We recently had a national referendum (we get to vote 3-4 times a year on a few proposals) in Switzerland concerning abortion: Some religious nuts wanted that the mandatory health insurance no longer covers abortions. 69.8% voted against the proposal and thus abortion is still covered by mandatory health insurance. That one settled it pretty well for us. I am not hearing anything from the religious nutters anymore after the vote. Maybe the USA should try something similar and see how it'd work out for them.
***** We do have catholics here... They're a bit conservative when it comes to reproductive rights. Then are the morons who thought they'd save money if it'd pass - they just didn't know that it's only a buck per year. Then there are the 45% who didn't vote at all.
