- Today I review and take a closer look at three killer vintage watches. First up is the retro early 70s "baby blue" automatic Omega Seamaster 166.088 120m diving watch I recently acquired. Secondly, I take a look at not just one, but two Seiko 6139 Pogues. These hugely iconic Japanese chronographs were not only the first Seiko automatic chronographs but the first automatics to make it into space. Last but by no means least is a stunningly elegant and classy Stowa Bauhaus inspired manual wind piece from the 1940s.

I love my Pogue. I got mine as a Christmas gift in either '78 or '79. As I was either 11 or 12 yrs old, I had no idea of the significance of the timepiece. I just thought it looked cool !! Luckily mine is in great shape !!

Ugh... I so want that Seiko Pogue with gold colored dial. So wish Seiko reissues the Pogue. This is one of your best reviews (with history of the watch).
The Seamaster line is impressive. Doesn't matter from what period it is, they are all so beautiful!

I thought the Pogue was a bit ugly until I listened to the back story and now I'm in love with it's uniqueness. It's like if the Bee Gees were working at NASA. Fab video.
I completely agree with what you said at the end about the character of vintage watches. They are not top of the line anymore but they still keep time like a champ and look classy as hell.
Found one of these washed up on the beach when I was 5 years old, estimated to have been underwater for 6 months & still working perfectly. Dad wore it for years & passed it down to me, I'll pass it to my eldest son when the time is right.
Best advice with Seiko 6139 is to leave the chronograph running. Acts as running seconds and stops the clutch from wearing out. Once the clutch goes, you need a donor movement - no spare parts left out there. Pogue looked good on the wrist. Great stuff TGV, loved it.

I enjoyed your video! My dad wore a Seiko 6139-6005 when I was just a little one and I remember the watch fondly. Recently he gave the watch to me and I had it serviced and replaced the crystal with a NOS one. What an absolute stunning watch! I have since become obsessed with watches and I find myself watching a lot of RUclips watch videos, soaking up as much information as I can. I love the fact that you can find the appeal in an old Timex watch and talk about watches that are in a completely different league.

Modern watches can be very good, but the right vintage watch in good condition is always a classic and a treasure. My pick of these 3 is the little Stowa with the Arabic numerals, sub-seconds dial and slender hand set. Having said that the Omega and Seiko Pogue have history and quality on their side. The Stowa is a very handsome watch... very nice piece for a nice, laidback and dry, sunny weekend drive...

Holy Cow that vintage Seiko Pogues is a thing of 70s style and beauty! Thank you for taking the time to really explain the watch, it's provenance and it's unique history. Can a watch posses a manly sex appeal of it's own? In this case you've shown that it certainly can.

That Stowa really is pure class. Literally, everything else has been stripped away and what is left is class. Perfect. That Seiko dial is just the kind I get crushes on. I almost bought a badly worn Orient just because it had an outrageously pink dial. That is almost as shocking.

I Argentina that golden-faced chrono was sold as the 007, allegedly because Bond had worn it on a movie. One of the most coveted chronos of the 70s. Love your channel TGV; you speak in a manner we foreigner have no problem understanding, unlike lots of your cockney-talking, fellow countrymen. Such a fun video! When buying a new timepiece, it's as easy to ignore the heritage of an old house as it is to appreciate it. But going vintage forces us to truly study the history of the piece. A next-level pursuit for the watch enthusiast! Wonderful examples, all three.
Grandfather's mystery watch found + cancer convalescent help!!! While looking at/ dreaming about the Rolex 116622 Yacht Master (blue dial), I was fortunate to come across the Urban Gentry Channel. This channel has been instrumental in my recovery as I went through 6 weeks of radiation and slowly start recovering from curable throat cancer. When I viewed this video, I was shocked to see my Grandfather's WW2 watch that he acquired for a pack of smokes at the end of the war from a German officer POW. The watch has no brand on the dial or back. He wore this watch for the rest of his life and I was left the watch 25 years ago. The Unitas watch in the video is almost an exact match for the watch and certainly the military history corresponds correctly. Thanks for helping identifying my Grandfather's watch and much more for helping me get through the toughest event of my life. I will be a life long fan.
Wow. Thank you for the mention, I appreciate it. A customer told me about it this morning. Yes, Pogue's actual watch was a 6139-6005 with dial marking "Water 70m Resist". His was made in August 1971.

Wow what a flashback. The Seiko Pogue 6139 was my first Seiko that I bought after getting a part time job in high school. I bought it at a military PX in Hawaii (Army brat here). I loved that watch and regret selling it to a friend on a neighbor island as they were not available there.
Great video, Tristano. I agree, each of these pieces has their own charm. Makes one wonder if in 30, 40, 50 years from now if watches purchased today will be equally charming or iconic. Thx for the review.
Another great video Tristano, nice you did an overview rather than a full in depth review this time. All extremely iconic pieces and all desirable in their own right. My Seiko Pogue stood up well to close scrutiny, surprisingly so and I thank you for doing it justice. May be you will do a full review of the Pogue some time; I for one think it's too an important a piece not to? The 6139 movement was arguably the first automatic chronograph to be released to general sale and it's not commonly known they are vertical clutch column wheel movements too; both features are extremely desirable even to this day. For interest, the Pogue you demonstrated here runs accuracy at -8 seconds per day; incredible for a 46 year old time piece!

I love the sheer simplicity of the Stowa especially the hands. In fact i'd go as far to say that the hands are the most beautiful i've seen on a vintage piece.

Amen! I second your emotions. It is missing the point to compare such vintage pieces with more contemporary examples. Would you compare a pre-war Rolls Royce with a 2017 vehicle? I would hope not. Therein lies the appeal; the magic. An oft missing glimpse into another era. An all too rare opportunity to experience and appreciate where we've been and where we are now. Keep 'em coming, Tristano! Great video! Beautiful timepieces! My Wonderful Wife recently gifted me a 6139 6000 proof june 69 blue face. It's got a couple scratces on the crystal, but shows no other signs of being 51 yrs old.

I absolutely love the Seamaster. So unique. So classy. It's easy to buy an Omega that EVERYONE has. This shows actual taste.
Great video! There is so much character with vintage watches. You made a very good point about the water resistance with vintage watches. I recommend a pressure test after new gaskets are installed to give you that piece of mind. I lost a watch once due to old gaskets that no longer sealed out water.

My Dad just gave me a Seiko 6139 that has a black face with black and red bezel. It is not currently running and has some good scuffs in the bezel. I discovered Spencer Klein in colorado, who has been recommended for service, but wonder if you might recommend another watchmaker for service that is nearer to Vancouver? Thanks for the excellent videos. You are a true gentleman and a delight to listen too.

That gorgeous Stowa defines elegant simplicity. It appears to be in pristine condition, remarkable for a watch from the 1940s. It really is a lovely watch.

I bought a new Seamaster 120 in Switzerland in 1971. Mine is a 165.027 with the 552 movement (no date complication). I bought it new in the box but it might have been a late 1960s model. Mine had the heads of rice bracelet that fell apart decades ago. I didn't know any better and discarded it. My bezel looks a lot different from yours, recessed below the crystal and has a lume pip at the zero marker. Uninterrupted coin edge.

I can imagine a perlon strap on that Stowa. Absolutely beautiful timepiece... it's true what they say: sometimes less is more.
All of them are great, specially the fourth one that owned by some one in nasa before. But the stowa is another.realy nicely built that i think it needs more specific care in a collection.
Enjoyed the review, I've got the 6139-6001 with a silver dial from November 1970. I'm going to have it serviced for it's 50th birthday. By the way when you press to change the date, if you press a little harder it will also change the day mine has the choice between English and Japanese days. I wear it every day I probably should take better care of it.

Love all of them, but love Stowa the most. That Stowa got its design inspiration from a 1924 Lange & Söhne. Then Stowa start producing the Bauhaus model from 1927. Nicely done TGV!

I have a Seiko 6138 8030. I think that the Seiko automatic chronographs from 70s are very beautiful and great timepieces.
this episode gives me a second chance to propose the subject of vintage 70 digital watches pre gschock era like the texas instruments, hewlett packard (both with red led digits) and the citizen digi ana from the early 80s

This really makes up a little collection for the person who cares for having something different. You're right; it's charming beyond criticism.
I suppose that the Seiko has the opportunity for manual winding??? I can't see how it would work in weightless conditions as a automatic watch only.

That Stowa is stunning in its simplicity
Like the crown on the Pogue, the 2 o'clock arming button on a Seiko Bellmatic advances the date when pushed.
Not sure if the feature is unique to Seiko but it makes it very easy to adjust the date on shorter months. No need to pull out a crown to first position and remembering which direction to turn.
Damn it, now I’ve got to add Seiko to my already out of control Vintage Japanese watch habit.
What other Japanese watches do you have, if you don't own a single Seiko? Citizen maybe?

I have a March '72 Pogue 6319-6002 with resist text, the first Pogue you showed is a July '71 and the second Pogue you showed can be dated July '72.
the pogue is cool. I seem to remember seeing someone wear one back in the day.
So, I'm having my dad's 6139 from '72 repaired at the moment and I can't think of anyone better to ask about what Nato to use... I'll keep the bracelet around but as a desk worker typing all day the nato bands are really all I can do without hurting my wrist or having to take off the watch. What do you think? I'm leaning towards either gray or blue.

Good video TGV, but will you do a buyer's guide for the Seiko Pogue? Tracking down reliable information with clear reference pictures is difficult to say the least, and certainly tedious. I would definitely hope to see such a video from you!

The omega is beautiful and I would enjoy wearing one. They are getting expensive unfortunately and I've heard horror story with servicing. Yet if I ever get a chance to grab one I would take my chance.
