Happy birthday to You!!!
Hiya, just subscribed! Love your channel! I admit I was harsh and very critical of classical music being into the grunge era listening to nirvana and Alice in chains ect.ect. I even thought classical music stunk,,. but as I grew older age 35 now I have a great appreciation of classical, it started out when I was flipping thru the channels of board out of my mind with music thinking "music isn't what it use to be anymore" then I bumped into a radio station that plays classical and I gotta admit I was hooked, my favorite classical musician is Chopin, I bought a cd of all the nocturnes and preludes chopin played, I love it and of course your channel :)
It's funny how that happens! My taste in music is always changing and evolving too. Chopin is amazing of course, glad you discovered an appreciation for him. :)
The nocturne is beautiful also my favorite at the moment

+keybladesrus Thanks for the nice comment. :) I had a really hard time deciding on what Ballade to pick - they're all so good!
awesome!! beautiful channel!
Glad the Heroic Polonaise made the cut. I'd have personally placed the 17th prelude somewhere in here too. Such a beautiful piece of music!
Love your sessions. Lots of good info delivered with zest and humour. I presume you are a pianist yourself, if so, let's hear you play.
I appreciate the reference to the Belgian revolution which happened in 1830, right before and during the composition of Chopin's fourth ballade. Also right before his arrival in Paris
My favorite Etude is probably Winter's Wind or the Waterfall Etude.
Amanda M I'm extremely drawn to the Ocean Etude as well because of how he can make broken arpeggios so intense
Dawson I hate the ocean Etude tbh
wrong notes
How can you "hate" the ocean etude? It is beyond belief.
Frédéric François Chopin
Ocean etude is hard to play, that’s why I hate it
But I love to listen
Not only do you talk about my favorite composers, but you're also drop dead gorgeous! Really enjoy the videos on Chopin!

My favourites would have to be op 27 no 1, followed by no 2. I find them to be of peculiar beauty, sounding like something not of this world. Also cello Sonata in G minor, probably my favourite cello piece.Cheers and thanks for the awesome videos :)
The fourth ballade is my favorite, too.
A favourite of mine is from his 24 Preludes. No.15 in D-Flat Major, to be precise. I love that it starts out so light and pleasant, then hits you with those bass notes that he introduces at about a minute and a half in. It's such a simple piece, but so powerful. I also find it hilarious that it's been subtitled both "Raindrop" and "But Death is here, in the shadows".
+Trevor May The Preludes are great, it was tough not including them (perhaps I should have). I had no idea of the alternate title of Raindrop, but it's so fitting - actually it would be fitting to most of Chopin's pieces I think. :)
+Allysia K I'll admit to not knowing until I googled it! I also had no idea that Chopin didn't name any of them himself.
+Trevor May Ha ha! That last bit I did know - he was pretty against it for the most part. But mere mortals like me enjoy having nicknames to remember pieces by, instead of just memorizing a bunch of opus numbers. :)
I am sure I will be correct if I am incorrect but my simple understanding of the given name Raindrops is because Chopin composed this prelude while he, sands and her daughter were staying at the monastery in valldemossa maljorca. I can not be 100% certain but I seem to recall my piano professor (who was lucky enough to be four away in the teaching line from Chopin) recanting that Chopin had been arguing with sands over her daughter and was in bed awake in one of the small monastic rooms when it began to rain on the terracotta roof tiles. Soon the raindrops escalated into a thunderstorm. So this prelude “raindrops” was born. Even if not correct I still love the story and will always have this in mind if asked to play this prelude.
Hope this may help in some small way when interpreting this small work.
firstly, happy belated bd young lady. now this may seem an odd thing to say, but i've just recently developed an appreciation for this kind of music. maybe its got something to do with my getting older and appreciating the simple things in life, then losing them, like friends, family, the list goes on and on. a question, do you think it possible for a 58 year old such as myself, who has never played piano before, to learn to play a single Chopin piece? my 2 favorites are the Minute Waltz and nocturne opus 9 no.2. id like to be able to surprise a couple people.
Revolutionary Etude, One Minute Waltz, Nocturne in C# Minor,op. Posthmous(another ), Fantasie-Impromptu, Polonaise in A Major opus 40 no.1

My favorites:
Sonata in B minor Op.58
Nocturne Op 62 no 1
Andante Spianato and Grande Polonaise Brilliante Op.22
Etude Op 25 no 5 - "Wrong notes"
Mazurka Op.33 no 4
FYI Lhawga. You may very well be correct in pointing out the “Wrong notes” for Etude Op25 No5 however may I humbly bring to ones attention that often the German Edition may differ from the French or English. This is why in my opinion it is most important to use an Urtext Edition or better yet an edition edited by paderewski, which is used within the Chopin Academy. If one takes the Waltzes you will notice vast difference between the editions. Chopin himself often performed his own works slightly differently. Of course if the wrong notes produce a harmonic “misspelling” then alas a wrong note has sadly been introduced. One may also hope that the overall architecture, style, performance, feeling, passion etc is what we all wish to focus on and not if a naughty wrong note slips in.
Easily my favorite
Excellent last choice. The Ballade in F minor is my favourite piece written for the piano. Definitely agree on the extreme difficulty. Some parts of it like the coda I find harder than when I learned Liszt's Mephisto Waltz. Most challenging piece I've ever attempted. I think it's an essential for any concert pianist :).
Kudos to you for learning it! And the Mephisto Waltz, those are both big, epic pieces.
Thank you. Have you had the chance to learn any of the ballades or scherzi? They're all amazing. I'd love to learn his complete works like Ashkenazy did.
It'd be really cool if you could do a life and times video on Liszt or a top 6 video :). My teacher's husband Dr. Alan Walker is a great source for information. He has a 3 book series on Liszt.
polonaise fantasie, nocturne opus 37 no 2, ballade no 1, etude opus 10 no 1, waltz opus 70 no 2, and his first published piano concerto for me :)

My favs are:
1. Heroic Polonaise
2. Nocturne op9
3. Etude OP. 25 "wrong Note"

Could you possibly do a tutorial type song for the nocturne op 9 no. 1 or mazurka 68 no. 2 or a walk through through the most difficult parts of these pieces? That would be awesome :D
