    Me and my dad had a really rough relationship and one of the only things we bonded with was learning about cars while trying to fix this exact same car. We got it a year ago with about 118k miles on it. We didn't even know how to do oil changes or jack up a car back then. Now we have done head gasket changes, to air springs brakes and a lot of other little things. Then I just found out a tonight hours ago about the m62 timing chain being a matter of when not if in these cars. My car sounds exactly like this one did at the start of the series. Mine is probably due for a replacement too. I was in complete despair knowing this job was way above our skill level and we could never afford paying for that to be done. I was trying my hardest to not think about having to sell it, we love this car. After watching this I feel like if I rewatch these videos about a dozen times I might be able to do this job. So I can't express my gratitude enough for you! Thank you so much for this series. You have excellent camera work and 4k quality, clear instructions and a wealth of knowledge. Your channel is top quality. Thank you so much for doing youtube!

    You and this series saved my M62 E38! We had your videos on an iPad on top of the engine and went through the rebuild step by step, buying all the parts and tools you recommended here (btw, loved the jokes, commentary, and insights). I just completed the timing chains and guides. I used the German Auto Solutions tools and their online explanation. Your video was excellent! I watched it and used it as I moved through the process of removing and replacing the chains/guides/water pump. Speaking as a retired high school science teacher, you did an excellent job of shooting the video and explaining the process as you went. I also appreciated your calmness and lack of swearing. My 540i M-Sport has 170,000 miles and the guides were intact and not broken, but seemed brittle. The oil was changed on a regular basis at 3,000 miles and was serviced by one independent BMW shop from 25,000 miles. I sure this made a difference. Thanks again for an excellent tutorial! Look forward to checking out your other videos

    After installing a new timing chain tensioner, I believe you're supposed to pull the fuses for the fuel system and crank the engine for about 5-10 seconds to allow oil pressure to build, and until the oil pressure light goes out, that would have saved you all that horrible noise on the first start up :')

    • @mikegsg9r
      @mikegsg9r Год назад

      I didn't do this, but some people have there cam bolts and timing wheels come loose after doing this even after torquing to spec. I'm not sure how it helps, but I read priming the oil, puts pressure in the VANOS and prevents an impact like action when starting up and prevents the cam bolts from loosening. That would be a disaster.

    For those wondering about the fasteners on the bottom of the timing cover/upper oil pan you can loosen your motor mount nut on both motor mounts (the nut in center not the 2 e12 bolts) and jack the engine up to get more room if needed. Do not loosen all the way but do loosen them close as you can to the too right before they would come off. You should also remove the lower part of your steering shaft from your rack pinion. Lower steering shaft bolt is a e12 as well. After that put something soft on your jack like cardboard or old sham cloths and then carefully jack you engine up till the engine touches the top of the motor mount nuts at the very top. By doing this you will gain alot more room to work

    I am about to do that to my 2002 540i. Definitely buying the german solutions tools. I was going to skip timing it since the guides are barely breaking since they started to break and if I run the engine it is not skipping the teeth. Perhaps make tons of permanent markings. But after watching the videos I will go ahead and time it.

    One very useful tip I wanted to share is that you can install the main timing chain tensioner on the right upper timing case before you install the timing case to make things way easier. It's pretty simple to keep the tensioner compressed with your hand while you position the case in place.

  • @dumbcat
    @dumbcat 3 года назад +1

    just fyi. not a criticism. the engine sounded sketch at first because you forgot to prime the tensioner with oil (you can find the procedure on youtube). the tensioner had no oil in it. this may have caused minor damage to your brand new timing chain guides. the metal timing chain was not tensioned properly and was bashing around on the new plastic guides until the tensioner filled with oil and started doing its job

    • @runner3033
      @runner3033 3 года назад +1

      Yes, this is why the guides fail in the first place. Spring in tensioner gets weak, oil passages gather varnish etc. so with every start it takes a little longer to tension the chain properly. The guides get slapped by the chain while it pumps up; after some time as plastic gets brittle with age they are unable to deal with the repeated beatings and fall apart.

    3 questions after watching the full series:
    1. I read there is a trick to mash down the upper timing covers to be flush. Tighten down the valve covers without* gaskets temporarily. Then remove and replace with gaskets. Has anyone tried this trick?
    2. My e39 has a Thin rubber hose that runs along top of radiator from bleeder valve area. I don't see that on your video.
    3. Concerned about Order of fluids fills? Maybe pull fuel pump fuse to start circulating oil to critical areas and coolant and ps fluid around first before engine actually fires up? A few good long cranks with no fuel first, then actually start it? Ideas? Risk of trying to bleed coolant and ps and top up oil at same time? Agree?

    • @runner3033
      @runner3033 3 года назад

      Regarding #1: That trick did _not_ work for me, it leaked at that joint. Was also nervous about torquing down too hard on the covers, they are pot metal and quite brittle.
      I tried different ways to try and hold it down while tightening bolts, ended up calling a friend to push it down and hold it flush while I tightened the bolts, was well worth the beers. Also, make sure to put sealant in those corners - he did it on the lower cover but doesn't look like he did on the uppers. They will leak.

It cranks, runs fine for a few secs and then the DME7.2 shuts off the engine and it dies there are NO codes from this at all. @Kartanomaa Год назад +1

      @@burntnougat5341 I am about to replace at least the guides on my car. The oil separator will be replaced because it is very brittle. The thing I am most curious about is what should you really replace besides the guides and old tensioners since I am not sure the chains or the hardened metal sprockrts wear that much. There are several options and I am not sure any of cost effective option is good enough: 1st = just guides, 2nd guides and main chain, 3rd guides and all 3 chains/upper tensioners, 4th guides, all chains/upper tensioners and all the sprockets (3 sprockets). 5th all the former + vanos gears = costs very big buck. If you do the 4th option you still have "worn" vanos gears, which means your new chains and new sprockets will wear sooner. And I am not sure if the chain is much longer at this stage than the new one. Best would be all new components but those vanos gears are 500usd/piece so cost is pretty big at this point. I am wondering if just the guides and the new tensioners would sufficient and cost effective option besides the oil separation parts, since I see no point of replacing chains and part of sprockets because they will wear sooner because of old vanos gears.

I've had the same issue on two different cars, the alternator and the battery wires join at the starter and if it's loose - everything goes haywire. If that's not the issue - try disconnecting the oil quality sensor. It's on the same wire as the alternator, and if it's defective - it will mess with charging.

      @@gnomebmw that seems to be the hardest part of the job to me I think you can do it at the end when everything is in time and adjusted. I’m pretty sure there is a tensioner their it comes out of the red thing in the kit I think. Let me know how it goes I want to get a 540i and do this

      Its not hard. The hardest part about this is the Vanos and the lower timing cover removal and install. The crank bolt is a pain in the ass too. Other than that the timing really is not shit

    Hope nobody will need to take that crank bolt off ever lol
