  • Abduraghmaan Morris is an absolute gentleman. He’s always impeccably dressed, and there’s an unmissable tenderness in his voice. When Morris sings, there isn’t a dry eye in the house. That’s not his intention, but the tunes of his choir are so filled with emotion, the reaction can’t be helped. Morris is the president of the oldest Malay choir in Cape Town. Their liedjies, or folk songs, are a blend of Dutch and Eastern melodies, infused with soul and sentiment of centuries gone by. Though they resonate notes of a colourful world, they are also rooted in a deeply painful history.

    Just a quick question
How is it possible that this is an Cape Malay choirs as they are all dressed in Western attire and have a wearing Turkish red fez? Also, most songs are in Dutch Afrikaans slang
Nobody in those choirs has gone to Holland to learn Dutch as it is not taught at Coloured schools anymore

Yes, the fez is where the kopiah originates from, the Ottoman Empire had a large role in Malay warfare. We also had an Ottoman qadi in Cape Town teaching the Cape Malays and he introduced it. Google "Abu Bakr Effendi"
As for the Afrikaans being used, as the first Afrikaans was spoken by Cape Malays it will be older forms of the language containing Dutch since that is where it originated from. There is no denying that there was a great Dutch influence on Capetonians due to Apartheid and the DEIC bringing Malay slaves to Cape Town
