Malus had a perfect view of every beam of light. He knew you were coming. He wanted vengeance for his lost brethren. He dreaded the day you would come. He didn't want to die. The music captures every emotion, and when you hear it, you know who the real monster was.
Or maybe it was to make the player question why he should slay all these colossi and if they served a more sacred and vital role than a typical video game boss. We do know that they served to seal Dormin away but the music also makes you question the colossi themselves and if they weren't just some giant savage creature. How do we know if these creatures are misunderstood and that those you were slaying were innocent, compassionate titans who only wished to be left to their own devices? What if, like you said before, they felt pain whenever their brothers fell dead? What if the protagonist is causing more evil to roam the world and the Colossi are the reluctant guardians who want peace to reign at all costs?
Finally, the last colossus... The ritual is nearly over... Thy wish is nearly granted... But someone now stands to get in thy way... Make haste, for time is short...
I really love the final boss as a whole because by the time you get to Malus, you wonder if killing all the colossi was really worth it... but there's no turning back and not even Agro can help you now. Such a beautiful game
I love the weather in this fight. The rain can be seen as tears representing sorrow and loss especially after Wander loses Agro. The strong howling wind represents anger, determination and frustration within Wander at this point. Just a thought though.
So, I have a theory about Malus' fight. Wander wasn't supposed to be fighting Malus one-on-one. The barricades in Malus' arena are facing away from him, meaning there were probably supposed to be men behind them that were helping to defend Malus. Going off of the idea that all of the Colossus' lights are used as a kind of distress beacon to show that somebody is trying to release Dormin, I don't think it's too farfetched that Emon might have been trying to rush to Malus to defend him. His men have crossbows after all- they could have fired them right through the slits in the barricades. I suppose there's the point that only somebody with the ancient sword could get through the seal to get to Malus, but maybe there was some kind of secret passage up to Malus that only the shamans knew of. I'm just spit-balling here!
its all theories...and besides, for a colossi forever stuck with no purpose, who cant even move from his spot...he sure seems to continue that...lame existence
man it´s so cool to see that people are still talking about different ways how to interpret this game, because it just leaves so much space for the own imagination :D really a masterpiece, my personal favourite game of all time
Kasperi01 It's about a man who is driven to such sadness by the death of the woman he loves that he steals a sword and travels to a forbidden land to try and revive her. Only to resurrect "evil" old God and be killed by his own people. He puts himself through Hell to save her, and he does, but ultimately dies thinking that he failed. That last playable part where he desperately tries to reach Mono before he's sucked into the vortex is one of the bleakest scenes I've ever seen. How is that not absolutely heartbreaking? And that was just the base plot, there's a lot of other stuff that's grim about it.
Kasperi01 Just because something is fiction doesn't mean it can't be depressing. I wouldn't be so quick to write something off just because it's a game, or film, or book.
+A Disappointed Horse That's why it is so often hailed as one of the prime examples of games as an art form. it conveys it's "payload" through the whole of the gaming experience, and none of it feels out of place. You come out of it emotionally drained, if you were truly engaged on it.
Wander - a man who became obsessed by the one human emotion that drives us all into madness and heartache. nothing would stop him, this emotion drove him onwards, the one emotion that cost him everything. it was Love. Love consumed him, Love made him vanquish the colossi and it was Love that turned Wander against his own mind. Love is a psychopath and Wander became its puppet. there are many theories regarding Wander's actions, this was mine. Amazing Game, Amazing Soundtrack, Amazing Story.
I honestly prefer the idea that he was Mono's killer. It makes for an interesting notion of trying to atone for his guilt, and then racking up more guilt and pain throughout the game by slaying the colossi. It's a vicious cycle of guilt and suffering in a desperate attempt at atonement. The path to hell is paved with good intentions, after all.
Ramon Ariles It was indeed, but they should add some more dificulty while climbing him, once you climb him you won, thing that didnt happen in other colossi
Yeah ikr, malus was the most easiest colossi to kill in the game, cuz he couldn't move, i can't imagined how beast malus would be if he wasn't trapped in that tower though.
+Alan Pereyra Kinda the point though isn't it? He isn't TRYING to fight you. He's trying to keep you AWAY from him. He may have immense power.... but he's still just trying to be left alone.
Dormin is Nimrod spelled backward, Nimrod was this ancient king that had commited an unforgivable act and had all parts his body cut off and sealed. Dormin is this supposed entity that was sealed off into 16 different collusi. The place was deemed as "forbidden" because in legend if that king had brought back the pieces of his body, he would be released and would bring terror the world. - Mono was brought back to life as a happy ending stated by the creators, and as a connection to ICO.
I felt like such a badass when I bought these guys down in the heat of the moment, but whenever I look back at it over my shoulder, I feel like an ass without the bad.
This is the final colossus standing in your way, Lord Emon and his team are on their way to stop you from resurrecting Mono, your dead girlfriend, your horse and only companion in your quest to resurrect Mono is believed to be dead, and you've suffered so much to get to this point. This music symbolizes the final act of the forbidden ritual, and the most epic final boss fight in any game I've ever played.
Dormin isn't entirely evil. You people need to start paying attention to phrasing. He said he borrowed this warrior's body. That's hardly an insult or shows sign of dis-respect to the lead character. If anything it seems like he's misunderstood, and does have a vendetta.
BrickMan00000! Yeah, but the question was still obvious what he'd do to the rest of the world now that he was revived. And judging from the Chief and his warriors, it was NOT a good thing.
But the Emon (the chief) was against dorimin, probably because emon was part of a different religion and believed dorimin to be "poisoning" the minds of his followers, dorimin was likely just a god the people worshiped, i doubt he would do anything bad.
When you hear this music, you can help but feel rather melancholy and full of remorse. You killed these magnificent, breathtaking creatures, each with a concious of their own, who were left in a distant land lost to time for the purpose of preventing a horrid evil from escaping into the world. When you kill them, you cant help but feel sad because these amazing colossi will never again walk the Earth. Saddest part: most could do little to defend themselves, being trapped in caves all their lives
All Wander ever thought about was saving the woman he loved the most. He never thought or cared about the consequences of killing the colossal guardians that held Dormin in place, never worried about stealing the ancient sword...or noticed the way his skin paled and horns grew from his skull. Even when he was injured and defeated, he still reached for her.
This song makes me think of my past mistakes in my life... And regret the days those mistakes happened... It's just so... Saddening to me... Honestly, I almost CRIED listening to this...
If you really want to get deep about this game's arguable plot, you could even say that Dormin wasn't really evil. Perhaps he was the object of an older religion that was rejected when something new took its place. Dormin was true to his word and revived Mono. Also, he used the term "borrowed" when he possessed Wander. Maybe he just wanted revenge against those who betrayed him and ended up screwing over Wander when he ended up failing to kill Lord Emon and his soldiers.
That's exactly how I felt at the end. You start the game thinking you are a brave hero, but you slowly realize how horrifying selfish Wander has been, like a kid who can't stand not getting things his way.
@ex1lepr0 Because each colossus contained a fragment of Dormin's power. Their sole purpose for existing was to contain his power. They lived off of it. In a sense, the colossi WERE Dormin, or pieces of him.
We may never know. The final scenes where you see all the dead colossi are a clear hint that even if Dormin himself wasn't evil, what he asked you to do certainly wasn't good either. 16 dead colossi. You killed them. 16 lives in exchange for one.

Malus is the biggest thing I have ever seen in a video game. Just the sight of him looming over you is intimidating and awe-inspiring. He gives off this omnipotent feeling that makes you feel so small and insignificant. Shadow of The Colussus isn't a game. The title of video-game does it no justice. It tells a story in the most magnificent way ever. It is the most moving and imaginative game I have ever played, before or since. It is by far the greatest game I have played, ever.
thx again....this is my favorite song in the game..is very powerful & depressive..when i 1st fight that last colossus..it made me very sad that song..cs it show how desperated the main char wander..had to be fighting that giant apocalipse all by himself,in the most dark moments of all..this game is a sacred game like no many..it has everything,..this song it is very deep, also scary in a way..is like gregorian-Goth..thx for upload this long version is in my favorite liSt...thank you itrulyvalued
Well, even tough the colossi are in some way "peaceful", it's not like he asked Wander to murder innocent creatures, his real intention was to ask Wander to bring his 16 pieces together, in the end, he killed no one, he just freed them from their stone case... against their partial will, as they seem to have separate concience. But that seems to be because the seal also drives them crazy and aggressive in some way, maybe because the seal makes them want to prevent Dormin's revival too.
This is art. There will be a buzzer. When you hear the buzzer, stare at the art. If you feel that this art has not provided you adequate intellectual sustenance, reflect briefly on this ominous music.
I love the fact that Malus hands shakes everytime he fires, not because he's releasing HUGE ammounts of concentrated energy, but because he struggles to kill Wander, he oversees all of the Forbidden Land, he's in fear, fear because he seen what Wander's capable of, and because he already knew he was going to die that night...
Funny enough, bladske all but quoted the director for the plot. Each of the colossi were placed there so NOT to harm anyone, and each acted as part of a living seal for Dormun. We know for certain that unless you entered the forbidden lands (where the Colossi & temple was) they never harmed you.
This game teaches you how to fight for you dreams and your will, but also when to stop(when like Wander, you are putting someone else in great danger for reaching your dream) I feel sorry about Wander, but for me, he is a hero, only because the great effort and valor he shows to all of us.
when some game wanna get respect from me... shadow of the colossus is one of them and one of many good thing from this game i have to give respect is Demise of the Ritual
He ended the lives of 16 ancient, sacred beings, that never harmed anyone and all held a piece of an ancient evil contained in them. Wander's motive was an endless love but the acts committed in the name of that love were beyond atrocious. The slow realization of that through the music and details in this game is masterful. Only when Malus finally stands before you, do you fully realize what terrible things you've being doing in the name of love.
the music is so beautiful in this game I swear. yeah not the best controls but this music combined with the graphics of the ps4 , its practically godly!
you have a point..but is also very heroic wat wander did to revive the woman he did love..is not just selfishnes..is also alot of selfless action on his part..to defy wat most ppl will run away from..i will had do the same for the one i love the most even if i have to die..that is why i love this game..is a true romantic & epic story..still i see your point
I agree with Arch Angel. Phalanx doesn't really even attack you at any point, and Avion only after you try to kill him first shooting him with an arrow.
while listening to this song i was looking at ancient civilizations......sumerians,babylonians,assyrians,egyptians,Israelites,romans,greeks......so on and so forth......just so sad thinking about how our society will end up collapsing like theres someday. oh well life goes on.
And you sir are the one who captures the power behind this game. It exposes the selfishness of even our purest motives, it highlights the sin in beauty, and the human propensity to annihilate what sacredness remains through our avarice and pride. Wander is ambition, Agro is motivation, the colossi are all that stand in their way; lust greed angst fear depression, and in the last the defiance f these natural impediments leads only to ruination of all things associate. SotC is literature.
Everytime I got killed by Malus trying to get close to him,I can swear to all of you I tried so hard while I was thinking (come on, I can't give up now). But like all of you are saying,Wander actions describes the selfishnes, but we always were thinking "he's doing this to revive his love. Now everytime I see a colossi falling dead,it's like a part of me falling with them, because Wander WAS advised, and he keep his will till the end.I can't forget how even in colossi form he tries to reach his girl.
First time I saw this guy, Filled with rage I draw my sword and fucking charged the bastard, blinded by anger and consumed by despair over my fucking horse.
To be fair, he had no idea of the colossi's placement furthermore their intent, its like comparing this to MacBeth when MacBeth is fully aware of the actions he committed were beyond wrong but continues them, Wander simply thinks the colossi are malicious creatures, you cannot say this game exposes the selfishness of our purest motives if Wander had no idea of the evil intent behind it. But it is still literature I just don't believe Wander is to blame at all or to chastise him with words. ^_^
Like i said its up in the air who knows but the creators but either of us could be right or wrong we'll never know.. You make amazing points i wouldn't think id see on a gaming vid. But i was just sharing what i saw.
To answer ragna alicords question from before what I's pelagia? Well it's a giant crawfish cuz it has erected eyes, a carapace, arachnoid like jointed legs, a soft under belly, & sensitive facial plates. Just like a crawfish!
But you also have to bear in mind that an "unforgivable act" is completely subjective. Dormin might only be labeled as "evil" by this group based on their own potentially twisted beliefs. Remember, it is assumed that it is this same religious group that sealed him in the first place, and will have sacrificed hundreds of horned boys in the future (Ico included) based on nothing but superstition. Maybe Dormin just has a vendetta. Also it was lord Emon's spell that ultimately doomed Wander.
D; when i am a kid with my ps2 playing this imagine a convwersation with the giant D; so epic in my head i dream about this battle 2 days ago i am here again with my old friend
I would assume to save Wander's love. Who, despite being dead or near death, holds a meaningful connection to Wander. *warning, overly poetic rant incoming* The fear of death holds power over us all wether we know it or not, and seeing it in a loved one only cements it in reality. To the point where it chills us and there is nowhere we will not go to try and escape it. And as guilt and pain slowly fills Wander, it also slowly begains to fill the player as they continue to climb giants.
@ex1lepr0 Didn't you play the game? When one of the colossi was killed, black tentacles emerged and burrowed themselves into Wander. Those tentacles were the fragments of Dormin's power. Killing the colossi released those fragments. That was why Dormin couldn't fulfill Wander's desire before the ritual. He simply couldn't do it and either way he used Wander.
So basically the underlying message of the story is: "The road to Hell is paved with the purest intentions." Good to know. At least there is a (somewhat) happy ending.
I enjoy such intelligent conversation, doesn't happen as much as I'd like. My view on this is that, whatever the case may be, Dormin was very, very powerful. Capable of extremely destructive things, no doubt.
Yeah, and only to free Dromin from his trap, let him take your body (even tho he warned you), let you die, and make the girl live all by herself in a land which she cannot escape. Then she has to take care of a baby with horns all by herself. The beings were a part of Dormin, and were spread out to the forbiden land by Lord Emon. Its funny, since long before Dormin being traped he was worshiped and all, but then was deemed evil just because of the horns. The story of this game is breath taking.
Malus had a perfect view of every beam of light. He knew you were coming. He wanted vengeance for his lost brethren. He dreaded the day you would come. He didn't want to die. The music captures every emotion, and when you hear it, you know who the real monster was.
I just think this song was about vengeance for Agro.
Wolfgang Anza I take that back,he might feel killing Wander might be the perfect vengeance .
Petar Stojkoski ehehehehehe
I always kind of thought of Malus as pure evil, for some reason.
I guess it is right there in the name... (Latin: "The Bad")
Finally, the last colossus...
The ritual is nearly over...
Thy wish is nearly granted...
But someone now stands to get in thy way...
Make haste, for time is short...
gogeta jaguar eh nice quote
I really love the final boss as a whole because by the time you get to Malus, you wonder if killing all the colossi was really worth it... but there's no turning back and not even Agro can help you now. Such a beautiful game
Agro never helps really...
Only a few Colossus he helps.
I love the weather in this fight. The rain can be seen as tears representing sorrow and loss especially after Wander loses Agro. The strong howling wind represents anger, determination and frustration within Wander at this point. Just a thought though.
This was one of the most emotionally impacting boss fights of my gaming experiences to date....
Yes it was. Your companion just died. thats why this type of music was playing during the LAST collosi
After Agro fell off the bridge I wanted to stop playing and then this music started playing...so many feels
Parasol i remember i was a baby when i watched my dad play, and when i saw agro die i started crying because my dad would play sotc everyday.
Me too pal. Me too. 😢
I wasn't really sad because the little asshole always ran away and got me killed.
@@Broncos8818 yeah, doesnt help alot.
the horror of when you face this boss the first time, it took me ages, and the electric fireball things are so OP.
Yeah, if you get hit once, you're in deep trouble. Cost me a few Speed Runs on Hard Mode
Perhaps when the seal was made, People where stuck on the other side to defend the colossi, but over time they died out, and turned to dust
The barricades are only ideas from the game designer.
Only that, there´s no sense on people defending a colossi, also you need the shine of the ancient sword to open the door of malus.
But, who's to say Malus wouldn't just kill Emons men? The Colossi are not his allies, Im not even sure if Emon created them intentionally.
its all theories...and besides, for a colossi forever stuck with no purpose, who cant even move from his spot...he sure seems to continue that...lame existence
man it´s so cool to see that people are still talking about different ways how to interpret this game, because it just leaves so much space for the own imagination :D really a masterpiece, my personal favourite game of all time

I always loved how the final colossus' square on the map was F-8, "fate"
I NEVER NOTICED THAT
I didn't notice the 8, but I did notice the F. I thought there the joke/message was "you're fucked." But the F-8 = Fate thing is way better. Good eye.

Everyone thinks killing Malus isn't worth it. Until realizing once a colossus dies, it returns to Dormin's body.
how does that make it worth it...?

I love the fact that Malus hands shakes everytime he fires, not because he's releasing HUGE ammounts of concentrated energy, but because he struggles to kill Wander, he oversees all of the Forbidden Land, he's in fear, fear because he seen what Wander's capable of, and because he already knew he was going to die that night...
omg
I was thrilled
Thank you for saying that. I realize now that a lot of the emotions this game promoted was through the amazing music.
It sends chills down my spine...... Its FANTASTIC!!!!
Funny enough, bladske all but quoted the director for the plot. Each of the colossi were placed there so NOT to harm anyone, and each acted as part of a living seal for Dormun. We know for certain that unless you entered the forbidden lands (where the Colossi & temple was) they never harmed you.
I love this soundtrack so much
Heroes are made in the hour of defeat. Success is, therefore, well described as a series of glorious defeats.
This fits the overall theme of this game perfectly
This game teaches you how to fight for you dreams and your will, but also when to stop(when like Wander, you are putting someone else in great danger for reaching your dream) I feel sorry about Wander, but for me, he is a hero, only because the great effort and valor he shows to all of us.
when some game wanna get respect from me...
shadow of the colossus is one of them
and one of many good thing from this game i have to give respect is Demise of the Ritual
Wander is wonder!
Nostalgia
He ended the lives of 16 ancient, sacred beings, that never harmed anyone and all held a piece of an ancient evil contained in them. Wander's motive was an endless love but the acts committed in the name of that love were beyond atrocious. The slow realization of that through the music and details in this game is masterful. Only when Malus finally stands before you, do you fully realize what terrible things you've being doing in the name of love.
the music is so beautiful in this game I swear. yeah not the best controls but this music combined with the graphics of the ps4 , its practically godly!
You really have to wonder: Were Wander's actions heroic or selfish?
Ahh, yes... Demise of the Ritual, one of the most beautiful video game themes I've ever heard.
The Final colossus standing at the end of the world. I love this game.
how can anyone dislike this?
The saddest part was the credits. As it showed each slain colossi reverting back into the soil that they were made from...
you have a point..but is also very heroic wat wander did to revive the woman he did love..is not just selfishnes..is also alot of selfless action on his part..to defy wat most ppl will run away from..i will had do the same for the one i love the most even if i have to die..that is why i love this game..is a true romantic & epic story..still i see your point
This theme say you "you are going to fight your last obstacle, something like a god. Good luck"
I agree with Arch Angel. Phalanx doesn't really even attack you at any point, and Avion only after you try to kill him first shooting him with an arrow.
Such an epic game either way. Truly a work of art.
while listening to this song i was looking at ancient civilizations......sumerians,babylonians,assyrians,egyptians,Israelites,romans,greeks......so on and so forth......just so sad thinking about how our society will end up collapsing like theres someday. oh well life goes on.
when i first faced this boss, i spent a good five minutes thinking "hmmmm, think this is going to be alittle tougher than the others"
this give me chills
Whos hearing this in 2015 cause I am :D
I am. This song is great, it touches your soul.
I am too
I just beat this game today, actually.
Brian Manley Jr. So did you fall from Malus' head like a hundred times?
+Ramon Ariles Don't remind me... I'm honestly surprised that I survived falling that distance.
The only song you'll ever want to play when you know you're about to die.
fucking brilliant game and music
And you sir are the one who captures the power behind this game. It exposes the selfishness of even our purest motives, it highlights the sin in beauty, and the human propensity to annihilate what sacredness remains through our avarice and pride. Wander is ambition, Agro is motivation, the colossi are all that stand in their way; lust greed angst fear depression, and in the last the defiance f these natural impediments leads only to ruination of all things associate. SotC is literature.
That... That was beautiful...
This sound it's amazing
I LOVE THIS GAME MORE THAN THE REST OF MY FAMILY!
+The Haruno one one of them says to be m'mom, is that like a japanese food or smth?
+Austin Pham Didn't know what a dog is till mine died, I think dying is like sleeping but harder...
Guys are are those things you are talking about? So weird and not from this world.
Austin Pham what is is this?
The Haruno one you gotta train your grammar bro
first Agro, then starts this music and those fireballs.... daaaaamn!!
that son of a bitch was a real colloso
*peeps out of building*
"Hello colossus! ^^"
*fires at you*
"SHIIIIITTT!!!"
First time I saw this guy, Filled with rage I draw my sword and fucking charged the bastard, blinded by anger and consumed by despair over my fucking horse.
not to mention the wind blowing against you and the light beam thing of the 15 colossus you defeated behind you lol
Such a powerful song...
The last and strongest Colossus out of the remaing lot. Nice.
I feel like this game would have been the most amazing game ever for modding
Like i said its up in the air who knows but the creators but either of us could be right or wrong we'll never know.. You make amazing points i wouldn't think id see on a gaming vid. But i was just sharing what i saw.
1:22 - 1:40 sounds so sad
this music is really good.
Homework : the real colossi we have to kill
Imagine if killing different colossi were are homework assignments.
Wolfgang Anza 10 times more motivated to finish them
tears were dropping, while hearing this music.. i thought the horse died a while ago.
Also it was lord Emon's spell that ultimately doomed Wander.
owo this soundtrack is great! :D
D; when i am a kid with my ps2 playing this imagine a convwersation with the giant D; so epic in my head i dream about this battle 2 days ago i am here again with my old friend
I would assume to save Wander's love. Who, despite being dead or near death, holds a meaningful connection to Wander.
*warning, overly poetic rant incoming*
The fear of death holds power over us all wether we know it or not, and seeing it in a loved one only cements it in reality. To the point where it chills us and there is nowhere we will not go to try and escape it. And as guilt and pain slowly fills Wander, it also slowly begains to fill the player as they continue to climb giants.
Thank you oh so much...
dormin did tell wander the price would be great but wander was the one who didnt listen so he did actually try to warn him in the end
So basically the underlying message of the story is:
"The road to Hell is paved with the purest intentions."
Good to know. At least there is a (somewhat) happy ending.
I enjoy such intelligent conversation, doesn't happen as much as I'd like.
My view on this is that, whatever the case may be, Dormin was very, very powerful. Capable of extremely destructive things, no doubt.
I love the oboe in this
beautiful description!
I always loved how the final colossus' square on the map was F-8, "fate"
wow i never noticed that.
:o
On a un truc pas mal en francais aussi :) In french F-8 , "fuite" =" flee "
Forgive me for responding in English, but that's pretty awesome
Mustekalan
The colossi were acting out of desperation and self-defense......
Of course,by then,he was more Dormin than he was Wander. To stop then would have been pointless.
