The reason I am obsessed with the N7 oil, has nothing to do with the bond repair. Really, it’s because of multiple reasons. 1) It is the only hair oil I have used that didn’t weigh down my super super fine hair strands. 2) I can put a few drops on every day, without looking greasy. 3) It makes brushing my hair without breakage so much easier. 4) My hair always looks glossy and healthy. 5) The bottle makes it so you don’t over use it, coming out only one drop at a time. So any fine hair girls, I recommend to at least give it a try, it amazing. I have had it for 3 months and have gone through probably 1/8th of the bottle, if not less. It is the only product Olaplex I use.

I think people forget Olaplex is just a range. You don’t have to use every single product!!! It’s like thinking you have to use every single Redken product. Just use the products you like.
Hair type also matters so we have to take Abbey’s experience with a grain of salt unless we have exactly the same hair type. My hair is coarse and thick and it loves no 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8. I prefer using no 3 on days I want bouncy, light waves and I use k18 when I want slick smooth straight hair. K18 weighs my hair down more than Olaplex does so I use it only when I want a certain look.
OF COURSE Olaplex is a brand trying to make money. Like every single hair are brand that exists.

    • @ClayMey

Amen to that. I have androgenetic alopecia and use Olaplex 0, 2, 6, and 7 (I can use the 2 instead of the 3 because of the starter kits we can buy at the hairdressers in Italy) and my hair (bleached several times to become blonde) have never been better. I also have k18, both the mask and the professional spray. I sometimes use first Olaplex n 2, then rinse after a few hours and add k18, or I alternate. No breakage or any side effects. Plus, I don't get the thing about creating a whole line. This is the silliest remark I've ever heard. Redken has a whole line. K18 will have it soon enough. Or people think they are doing it just because. Of course, they make money. Duh. Plus, Abby uses affiliate links, which t me is totally fine but guess which product gives her the better commission? Not saying this is the reason for this sudden shift, but one has to wonder...

I use very little No 6 with the 7 it is MAGIC! I use the No 3 ONCE a MONTH its perfect. And I find it so interesting how these "influencers" Give their opinion when they are using SEVERAL products at the same time!! So do you roll the dice and say oh it was THAT ONE that caused all of my problems. Dont take what these people say too seriously this is what they do for a living, and they move on from product to product like they change their underwear! Use it yourself and get your own feel for something. I will say I have used K18 and hated it, I especially do not like the fact that you can't use conditioner before you use it and after you put it on it is VERY hard to comb thru.

Hi Abbey I use the no 3 once or twice a month - wash hair first, apply and leave on for 30 to 40 mins and then shampoo/condition/leave in/curl cream/gel as usual. I makes my curls spring up and I like it. The top layers of our hair get more weathering from the elements and it tends to make those form better curl clumps. My hair need a lot of moisture and just a small bit of protein (thick, course textured and curly hair), so many of my products are moisture focussed. I try not to use a lot of protein in my products, so as to avoid protein overload. This is not a protein treatment in my mind - it's a bond builder and curly hair already has broken bonds in the hair from the kinks in the strands. It works for me and I can usually get it on a good deal from salon services with my pro card. The K18 is so much more expensive and I cannot go without conditioner - jeez my hair would be like a wire brush without conditioner lol and I would never get a comb through it. I know you can use leave in/curl cream with it, but nope I still need the conditioner. The living proof version is also twice the price for a smaller amount, so same budget constraints apply. I don't have many highlights left in my hair and I don't use much heat etc, so I don't have brittle/breaking hair. I do have naturally very dry/course/curly hair and I'm fully menopausal, so I also have some whites growing in. The olaplex is working for my hair, but it is of course an individual thing for us all. Best wishes.

Nothing stopping you using conditioner with K18 (and Abbey has mentioned this in multiple videos; she asked the brand directly). You just have to put the K18 onto towel-dried hair after washing, wait the four minutes ensuring NO water gets on your hair, then you can use conditioner and/or hair mask. I use a shower cap and do this whole routine without even leaving the shower.

Thank you for your detailed experience report! The fact that the biggest effect of Olaplex is that the hair feels soft fits with research findings (Di Foggia et al. 2021, DOI: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2020.11.194): "• S-S *disulfide bridges* content in the cortex *does not increase* • No direct evidence of the sulfa-Michael reaction/cross-linking in the cortex. • Upon treatment more regular hair surface and more imbricated scales at SEM."
So all in all, only cortex and cuticle are changed, which helps, but there is no repair of the disulfide bridges - it's just good marketing.

Interesting, because when I tried one of her “favorite oils she recommends more” it completely destroyed my hair within weeks with incredible breakage. Yet Olaplex oil restored my hair and saved it, allowing it to regrow the length I lost because of breakage (around 2 inches), and my hair is back down to my waist. It’s so gentle on my fine hair and has really improved it. I’ve never even tried any other Olaplex products. I would just say to be careful with recommendations (whether you’re for or against something) because everyone is so different. Do a ton of your own research particularly from beauty chemists and hair care professionals before going hardcore into something. But I suppose that makes sense for anything. I’m only a stylist I don’t know all the scientific terms for hair however in school I did learn that hair has disulfide bonds and when they are broken chemically it allows the hair to change such as changing the color or something like perming or relaxing. When those bonds are broken to an extent like bleaching, then using something like olaplex once in awhile can be very helpful but because it has those bonds in there if there is too much it can overload the hair strand weighing it down, drying it out or causing it to snap even. I used olaplex before going to cos school on my virgin hair (the woman selling said it would be good for any hair) I used no. 3,4,5 and 6 as directed for a little over a month. My virgin hair that I never had a problem with and rarely put heat on started snapping and breaking and thinning so much so it looked way too thin long so I cut off 12 inches. Safe to say there is such thing as too much olaplex and it’s not for every hair type like they say. I have recently started using no. 3 again now that I know the other products were overuse and since I highlight my hair now. I still don’t think it really does much and I think most everything they have is a waste of money. Even now the olaplex 1 and 2 aren’t even as popular because those bonders are built into lighteners so they needed to come up with more and more to make that money.

    • @bklynbutters13
      @bklynbutters13 Год назад +1

I don't think she uses those two together either. For the Living Proof one, you're only supposed to use it once a week (that's what is says on the package) and Abbey washes her hair twice a week. And the K18 is only supposed to be used every 3 to 4 washes when in maintenance mode, so she'd honestly have to go out of her way to use them both in the same wash day or even close together.
I know in an older video when she had just started using K18, she said using it with Olaplex no. 3 was exhausting because she'd have to wash her hair, apply the Olaplex, wait 10 minutes, wash her hair again, apply the K18, wait 4 minutes, then apply a conditioner or mask, etc. She didn't say this next part, but I could see that since Living Proof is a leave-in that doesn't require unconditioned hair to work like K18 and doesn't require you to wash your hair afterward like Olaplex, it really is much easier to keep it around than it is to incorporate Olaplex no. 3.

Theoretically, the rest of it is supposed to be rinsed away when you rinse out the conditioner. But I honestly don't know if the LP treatment is as effective outside of the LP line since LP doesn't use silicones of any kind. I remember arguing with an Ulta employee a while back who warned me about Olaplex, and now I realize I should've listened. And my hairstylist should've told me what was going on instead of keeping it from me just because she knows how much I love my hair.

Or if they are alkaline ( which is the case with the hair dyes). Doesn’t matter much if they have build up or oils. You see that with the bleach which is alkaline..and penetrates throughout oily hair anyway. But they penetrate in different ways, the lipophilic substances penetrate threw the cuticule and the cortex, which have ( both) a small % of lipids ( around 3%..small but enough to provide the lipophilic substances entrance). The alkaline products entry after open the cuticules.

I haven’t bleached or dyed my hair in years so I don’t need the bondage repair anymore and can’t speak to its efficacy because I no longer use it. I will say that I am a SUCKER for the Olaplex scent 😭 their products smell soooo good.

No, they are making twice as much as Olaplex and they ARE extending their line, but I’m sure Abby will still promote them.

Thank you so much for this extremely informative video ! When I first started using Olaplex I absolutely loved it(#s 0,3,8, and the oil) and saw results right away…. Then I started using the #6 , which again I loved at first…but then after about a 4-6 weeks of using #6 my fine thin hair started breaking ALL over 😭 what other hair oils do you recommend for fine/thin hair instead of the Olaplex one? I Just ordered K18 after watching your video…fingers crossed it’s able to help repair my baby broken strands 🤞🏼

Great I'm a year late! No wonder its been on sale! I wish I had heard about this sooner. I have been using Ola Plex #4 and #5 on rotation for a couple years and loved the results. when I started using twice a week exclusively my head started itching/burning. My hair started falling out in chunks and strands. I kept using more think it was from something else. I discontinued using and returned all recently puchased at Ulta and Sephora Olaplex 4,5,6,& oil products. I have never had an allergic reaction before from any product.

When I use No. 0 I wash and then let air dry and then apply No. 0. This solves the how do you apply to clean and dry issue, but it does make wash day a wash weekend.

I totally hear you about switching to k18. I tend to rotate them, as I bought so much olaplex in offers its going to take me a long time to work through it! 😂 but k18 really seems to weigh my hair down. It feels great the wash after it though. I've emulsified, used less...Still get stringy bits in sections- so annoying! If anyone has any tips, let me know! Tried everything 😔

7:43 I’ve never liked clarifying shampoo ever, but are you supposed to use one? My hair won’t get super duper oily, but I live in a very dry climate. Shampooing more than once in a wash session is often enough to keep buildup at bay for me…

    Love the oil.
    Lasts 10 thousand years.
The mask - I still use it because it’s the only one I have at the moment. Dry, my hairs nice. But wet it’s tangly and when I wash it off - my hair doesn’t feel like it’s been conditioned at all 😟
    I like it all slippery.

I took a look at oil 7's ingredients break down which kind of ruined the rep of the brand for me. It is like 85% volatile silicone, which is the filler ingredient you don't want in drug store conditioners.

This girl is completely clueless. I have been a hairdresser for 30 years and I can honestly tell you if the hair was over process and lightened to the point that it was white, then, no product on this earth is going to keep it from breaking eventually. Here that has been damaged and our process to that extent will eventually break off. The reason she probably felt like the K 18 stopped. Her breakage was the breakage was finished happening. The lawsuit, as far as I know, is only involving about 30 people who I imagine, had the same issue as she did with hair, breakage and people were associating it with hair loss. She obviously hadn’t consulted with any hair professional before making this video and should’ve had a conversation with whoever over, processed her hair to begin with. overall she is annoying as she is ignorant when it comes to the subject of hair and how to keep it healthy. I personally would not listen to any of her advice or recommendations on products.

the first and only time I used 0 it burnt the skin it came in contact with, when I washed afterwards with 4 it made my scalp so itchy so I stopped using 0. I’ve found my ends got so damaged so much faster since using the whole regime, I had a trim before starting it and my hair was in good condition so unfortunately Olaplex just isn’t for me

  • @TrinaGallo

I totally agree with Olaplex regarding No 6. I’ve always found it lightweight and if I accidentally apply way too much, a quick rinse is literally all you need to make it perfect again.
Re no. 4, I Gotta go ashy because I’m trying to get as much “life” outta these highlights which I get mostly to camouflage my “natural white highlights’” which look kinda gross. Especially with my skin tone! And 4P really cleans 🧼 my hair too! But I agree- using shampoo, letting hair dry all matted and nasty then applying No. 0 is a pain in the a**! But for once every 2-3 months, I find it’s worth it.
I gotta correct you though- I think so many more people have severely damaged hair that’s beyond the breadth of Olaplex than you think…. but I watch a lot of bleach fail vids 😂

Hey Abbey, great video! And I agree with you: I am of the mindset that I do not believe that Olaplex's initial idea was to have this huge product line initially unless they just got greedy. I have used their entire line and like you I began to see breakage after a while but especially after the no. 0 went from being the bottle with the nozzle to a spray. I remember they said that it could not be airborne and poof like Houdini out it comes out with a spray. My hair began to break off (I will not say since I am not a chemist that it was because of the product I will just be diplomatic and say it was a crazy coincidence) and it stopped working on top of the fact portions of my scalp began to feel numb and other areas felt like someone had pulled my hair. In other words my scalp was either sensate of numb until I stopped using the no. 0 and no. 3. I never thought their shampoos and conditioners were all that and the oil and no 6 were just ok. There are better and less expensive products out there.

If you don’t have damaged hair, you don’t need any of the Olaplex REPAIR products. As u mentioned, if u have fine or medium hair the olaplex shampoo and conditioner are actually to heavy for these two hair types. U still can use the styling products but pls don’t use to much!! The less products you use for your hair the greater, lighter, healthier and long lasting before washing your hair is going to be. They want to you to buy anything because they want to make money. Just search for professional hair stylist who is explaining all the products and the ones you actually need. ( the only repair Item is actually only no. 3) the shampoo and conditioner also works but not necessary.

I like olaplex. Specifically 3 . I prefer my k18 . I just love the way my curls loosen / melt when the k18 goes on.
I alternate using them. I over it did it once and I don’t think I got the olaplex all the way out a long with some other craziness and my hair felt so bad . But when I use it correctly. It’s nice.
I get brands expanding and scaling. I don’t think it’s a problem. Some people like systems.
Tip: always wash the olaplex 3 alllll the way out. Lol

I am genuinly confused that you liked k18 ovrr olaplex 3. For me, k18 left my hair in this extremely unmanageble state where i was unable to comb even through it. It was a matted mess! Even if it was repairing my hair, it wouldnt result so in the end because of all the dammage from the combing and the 100000 little knits. One of the worst peoducts i tried. I couldnt even use it for more than 2 times, that s how bad it was

Same. I'm in maintenance mode with both Olaplex no. 3 and K18, so I don't even have to use them every wash day now.
Because of that, I've started incorporating the Living Proof leave-in bond repair too (LP had a crazy BF deal on their website and FabFitFun just recently offered the product for $24 [retail $45] in a members only sale, so I stocked up lol) to make sure my is protected through styling and mechanical manipulation.
I used to have high porosity hair that was prone to breakage and now I don't even think I'm high porosity anymore. I'm definitely normal to normal low porosity now and I'm only seeing normal shedding now (long hairs instead of short, broken off hairs).

How do you incorporate the Redken Acidic bonding conditioner with k18? Do you ever use it as a conditioner directly after K18? I love K18 since I started using conditioner after leaving it on for 4 minutes (thanks to you!) and just picked up the Redken Acidic Bonding conditioner per your recommendation. Would love to know how you space them out or if you ever use them together! Since you mentioned you’d be hesitant to use Olaplex and K18 just curious how you feel about the K18 and Redken combo. Btw you’re my hair guru, my hair has actually been transformed since I started consistently following your tips and is healthier than its been since before I started coloring it. Thank you so much!!! ❤❤❤
