    ZIP (in zip code) is an acronym for Zone Improvement Plan. However, the USPS intentionally chose the acronym to indicate that mail travels more quickly when senders mark the postal code on their packages and envelopes. Point Roberts residents are very patriotic towards the U.S. and love Canadian visitors, but don’t wish to be annexed to Canada. The community has had an awful time as Canada closed it’s borders during most of Covid thus driving through to get to the rest of the U.S. became impossible. Point Roberts has limited shopping, and Canada would not let them cross the border to shop either, and it was difficult to go by boat to the Washington state mainland due to weather and limited ferry service. The place almost became a ghost town. Only recently have the borders been opened partially to let residents go back and forth, but it is still difficult to cross more than one border at this point in time, though rumor has it that will be changing soon.

    There is also something called zip+four...you use your five digit zipcode plus an additional four numbers which are specific to each address in the country. That allows automated mail sorting to sort mail and packages more precisely for mail carrier routes. The plus 4 digits are optional and most people do not use it although businesses and government agencies often do when they do mailings.

    What qualify as an river is that water that flow in an channel from one point to another ,

  • @adriennegormley9358
    @adriennegormley9358 Год назад

    River qualification from what I recall from my geography studies in university, it has to carry a certain minimum amount if water for a certain period of time. This applied to dry gulches and wadis, which even though they only have running water for a short period of time, still carry enough water from the source.
    The Mississipi drainage basin covers a good half, maybe more, of the 48 contiguous states. Its bounded by the Rockies on the west and Appalachians on the east. Two of its more prominent tributaries are also navigable:
    1. Ohio River to Pittsburhg PA
    2. Missouri to Great Falks MT where the Missouri leaves the mountains for the plains.
    I knew the last intellectually, as I grew upin Montana near the Missouri headwaters, but I never thought much about it until one year I drove from the west coast to Winnipeg Manitoba, and as I crossed North Dakota on I-94 passing through that state's capital city, I saw a sign beside the freeway that said, "Port of Bismarck next exit."

  • @jonadabtheunsightly
    @jonadabtheunsightly 2 года назад

    In America, one five-digit zipcode corresponds to one post office. Small cities (up to about 20k people) generally only have one zipcode (and thus one main post office; small branch offices, e.g., a post office at a tourist-oriented location like Niagara Falls, where you can buy postcards and mail them, doesn't count here, unless it also has charge of routes to deliver mail to the surrounding addresses). Large cities, of course, have more than one.
    Now, the extended zipcode (zip+4) is made up of the five-digit zipcode corresponding to the post office, plus four additional digits that are generally a "route number". One route is the list of addresses (potentially) visited by one mail carrier each mail-delivery day, and a single post office (and thus a single five-digit zipcode) can have up to ten thousand distinct routes, though in practice I don't think most of them have anywhere near that many.
    The system will break down, and digits will need to be added somewhere (or else we could start using letters as some of the digits), if the population grows to the point where the number of delivery routes gets into the hundreds of billions, possibly even if it gets into the tens of billions, because the distribution of routes over post offices is nowhere near even.

    Can't remember the actusl qualifying volume, but i do remember from my geography courses that to qualify as a river, the water course has to carry a specific volume of water annually. This qualifies some desert arroyos and wadis in desert areas to qualify as rivers, because even though they may be dry a good part of the year, when they do getcseasonal rains and/ or flash floods, they can and do carry enough water to qualify as rivers.

    Point Roberts is part of the US simply because when the border was being negotiated, they chose the 49th parallel westward to the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Point Roberts dips just south of that line. There are a few other places like that along the border due to lakes that cross the border in multiple locations, but most are tiny and don't (as far as I know) have anyone living there. The only other really big ones are the Northwest Angle in Minnesota (where the border was defined at "the northwesternmost point of Lake of the Woods" then due south to the 49th) and the Alburgh Tongue in Vermont (between two forks of Lake Champlain, both of which stretch north of the 45th; however, this one is accessible by road via bridges across the lake, so it isn't really cut off like the other two). Canada has a couple as well - Akwesasne, Quebec is just west of the confluence of the St. Regis and St. Lawrence rivers and just east of the point where the St. Lawrence crosses the 45th (and the border shifts to the 45th), and Campobello Island (part of New Brunswick) is only connected by a bridge to Maine, not to any other part of Canada.

    There is a second small slice of America which is cut off from the otherwise contiguous United States - the Northwest Angle of Minnesota is also an exclave (I believe that's the correct word).
    The exclave of Washington State has an interesting piece of history. During Prohibition, it was not legal to purchase, make, or sell liquor - but it was legal to possess it and drink it. A bar existed at the time which straddled the American/Canadian border. The liquor could be sold and served on the Canadian side of the building, at which point, patrons could walk across the room and drink in America.

    If you took Alaska and put it to scale, it would actually touch both the East and West coasts at the same time. It’s about 3 times the size of Texas.

    In fact, if everyone on earth stood shoulder to shoulder then front to back. They could all fit in one medium sized county in Texas. They would all have to be very friendly, but it is mathematically possible. 8:56 As the video says 'Technically' this isn't correct. No one measures elevation this way. The structure of Everest can (probably does) go several thousands of feet below sea level also. 11:06 There is a plaque on the ground at 4 Corners. No need to jump around. Stand in the center of the plaque & you are in all 4 at the same time.

      @@evarocastor7230 The structure of Everest goes far below ground. It is a part of two plate structures that is crashing together. That is why they really don't measure below sea level.

    The US not only has an ocean on both the East & West coasts, but there's also the Gulf of Mexico along the Southeast border, & the Great Lakes region almost due north of that, which is kind of a failed ocean.

    Land Prices in California - like anywhere else are all about location.
    There are plenty of places in California where land and houses are not outrageously expensive.
    But of course, they are not prime beachfront property, or a short public transit ride to a high paying job.

    There's debate here in the US about what counts as "visiting" a state. Most Americans can tell you how many states they've been in. Some people think you only get to count states you stayed overnight in and others say all you have to do is cross over the border for it to count, so they'll plan routes to get briefly into another state to pad their numbers. Oh, and there's debate as to whether or not you're allowed to count states where you only had a lay over for a flight and didn't leave the airport. Americans are weird sometimes. You can buy US maps that have peel off decals for each state and put a pic of you visiting that state in its place.

    Arkansas only has 6 bordering states, but there are spots you can travel SOUTH from Arksbsas to every one of them. For some of them it's the irregular non straight line borders, but for Missouri it's hilarious. That little southeast nubbin of Missouri's western border is not a straight north south line. Check out a map and you'll see what I mean.
    Learned this from a good friend who lived in Arkansas

    Regular USA drivers enter BC CANADA and travel TWO + plus long days to enter Alaska USA and then some return in the fall. B.C. is more than TWICE the size of TEXAS. California, Oregon and Washington together is smaller than BC. Texas has 6X more firearm homicides every year than all of CANADA. Many States have the same HIGH death rate. CANADA has universal health services to all, and live longer, and better quality of life.

    1) We're the only *inland* peninsula.
    2) The Great Lakes holds more than 20% of the entire earth's fresh water.
    3) Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area
    4) Lake Michigan’s shore is home to the largest freshwater sand dunes in the world.
    5) The Great Lakes are the largest freshwater system in the world.
    There's more tidbits, but you can see for yourself. Just type Great Lakes facts in a search engine.
