5 models that are just breathtaking... four of them at least, but the other was a simbol, and a very important car.
My first time ever seeing this car, and now one of my all time faves. I have loved the Grifo for a while. But this car is such a special mash up of dream components and style. Even though I love a small liter 12 cylinder Italian, this is awesome with the US V8. What a sound. It is like an Italian mustang.
I'm in love with this channel...
das waren die richtigen Autos. 5400 ccm v8, 300 ps. Keine Notbeatmung, plastik u. downsized 4.0 v8 biturbo 600 ps & Co.
Ein echter Sauger V8. Traumhaft.
The car is sweet and soulful, but let me say this..Hamburg, what a city! Miss it so much, the quintessence of a port city drenched with industrial charm.
Tim's Enthusiast Garage's comment is perfect, so thank you. The ISO Grifo has always been my dream car, but I didn't realise until now that the ISO Rivolta is also my dream car. 2 dream cars? Why not! They are ISO's after all :)
"Void of any envy". Mein Freund, you are a bit naiive, although I get what you're trying to say. I deeply hope you'll keep that car forever. It's a real beauty that comes only rarely in life, if at all.
I told my wife: "It sure looks like an Italian sportscar... but doesn't sound like one" A SBC sounds like no other engine.
Another amazing video. Congrats
this is actually the most beautiful car ive seen
One of my favourite cars of all time! George Best had one - of course!
Enzo ferrari has made a lot of enemies in his lifetime I suppose :3
lets be thankfull ;-)
Asif Mahmud glad he did so!
Like many greats unfortunately...he was not a very nice guy!
Hamburg
ich konnts gar nicht glauben eben
Ja,Hamburg und Umgebung Richtung Wedel ,Hetlinger Schleuse.
unsere schönen deutschen Lande :)
Another beautifully filmed video, a joy to watch, at 5 mins perfectly edited. Wonderful cars, and owners, in every film too.
I've seen the Rivolta in person, it's gorgeous.
Im jealous
Great car, great owner. Brutal sound
Story telling is awesome
This is one of my favourite channel
never even knew this car existed what a fantastic piece of machinery
Iso, Monteverdi, Bizzarini and probably some I forget; I love the European stylish GT cars engined by American V8. All the styling, all the right engine noise and an engine one can still easily service after 50 years.
These engines were not stock. Stock they would melt down at sustained high speeds. When Bizzarini called GM to discuss solutions, they said - don't drive fast for a long time. He reworked the engines.
true.
How do you make a Yank tank V8 sound even better then it does in any American muscle car??? Put in a European car.
True but you can make American V8s last forever at sustained racing speeds though. Ford did it four years in a row back then and Corvette has won the GT class at LM idk how many times now. Tbh though, for me, the most exciting engine right now, is a Mercury Marine LS7 design 427 but with DOHC. Best of both worlds, 750 hp N/A, sold as a turn-key for $29,000 and marine stout so will last forever.
Surprised the hell out of me to learn this gorgeous car has a 327 SBC under the hood. The reality of affordable engine parts and arguably the best small block Chevy ever built makes me want an Iso so much more.
Gorgeous car.. would have liked to hear that V8 a bit more;-) Thanks again Petrolicious!
Immer wieder wunderschön...beautiful images and nice story, gotta love this channel
Another quality Petrolicious video. A slow walk-around of the car would have been nice as we never get a good view of the rear.
Why doesn't this brilliant channel have millions of subscribers?
Richard Magder because enthusiast of these cars (petrolicious cars) aren’t many...
Another superb video and some nice shots of Hamburg. Let's see that Iso Grifo in action, or maybe one of the Rivas!
Other marques have done the Italian styling/American power thing (i.e. Pantera of which I'm not really a fan) but nobody does it like Iso (possibly Bizzarrini?) I used to think I preferred the Iso Grifo over the Rivolta, but after this video I'm not so sure. I'm just glad to see that with the help of sites like Petrolicious, the Iso's seem to finally be getting the respect in America that they've always deserved.
Me - I'm a Gordon keeble man.
I love all Fuck You Enzo Ferrari marques. My favorite however is Monteverdi. Why because Peter Monteverdi was a importer of Ferraris for Switzerland. His machines like Renzo Rivoltas, and Giotto Bizzarinis came about to do one thing...Take Down the Horse. All of these man plus Ferruccio Lamborghini had a beef with Ole E Ferrari. Hell Ole Bizz worked for both Enzo and Ferruccio before telling them both to fuck off.
If by “respect” you mean hyperinflating auction prices, sure...
Let’s not forget Facel Vega. French not Italian, but still pairing fine European coach with reliable American power.
you gave me blue balls by not giving us a some more of that engine screaming.
Better off you went without, then......
@@michaelmeliambro5117 it was a cheavy motor, just to let you know... But let me guess, you love it know cause it's american right?
@@ale16_69 WRONG. I hate it bcuz it's an American engine in a NON-AMERICAN car!!!!
@@michaelmeliambro5117 so.. Amrican combo is the only good way of making a car?
@@ale16_69 You bet ur a** it is, u unenlightened prick....
A magnificent and rare car in the hands of an admiring owner! Very much done to Petrolicious standards!
Great video. Man this guy has some awesome tastes in cars and boats.
I don't undersand even a word, but I didn't turn on captions.... German is so beautiful language, in some way its real Petrolhead language... It goes so well with car passion...
Amazing
Soothing sounds of that motor.. :-J
Seems like a fact of life, get pissed off at Enzo to make much better cars.
This man has a really cool garage. In fact, everybody who's got a ISO in his garage has a extremely cool garage
No disrespect to this amazing machine, but where is this company now? Seems like Enzo was a bit more successful, lol
Rivolta died unexpectedly in 1966. His cars were popular, and his company would have doubtless had a different future if not for his passing.
Interesting! That would explain it. It's a shame he passed.
Like who, Lamborghini? ...All Brachetta and no Baccalà until they became German.
Beautiful! These videos are of the highest standards. "a vacation on wheels"? Yes! Wow.
Lovely looking car. I've heard of the Iso Rivolta, but I've never seen one in person.
This car sounds amazing.
Great. Now I need an Iso Rivolta too...
Amazing video and car!
The man has style
Nice car and nice video
40 % of Iso production was sold in Germany thought Becker import, if I remember well, lucky guys !😉👍
I admired those cars since I was a kid in the fifties. The company also produced the Isetta "bubble" car!
Beautiful car!
John Rivolta. Saturday Morning Fever.
jawoll endlich aus Deutschland 😁
sehr schön gedreht und unfassbar schönes auto .
An Iso Grifo, an Iso Rivolta, and a Riva? This guy knows how to motor tastefully.
What a beautiful car!
stunning video, after relatively long time. Nice car, but even much better camera, cuts and production
Crashed your drone just to get a cool shot? Respect.
Gorgeous car. I like the Grifo as well.
Stunning car.
Lovely story, I like your play room
Ten years earlier Renzo was building his first car which he successfully licensed to BMW: The Isetta
The Isetta saved the life of Bmw and allowed it ti rise again
Beautiful car, I'd love to see one
Fantastic.
I am always amazed when a German owns a classic Italian car.
you are easily amazed
With the best American Corvette V8 engine.
I would love petrolisious to do a video of this mans riva aqurama boat....please 😁
Sehr gut!... Von Amerika. 🇺🇸
Le belle Italiane purtroppo, finiscono all' estero.
2:45 Wow, just wow, awesome shot dude !
Enjoyed reading it...seemed like a nice car and a good presentation will have to watch it later sometime.
Worked my way through school into my 20's at UPS. Saturdays I would "Saturday Delivery" drive on Bainbridge Island. One of my frequent stops had his garage on the side of his house open- I looked at him and asked "Is that an Iso?" He responded with a quizzical look, "Yes, it's a Grifo, matches the Rivolta next to it." Sure a shit...
Lovely car! Always liked Iso s
I think petrolicious gona show some vintage boat now 😎😎😎
The greenhouse reminds me of a BMW 3.0😎
Agreed. The profile definitely looks like a late 60's / early 70's BMW.
That was my first thought, that it looked like an E9..E9's have no B-pilar though.
True!
Agree!
Do a video on the Riva Aquarama too!
I'm in love❤️
Thats the dream for sure. Vacation for life
Lots of Jaguar under the wheel arches. S-Type uprights and brakes, steering box and diff housing and half-shafts at the rear. Nice upgrades on brakes and steering therefore pretty easy. Many years since I played with one.
this guy has the coolest car
Great sounding and beautiful car. The name seems like something that would be in GTA but spelled like Revolta.
Moin-Moin aus Hamburg. Wahre Worte Helmut. Ich bin voll deiner Meinung!
And of course you need a Riva too.
An extremely refined well shaped fashinating car.
Iso also partecipated the F1 championship in the early 70s'; You have to watch the aged video in which the Iso F1 driver Arturo Merzario drives an Iso with his wife to partecipate to a prototype race racing with Alfa 33 commenting the adventure
How many times did you watch this episode..?
It took someone to realise for a great car..you need a reliable fantastic performing engine....Corvette V8..the worlds best engine.
WoW
Classy
Beautiful car, beautiful watch, beautiful boat! Beautiful wife?... No that would just be redundant!
Great video once again!
thanks for your compliment!
Helmut Böning You certainty deserve it sir!
Thank you George!
God bless you Helmut!
Thank you very much Caesar - all the best for you !
