The reason was the succession plan filed with the NFL. They would have had to rescind their agreement with Mayo in other to be able to come to an agreement and when the Vrabel firing came out of Tennessee the cog in New England were probably turning to put Mayo in place which means it was probably too late for them to consider the possible candidacy of Vrabel.
I never realized there was such a negative perception of Belichick and the Patriot way. Hiring Mayo in this fashion (premeditated under contract) seems to be the epitome of the Patriot way. It doesn't matter if you are a 6th round pick, a former wrestler, or an assistant coach....if you worked hard you earned an opportunity. Mayo obviously earned his opportunity when he entered into the contract. If that's the Patriot way, why all the negative press? It’s not about filling a quota (or definitely shouldn’t be).. it’s about looking for talent in places you didn’t previously.. the fact that not too long ago, you had executives and media members openly say that “black” people couldn’t/shouldn’t be coaches or QBs is why people celebrate the hires now.. it’s almost celebrating the maturity and evolution of the owners and executives (for not being as closed minded as they used to be) as much as it is a celebration of the coaches for getting the opportunity.. Being a former and a much younger guy, I would assume that Mayo is not going to be as rigid as his former coach/boss was, I think he can see what works and doesn’t in todays NFL. I don’t know if they’ll have the quick turnaround the way Ryans had in Houston but I think Mayo was a worthy hire and hopefully he has success.

For me its a dangerous hire with the lack of coaching experience the guy has, him never being a coordinator let alone HC just raises so many red flags for me. I hope the guy succeeds but honestly I wouldnt give him more than 30% that he will right now - the right hires at GM, OC and DC would raise that considerably but looking right now he has a lot of things to juggle with no practical experience of juggling.

For me its a dangerous hire with the lack of coaching experience the guy has, him never being a coordinator let alone HC just raises so many red flags for me. Maybe he showed the Pats behind the scenes he has what it takes - sounds like it was in his contract from the get go though so why would they do that four or five years ago?
I hope the guy succeeds but honestly I wouldnt give him more than 30% that he will right now - the right hires at GM, OC and DC would raise that considerably but looking right now he has a lot of things to juggle with no practical experience of juggling.
