I'm in the process of rebuilding/ restoring my 05 Raptor 660SE. I've already went thru the suspension and replaced all bearings and bushings as well as new rear axle guts. New chain and sprockets. Fixing little things here and there. I was ready to start it and it wouldn't start. Im sure the carbs need a good cleaning. This video really helped me out. I may be writing you back again if I run into issues. I gotta get my baby going again. Bought her new in December 2004, she's been down 3 years. But not much longer.
I had bought a brand new 660 raptor in 2003. Put a Yoshimura pipe and headers on it. Put a K&N Pro flow air filter kit on it. Jetted the carbs dont remember exactly the size. It was 150-155 or 155 -160. Went up one tooth on front sprocket. Put in a wiseco high compression poston standard bore. AND ALSO A WEBB CAM . Had the head ported and polished and stiffer valve springs 3 angle valve job. We did go with a higher Rev limiter but i can remember what rpms were. And you want to talk about power and fun as hell to ride. That set up sounded good to without being all noise. It was a great set up for a good all around ride and dependability was great. Never blew up or gave problems
love watching you work. It's rare to find someone who knows their trade and shows us step by step what is going on. great job. miss those big fields you drive around... all we have in Florida is orange trees
if you can before the snow or rain put cat litter alot over all oil spots and let sit for a day then sweep up see if it pulls it out it will if you haven tryed to clean and if it has rained then it will be washed in deep
Next time instead of JB weld, for aluminum you can use aluminum brazing rods. 12:12 I know it’s thin but I’m sure you can get it to stick, maybe use some scrap aluminum or shavings as a filler as well.
The trouble with 1st gear may be the small BB at the end shifter bar. My friend lost his when he put a new linkage on. Had pull it apart again. You had to kick the shifter to the left a bit to find 1st.
I swear the 660’s were some of the toughest quads made. 2001 needed an upgrade to the dogs on the gear which was factory done on the 02 and up. But other than that they were bulletproof. I’ve seen them ran with hardly no water or oil, oil never changed etc etc and they keep running!
That is one thing I have to give him credit for over the years the lil mf is restless & relentless to keep doing this every single day lol even if it is the same routine least he isnt lazy & doesnt give up!
just got news about my YFM 700r is fixed had a problem with no spark broken wire was the culprit all good now but watching your video's helped me loads or as you say helped me a ton keep making these video's pls love what you do
I had to buy a whole needle and seat kit to get that oring. They didn’t sell it by itself on my bike and it was hard to find. $40 for the kit. I found it on eBay for $20.
I bought one of these in 2001 brand new for $5800 kept it a year before the transmission started acting up. All the forums were reporting the transmissions were bad. Even having plastic parts in them. So I sold it immediately for $4800 so I basically paid $1000 to ride it for year.
Great deal for 600. I however do not believe I would sell it to someone without a new oil tank. Knowing its just held on with some JB weld putty and selling to someone I don't feel would be correct.
@2vintage you can fix the white appearance to the rear plastics. When plastics bend they get white appearance from micro cracks and stretching of the plastic. All you need is a heat gun on high. Hold about 2 to 3 inches from the plasic. Move back and forth along the white line. When you see it start to change. Work small fast circles in the area then move along as it goes back to original color. Basically melting the micro cracks and stretch back together. When it starts to change start moving faster. You dont want to burn the plastics. Then spray when hot with tire shine to give an ultra gloss look. When you get the hang of it please show it on a video. pls thanks
That works to bring the color back but instead of using tire shine clear coat it or the white discoloration will come right back the clear coat helps hold the shine and color longer.
Joe, I had an 01 for many years. Built the engine on it due to oil comsumption and I couldn't keep the intake valves adjusted. If you have to tear it down, a couple tips. Get the vesrah stainless intake valves, the titanium ones just tulip and wear out. Also, stick with stock compression or close, the starter clutch on those and the gear it rides on is pretty weak and just can't handle any more compression. They do offer an upgraded gear and billet starter clutch, but they don't last either. Great stuff man, motivates me to fix a few again!!
Seen them with all different types of compression ratios and the gears were fine unless you had a decompression problem or it was removed or welded. One way bearing goes out under abuse or heavy use like anything else. If your valve was wearing that bad you had other issues. They use titanium valves in many performance applications for a reason! Stainless is good but it wasn’t the reason your problem went away. Case in point the well abused raptor in this video being one of the examples.
@4bearsi678 I worked on them for a living man. Nothing wrong with the decompression mechanism. The early 01's just had terrible issues with that one way clutch and starter gear. If you saw an 01 raptor with a wiseco in it on the trail back in the day, you could bet they parked on a hill so they could roll start it. We'll have to disagree on the titanium valves. I've replaced 100s of them due to tuliping. Look at the LS7 chevy engine. There isn't one on the road that hasn't had to have valves in it and guides. It's just not a valve material you'd use for longevity in my opinion. Some people say my examples are anecdotal etc. As a technician, you have no better example than seeing the same part fail over and over and alleviating that failure with a different material.
Think I still got 3 sets of those carbs sitting around in the shop, done a lot of work o. The Raptors, a few of them were just beaten to hell and back and needed more work that owners wanted done , so they're in back covered up for now. Gonna offer them a little for each. Both are without main plastics. They were torn down a ways when they were brought in. One has all peripherals removed, both have aftermarket aluminum oil tanks, so does mine. Be care, she's fast. Enjoy!!
I had a 2001 raptor 660 too. Fair warning these are notorious for the transmission blowing apart. Mine granated and split the entire cases front to back and side to side and broke a piece of case out the size of two half dollars. These need the updated 2003 transmissions.
This is unbelievable how fortunate you get on many of these buys/repairs/flips. The previous owner knew how to take things apart, not tighten the bolts back down, and buy and accumulate parts, but not how to get it running. Hope I he sees this video and learns some stuff, but probably not.
