    The little one kept coming up to Dave, looking for potential goodies in his hand. The fact that he was able to get this little one to come to him, without food, is pretty spectacular. =)

    That was great! Thank you for this video! I am a shelter volunteer and I work with many dogs at the shelter. This info was very helpful. And I love that you remained patient with her! Bless your heart....

    These are truly educational videos for people like me (I'm not a dog owner) who can better appreciate the body language of friends' dogs.

    This reflects what I have learned about getting animals to warm up to you. Give them good memories of you. Come, be nice, then leave and come again later. I got the squirrels at my work place to come to me so much I had to start shooing them away.

    My little guy was a really shy guy when I met him. Something about him made me want him. I knew the place he was at was a very good place, it was just who he was he was 5&1half months when he came home with me. Now he takes things in stride! I take him in so everyone can see how he turned out. He was at the vet last month and a very big dog wanted to play I looked at the owner who said the dog just wanted to play so I gave my guy some slack, he went right up and they got along great. I made sure both dogs were under control.

    Thanks, this is a very useful video. I have gone to shelters and if the dog wouldn't come to me after a while I would leave (which is what they wanted to begin with) because I didn't know what else to do.

    This came naturally to me. I just knew I wanted the dog to know I wasn't going to harm it. You stick your hand out towards them slowly and then pull it back slowly after they sniffed it. YOu pet them then leave and sit down. Just stuff like that.

    we have a female chihuahua terrier we picked up from the animal shelter. she was very fearful in the shelter and during the interaction she ran away from us as far as she could on the leash. but we slowly approached her and offered a hand for her to sniff and after this she rolled on her back allowing us to gently pet her. but since we brought her home she has still been very fearful. she's lied in the little bed we got for her, she won't seem to eat unless we put a bowl of wet food to her and she hasn't been drinking much water. before we took her from the shelter they did take her to the animal hospital to get her spayed and she's been on medication for it. but so far she doesn't bark, she doesn't bite, she's scared of her own squeak toys, she doesn't play, she won't eat unless we bring it to her, she hasn't been drinking water, and when she needs to go outside it's a very subtle hint like simply looking at the window. she lets us pet her but often looks uncomfortable with us by her. she's very inactive, if we were to find a large room she would find someplace comfortable and simply lay down. her not drinking is a very big concern, but she'll also freak out on walks when people walk by. we don't really know how to get her warmed up. most of the time we just leave her on her bed which we put on the couch because she loves that spot. we don't want to scare her more but doing this she'll just lay in that one spot all day. we have to pick her up to take her on walks. i'm not sure if most of this behavior is because of her medication, but I at least know she's a fearful dog nonetheless. how do you think we should deal with the situation?

      Time and patience is the key. She'll get there if you do. Fearful dogs are a lifelong commitment and require constant management to build their confidence up.
      The rewards for sticking with it are amazing, I promise.

    did you give here treats before cause it looks like when you call her over she looks at your hand or is waiting to see if your going to give her something and when she sees you don't have anything she walks away.

  • @pitbull65taz
    @pitbull65taz 8 лет назад +2

    Not sure why food is so bad.

    • @SacDogGuy
      @SacDogGuy  8 лет назад +8

      It's definitely not bad! Most (90%+ ?) dogs in this initial fearful state won't eat anything. But if she did get to the point of being more relaxed and became interested in food, food could be that vital tool that gets her moving towards you or staying with you, thereby helping her. I didn't have food, and don't use it regularly, and in this case, I used movement and play to get her coming towards me and being OK with me. To each their own. I have techniques I am comfortable with, but would not criticize any humane methods that help dogs.

      Dave Rocha Okay, I see your point, agreed.

      Its in Stages. You want them to come to you because it WANTS to, not because you have food. I use food for obedience training. NOT confidence builders.

    Men always pet small dogs so roughly!! Gently does it, chances are if the dog looks small, delicate and sensitive- it is!!

    • @SacDogGuy
      @SacDogGuy  8 лет назад +28

      I was petting assertively because it's more like mothers/other animals would do it. Also, though I didn't state it in the video, this dog (and other shelter dogs) need to get used to all kinds of different touches from random people. When I pet her, she was in a receptive trusting mood, which is just the time to train her to associate various types of touch with affection and calmness. This dog was in no way too "delicate" to be pet like that.

      Andrea Paul those were in no way aggressive mean pets... the dog was not hurt, or she wouldn't be coming back for more pets...
