- We are excited to have another Raptor among our machines again! This time it's a 2001 Yamaha Raptor 660R. This machine was the predecessor to the mighty Raptor 700, and we can't wait to see what the 660 is all about. Stay tuned to the Southwest ORV channel to see upgrades, top speed, hill climbs, and everything else we can throw at it. New exhaust and other upgrades have already been ordered...

Picked up a 2002 660r that's been in a barn for 14 years and used very little in the other years, sweet ride with some real kick !love my lil'raptor!!.
Nice! I'll bet it's in great shape! They do have some serious "kick."
Cool purchase I have owned mine for 19 years bought it brand new I have just about every upgrade possible done to mine
That's awesome that you are the original owner. I'd love to buy a new 700R and keep it for 20 years.
👍🏻
I bought my raptor brand new at the end of the season as a leftover. It was great in the beginning but after a couple of years it sat w/fuel in the carbs and i have never been able to get it to run right since. It has every single gytr add on they made then, and has been sitting around for about 15yrs now. It is absolutely mint. I'd love to have the dealer fix it right and sell it. At the time i bought it, it was on the showroom floor next to the Banshee so i had my pick. Man,did i screw that one up😖😖😖
Ha! Time has a way of showing us those things huh? I'll tell you what though, you get a professional shop to rebuild those carbs of yours and you might fall back in love.
I'm buying an 05 tomorrow lol dope to see someone just bought one as well
Yessir! It's fun to see that there's still a crowd of us out there snatching them up.
What do they usually go for?
I see them go (right now) for $2-$4 thousand, depending on condition.
I just a 05 red/white raptor .. looks and rides like new .. I got lucky.. paid 3 grand tho
Congrats! I like that color scheme. I guess right now they're worth about $3K.
Get a dynojet jet kit with the aftermarket needles and throw the air box lid is the dumpster if it hasn't already been done. Really wakes it up. That and a Curtis sparks exhaust and you go from about 35 hp to almost 50hp.
Thanks for the tips! I have a new full HMF exhaust, and an HMF jet kit just waiting to go on it. I've seen that those hp numbers you're referencing are definitely achievable. It's amazing to me that they can produce so much more power with simple mods.
@@SouthwestORV yeah it's really because the air box is just so restrictive. Doe's the HMF jet kit come with aftermarket needles? I believe you really need them if you remove the lid. I also forgot to mention I have a pro flow kit on mine, the stock filter is held in place with the air box lid so with the pro flow kit you bolt it to the air box so you can mount the filter using clamps, you could just cut a big section out the middle of the lid so it is still held in place with out the pro flow kit.
Yeah I'm not a huge fan of how Yamaha has the lid hold the filter in place - doesn't look like it was working well on mine. The Pro Flow kit looks much much better.
@@SouthwestORV bad thing about the pro flow is I just paid $60 for a replacement filter lol.
If your still looking for a rear grab bar go to vito's performance there desert bar is awesome and is a great price
Thanks for the tip! I'll check that out.
Super clean!!
It's cleaner now, I stripped it down pretty far and I've been cleaning and reassembling.
That thing is so clean for being 20 years old
Yes, and that is what drew me to it.
Looks like a sweet old ATV Awesome condition for the year.
Yes, it's in pretty dang good shape. I love the look.
Do you know if a 2003 660 raptor is worth 3500
Nice looking ride! Seems like your starting clutch is going bad brother.
I have a hunch you may be right. Bummer huh? I'd rather not dig into the motor like that...but at least there are some good solutions out there.
Nice.
I still ride the old 2005 660R 50-100 miles a weekend. Great trail machine.
Mine will be getting some much needed TLC this winter.
Awesome! I wish mine was an ‘05.
I could never get my 660 to run correctly. It was fun but I traded it for a 2003 warrior 350 in amazing condition and i like the warrior way more. I might buy a brand new raptor 700 in the future tho
I like the warriors. Great machines.
I've owned mine for over 10 years.. Had a bad wreck the summer I got it. I hit a 6x6 block of wood doing about 60mph and it barrel rolled on me about 5 times. Broke my wrist and tore my knee all to Hell, I got lucky I didnt break my neck it twisted my helmet on my head. Bent frame hubs spindles Ripped the balljoints out the a arms and wrapped the rims around the lug nuts. 😆 I did get it all fixed. Be careful haha
That's awesome! I will heed your warning...a wreck like that would be hard to recover from. Those sort of things take the fun out of it.
That’s Wild!
Great Quad the only thing is the gear box careful with that and starter clutch
That is what I've read. Looks like I bought the trouble year too, so I'm going to be cautious.
Have one of the last Blasters made in the states 2006 was the last one my dealership could get $2800.00 brand new off the showroom floor lol
I LOVE the Blasters! It's cool you got one of the last.
@@SouthwestORV bet your loving that raptor eh lol always wanted on awesome machines.
I am! I tore it down this weekend and I'm going to be putting lots of new parts on it, just giving it a once-over. I think I'll love it even more once it's back together.
The starter is messing up that happened to mine just change the starter and it will start up way easier and doesnt make that weird clang sound
Thanks for the tip!
@@SouthwestORV May possibly be the starter clutch. Mine went out when i had the 2001 and replaced it with a one-way starter clutch kit. Started very smooth after.
Yessir, I sold it to a friend just several weeks ago and he replaced the starter clutch immediately and says it's perfect now.
Your video made excited!! Ima go look at one tomorrow & if everything goes good i should have one by tomorrow night!!😎 great video
Awesome! I predict you'll love it. Mine was super fun.
@@SouthwestORV i hope so! I first buyer flaked on me but i found another one for abetter price just needs a bit of work!
That exhaust tho
Right? Terrible. Why?! It does have a new HMF full Performance Series exhaust on it now. Just buttoning it back up and I'll publish those videos too.
@@SouthwestORV sweet
Really sad Yamaha is the only one making sports quads anymore
I agree! Bring them back.
I got one today
Congrats! I hope you love it. Mine was way fun.
What is the top speed ?
I'm not sure yet! It was geared so tall that I was too chicken to find out. Top of third felt like top speed on my Recon. I have actually geared down the front sprocket one tooth now, so the top speed will be a tad slower.
stock is right around 73-75 mph.. They have a speed limiter that cuts timing once the output shaft hits a certain rpm. They can actually go a bit faster by just removing the air box lid (need adapter to mount the filter without a lid, or just cut out most of the lid) and re-jetting the carbs and modifying the speed limiter sensor gear. You have to remove the clutch to get to it.
How much was it?
I paid $2400 for it.
Thanks! I just bought two of them for 3500 I need to replace the rear axle on one and batteries hopefully not much more
Cool! Is your axle bent?
Yes on one of them I bought a cheap one for 60 bucks... hopefully it works, bad coil wire and carb issues so far. I haven’t had much time to work on anything
Bummer. I guess with age comes issues. I have been trying to find time to keep working on mine. But the exhaust and jet kit did finally come in!
Is a 2003 660r worth 3500?
Right now, if it's in great shape...probably.
that use to be my uncles quad lol
No kidding! Small world, eh?
