I own the book and have found the best technique is to pull off little chunks at a time or little wefts and not really wrap them around but place them along the back and front coating both sides and after applying the soap water mix to wrap the excess around the sides. its a common technique called water felting and thread banger made a video years back that shows it with cat hair quite perfectly.
