do they actually compete? doesnt look like it in the beginning. i'd like to see a serious race from the start instead of goofing around giving all the characters silly names and shit, but maybe that's just me.

I'm curious if any of the game developers watch/are aware of these speedrunning events?
I've heard some donations from devs read out before, but not many.
I know that both Notch from Minecraft and Toby Fox from Undertale have made donations. I also know that there was some commentary from the maker of IWTBTG at one of the runs.
GDQ: I've seen Celeste devs at the events, and Skype commentary from Shantae and Shovel Knight devs.
A Metroid Prime 1 dev was Skype'd into a GDQ speedrun.

They really needed to put more thought into the timing of the name bid wars. No excuse for waiting until they get to the character to be trying to fumble around with it.
(Especially with how overenthusiastic the donation reader was to keep slipping in.)
That did seem jarring, imagine a Super Metroid speedrun race where the runners had to stop and wait before every miniboss to be told whether or not they have to fight it. Doesn't seem appropriate for a race as any possible advantages someone gets are wiped.
It's still new. This isn't AGDQ or SGDQ. They will iron out the wrinkles. Give them time.
@@Falchieyan I feel that there would be a better example because I think routing would change depending on the mini boss they fight while they have to get characters and name them here
