Speaking as a family doctor who used to work in a derm clinic, flaky, oily scalp can be due to yeast and bacteria that can be treated with anti-dandruff products. Head&Shoulders or zinc pyrithione shampoo, Selsun Blue or selenium sulfide shampoo, Nizoral or ketoconazole shampoo, coal tar products are also amazing for seborrheic dermatitis and psoriatic dermatitis. You can also use the Neutrogena acne wash with salicylic acid in the orange bottle on your scalp. Wash your scalp every other day for a whole month with these and it should be 99% improved. Continue with one of these at least once weekly after.

Flipping the hair to shampoo “against gravity” works really great, and also flipping it over to do a final rinse gets all that hidden shampoo rinsed away. When I really want to get crazy, I do a final-final rinse of distilled water with a sports water bottle I keep in the shower. Helps manage the hard water build up. Great video, thanks Abbey!

I washed my scalp/hair every day for 38 years. Then, I went no poo. My hair was shine, very oily (scalp too), 3a/3b and mid to thick and it became an opaque dry mess, fine and 2b/2c/3a after 7 years. It thinned and fell to the point I got an androgenetic alopecia diagnose.
And no. It was not related to the Deva products, which I used in the beginning but didn't like the work out needed to use them. I ditched the brand.
The last 4 years I reverted back to my old care (sulfates and silicones), spend a lot of $ on hair therapies and selected products, and my hair is back on track.
I stopped no poo in 2019. So, just have in mind that even back there shampoos had already come a long way to clean hair without scrubbing your hair of everything.
Lesson learned: Don't fall for internet trends or trends promoted by people that are selling products related to it (Deva). Let alone if you are a chemist like me. If your hair is ok with whatever you are doing, there is no reason to change.

WAXY SCALP: for about 2 years I had a huge problem with a waxy feeling scalp with painful sores. Even after trying many clarifying shampoos, it was just getting worse. It never looked or felt clean. I had bloodwork to check for hormone issues, went to a dermatologist, installed a 3 stage water filter system and replaced my water softener. I even tried dish soap! In the end, it was caused by Olaplex applied at the salon. The last time I had it added to my color treatment (2 years ago) I reached up and felt my hair before and after application of Olaplex 2 by my experienced/Olaplex trained stylist. A lightbulb went off and I realized what the cause was after 2 years of scalp issues. I have never had Olaplex added to my color again and I have never had a problem with waxy scalp or scalp sores since then. I know many people love Olaplex, but for anyone frustrated by waxy scalp with sores - if your stylist uses Olaplex, try discontinuing and see if your scalp problems end.

And my hair never felt worse 😅 It became a dull, heavy mess and my curls stopped curling! Went back to my clarifying shampoos and silicones 3 months after and never looked back. My hair curled normally again and became shiny and healthy. My favourite clarifying shampoos are L'Occitane Volume and Force and the Ogx ACV clariying one. My hair is always refreshed and bouncy.

I have PCOS and I tried almost everything I found online to get rid of my oily scalp. Nothing worked. Washing more, washing less, every type of cleanser including flour, clay and soap, it’s an internal issue. Now I accepted that I just have to wash my hair a lot. I use clarifying shampoos and BHA and alternate between washing standing up and upside down to make sure I get everything regularly. My hair starts looking greasy after about 12 hours. That stayed the same since I was 13 years old, so when puberty hit. I am now in my 30s and nothing I did changed the amount of oil my scalp produces.

Sometimes I have noticed if I use a clarifying shampoo too much it dries my scalp and it produces oil faster because it has become dehydrated. I actually switched to baby shampoo or a normal shampoo and make sure that I shampoo 2x so that I have a really thick lather. Make sure you are applying your shampoo to the actual scalp instead of just the hair follicles. I love Livelovelocks, he makes great videos and have really transformed my hair.

This is exactly my situation, too. Except I’m not diagnosed with PCOS but with endometriosis and also acne vulgaris. I‘m 25.
I too have tried everything. Literally everything. It‘s so tiring. Also, the amount of people trying to shame people with an oily scalp into not washing their hair is so upsetting. First thing I gotta do in the morning is take a shower, wash my face and my hair. No matter how much effort I put into it, it‘s the same every day. I‘ve been struggling with this for 10-15 years. My hair is also the super fine type.
I can‘t go a day without shampoo. My hair is so greasy, literally down to my ears after 20ish hours. It could not be more greasy if I put some heavy oil like coconut oil onto my scalp on purpose.
Testing shampoos etc is hard because almost every single product contains comodogenic stuff that breaks me out. I‘m using baby shampoo at the moment.
Sometimes I get so jealous of people with normal hair. Taking care of this mess is so exhausting and hard to manage (time wise or when I stay at my relatives‘ places when I visit them…).
I wish you the best. Just know, you‘re not alone!

@@honey_love1302I am in no way suggesting you must go out and get it(as if its that easy) but if you have ever considered accutane amongst the very serious cons that should always be considered, one of the pros is the oils don't just dry up on your face, they do everywhere, including your scalp. I took it for just stubborn acne and wow what a difference it made in my oil production in my scalp that I was not expecting at all. That was back in 2017 and my scalp still doesnt produce the amount of oil it used to and its def a great thing for me. Again, accutane is a very serious medication with very serious side effects, but if you hadn't already considered for your acne vulgaris, the oil part may be a benefit thats worth considering 💗

I copied and pasted this from The National Library of Medicine government website of a study that was done , Alkaline pH may increase the negative electrical charge of the hair fiber surface and, therefore, increase friction between the fibers. This may lead to cuticle damage and fiber breakage. It is a reality and not a myth that lower pH of shampoos may cause less frizzing for generating less negative static electricity on the fiber surface.

As a certified trichologist, would you be willing to make a dedicated video for coarse, frizzy hair textures? I know that’s not your hair type so you wouldn’t recommend the same products that you particularly use, but maybe you can discuss ingredients to look for in shampoos, conditioners and styling products that smooth frizz and add some weight and protection to fluffy, dry hair. I wear my hair naturally curly, but I also like to blow dry my hair straight sometimes.
I always see tons of content for fine hair adding volume but I actually need the opposite 😂

I’ve been watching her for over a year…and i have thick/coarse 3c/4a hair i wear both in protective styles and straight…other than the frequency in which i was my hair (i try and wait two weeks between washes at least)…the products she mentions for certain issues (growth, strength, clean scalp, protein, moisture, etc) all work on my hair…everything works on my hair.
She doesn’t mention shea moisture and i still love their shampoo and conditioner (not their stylers so much) but other than that brand, I’ve used a lot of her recommendations with a ton of success.
Adding this comment in case she never does a video exclusively for ur specific hair type.

This is so interesting to me. I wash my hair every week to week and a half. Usually it’s about a week and a half though. I don’t have dry scalp or anything, my scalp and hair just don’t really get dirty or oily. Even though I go that long, my hair still smells really good. I use a scalp scrub and then shampoo and find that works best for me. I was double shampooing before but it was just annoying lol. I use sulphate free shampoos and it made such a huge difference for me, before I made the switch I had severe sebhorratic dermatitis on my scalp and it was constantly bleeding and had plaque buildup. I’m definitely happy I discovered the difference, though sometimes I miss a good clarifying clean.

I had itchy/flaky scalp all my life until my hair stylists recommended that I dry my scalp instead of air drying. Turns out the science is true on that too. Bacterial will multiply on damp scalp. So I dry my scalp but not my ends and the itchy/flaky scalp has completed ended.

The idea of emulsifying the shampoo before applying it makes soooo much sense to me! I too have a ton of hair and I struggle getting the shampoo evenly dispersed so I’m definitely trying this! Thanks for all the great tips!
Also…I have been noticing the same thing about how my hair last post salon visit vs when I do it at home. I feel like at home my hair looks so limp and gets greasy in like 5 minutes and when I leave the salon my blow out lasts for everrrrrrrrr. Def trying these tips.
Oooohhh also, one last question: does hard water make your hair greasy? I live in Southern California where the water is soooo hard and I’m convinced it’s effing my hair and skin but that’s another story lol. Are you a fan of these shower heads that are filters?? I’ve seen some conflicting info out there that’s making me think they actually won’t help with the hard water problem? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!!

I used to wash my hair as needed, which was every three days or so. But I’m currently dealing with hair loss from a nutrient deficiency and now I’m kinda terrified to wash my hair because I lose so much hair in the shower. I’m applying minoxidil and I’m treating my deficiency but I have this fear of washing my hair now because any amount of shedding puts me in a bad mood 😅 but I am definitely noticing dandruff and buildup especially from the numerous layers of minoxidil that I apply, and I don’t want to give myself further scalp issues

I’ve learned so much from you over the past few years about my hair and my daughters too. The one thing I haven’t found a solution to is the top portion of my hair being knotted after shampooing. I don’t put conditioner near my scalp due to an oily scalp, I use the emulsifying double cleanse method, I use 2 K18 shampoos which I love, and I have zero hair damage. My hair is very long and fine and prone to tangling naturally as is my youngest daughter. There is never a scenario where either of us comes out of the shower without knots in the top portion.

Might be how to massage your scalp and/or how to dry the hair. I brush and then split my hair in half down the middle before getting it wet and I keep it parted all the way until it has airdried and I've brushed it out with a leave-in spray. When I massage the shampoo into my scalp with my fingertips, I'm making back-and-forth motions instead of circular motions to avoid creating knots.I never bunch my hair up or rub it, especially when wet. When I dry my hair, I tap and lightly squeeze my hair with a smooth (not the fuzzy one, actually just a smooth quick-dry travel towel) microfiber towel while the hair is laying down. Then I let it airdry. While it's airdrying, I leave it alone. Don't touch it, don't lean on it etc. It's fragile when wet/moist so let it be!
I barely have anything to detangle anymore after I started all of this. I sleep with my hair in a braid every single night and when I brush it out in the morning, there are no knots resisting the brush.
Invest in a good leave-in and add a bit of hair oil to the ends.

This is such an important and underrated topic. I wish this video had been available my whole life! I was definitely one of the people who fell for the whole gentle shampoo thing and avoided certain ingredients for years and my hair was awful. I finally stopped avoiding certain ingredients and really focused on cleansing my scalp and I saw a huge difference in my curls. My only regret was wasting money, time, and effort on those gentle shampoos that were just giving me an itchy scalp and ugly hair. What a scam!
Also, shampooing twice has been a game changer! My scalp isn’t itchy/irritated anymore and my curls are healthier. 🎉

One of my favorite shampoos is a basic, frangrance-free one from a brand called "Neutral". It costs around 30SEK (which is somewhere around $3). I also love Pantenes "micellar cleanse&nourish" shampoo. That one costs around 30-35SEK (around $3-$3,50)
Sometimes, I use a basic, frangrance-free shampoo from another brand called "Mevolution" to clarify my scalp, because it feels more stripping.. that one costs around 20SEK (around $2).

Hey, do you know of any professional brand shampoos and scalp treatments that are good for oily scalp that are also color safe/color protective? I’m having significant difficulty finding something that fits this description. I have fine, thin hair and wavy (2b-3a) so it’s hard to find anything that’s not just leaving a bunch of buildup on my hair/leaving my roots oily in 1 day while also being safe for color. I have symptoms of flaking/ itching always, even with dandruff medications like pyrithione zinc (head and shoulders) and ketoconazole (Nizoral). Oh and we have hard water in my area, no way around it.

I break a few of your "rules", and that's been working well for me.
As I mentioned in comments on previous videos, my hair was a lot like Abbey's, very long and fine and dense. Then I developed a serious health issue and had three periods of *intense* hair shedding from stress, probably losing 2/3 my hair. I'm medically stable now, and my hair is growing back.
I did not want to have to cut off my remaining long hair, so I babied it like crazy. Oil on the ends, super rich conditioners, bond repair treatments ... I switched from my normal shampoo bar to a gentle shampoo. [Verb Ghost] My scalp became super dry at the same time, so I switched to just one shampooing. I started conditioning my scalp, too.
I don't know if it was just time, or if my products and routine helped, but my hair is growing back, and my scalp is a little oilier than it was. I'll have to adjust my routine again soon.
Summary: do what's best for your own hair, and be prepared to change your routine if your needs change. If you don't know what's best, Abbey's recommendations are a great place to start.

I use the Pantene volume shampoo twice a week. It’s great when I need a good clarifying, but now it’s too harsh for twice a week. What is a nice gentle shampoo that’s has the lowest amount of clarifying, but still good for my hair that I can alternate with it? I don’t use any products in my hair normally, so I don’t need a lot of clarifying, just something gentle. My hair isn’t oily or super dry. I have medium to low density of hair.
