Great video!! My only tip is to not add the essential oil until the end, after you've taken the pot off the heat. Essential oils are volatile and you loose the health benefits of the oil if you heat it. Thanks for sharing!!
Agreed on adding the Essential Oils OFF the heat. A slower melt on the double boiler too.....a gentle heat will melt in about the same time. Maybe a few seconds more.... You give great info, ideas, etc.. I enjoying watching & learning from you! Thanks Kelly!! 💜💌💔🌹🐾🍀🚚🚦
Dyana Marquez what health benefits lord. All it’s ever been proven to help is stimulate the limbic system in the brain and even then other things that smell strong do that. You’re in a pyramid scheme
Essential oils do not provide health benefits for skin. They are actually harmful to the skin since they are fragrant compounds (natural doesn’t mean safe, and this is a great example of that). Essential oils are simply there to give a pleasant aroma and taste to the balm. Which I fully understand why people would want that. I just wanted to clarify that essential oils are not beneficial to the health of the skin at all (like many blogs state). Now, there are antioxidant and calming properties to some, like lavender oil for example, but you still run into the issue of the fragrant components. So while those beneficial compounds would be beneficial for skin if they existed without the fragrant compounds also in the lavender, the fragrance is still there.
Good morning Kelly! It's Kelly! ; ) Lol I make body products and this is a great recipe. Got a couple of tips for everyone... After the balms "cool", you might encounter a small hole in the center of of the tube or they might be not level if you had to top the tube off. You can get a heat gun and lightly go over the tops to melt it and it will give you a really professional look. Next tip...For doing a larger quantity, you can get a rubber band and put it around all the tubes to hold them together before filling. It makes it a lot easier to fill so they won't fall over. Ugh! Lol Hope this might help someone! : ) Have an awesome day! Hugs from Texas
I love making my own lip balm. A trick I use in to turn a styrofoam egg carton upside down and stick your empty tubes in the area the egg goes. It prevents spillage. Love this video!
This was awesome! some advice is not to add the essential oil until the end, after you've taken the pot off the heat. Essential oils are volatile and you loose the health benefits of the oil if you heat it. i really enjoyed this video, ive been making these for many years they are great gifts =)
teri zachary i prefer Palmers coco butter lip balm. I tried burts bees an it dries out my lips so i stopped using it after i found palmers coco butter lip balm it glides on my lips making them soft an smooth.
I just came across this video a week ago. Followed the recipe today… I have it on now and it feels great! Smells great! I would prefer more flavor so next time I will add a little more flavoring. Thank you for sharing!
I’ve been making my lip balms for about 3 years now. One thing I learned was to stay away from using citrus essential oils on skin exposed to the sun. As much as I love white grapefruit and sweet orange EO’s, I do not put them in my lip balms.
sweetangiegirl1 they are for the scent. they can be harsh on the skin if you are allergic or the harsher scents (peppermint, citruses, etc) may not be worth putting on your lips. the softer ones (sage, tea tree, etc) will be nicer to your lips. or you could add the flavoring and that might add a bit of scent, idk because i don’t use flavoring. also the almond and coconut oils are not essential oils, they are like moisturizers.
When I first saw the title chapticks - I thought I don’t want to do that - but of course- now i do. You make us want to do all it. Can’t wait for part 2
I’ve been trying to make chapstick and it comes out pretty soapy. When you buy it and taste it it taste awesome like the flavoring but mine is soapy is it the Shae butter? When tasting shae butter by itself I think that’s the issue. Anyone else?
Thank you so much for making this video! I got this really cool kit to make my own lip balm! I got the tubes, along with the small round containers. The tubes even came with their own stickers!! I have a ton of flavorings that I bought, when I was making rock candy on a stick!
Great recipes! Ive been doing mine with just coconut oil & the beeswax pellets😊 Love the tip about adding color, going to try that in next batch! theyre so much fun to make & give. hope youre having a great week friend, hugs
Great recipe!!! Awesome video..... I wasn't confused. May I suggest using a rubberband to secure the chapstick tubes together to prevent tilting or falling over in the fridge.
This is great! I have to make some of these as gifts. Need to pick up the containers and some beeswax. I have all the other ingredients. Thank you so much!
This is a great idea🤗 I work for a after school program and would love to Make this with my Kids. I would like to know How Many tubes can be made from the 2nd recipe.
super easy. i used my pyrex cup and placed it in the oven on low heat until everything melted. i was able to pour it cleanly in the tubes. the funny thing is, a little goes a long way! i easily filled 25 tubes! (i used a little more than you suggested though)
So, the essential oils are just for fragrance and do not do anything to affect the texture or consistency? What im getting at is that's if I left the essential oils out would I still get a substance that would work as a lip balm and maintain stick shape as long as I don't mash it or anything?
Thank you for this awesome video. Do you know if extracts are ok to use say 100% pure vanilla? I love vanilla lip balm. I just made my 1st batch of 🍊 flavored. We will see.
The wax is the base. You can try coconut oil, but coconut oil does melt in high temp. Try 100% natural Soy Wax. Or if you prefer, there is Vegan Wax, Carnauba and Candelilla Wax that can be used to also make lip balms.
I add a teaspoon of shea butter to mine (same sized batch) and cut the coconut oil amount to half a teaspoon. It’s so creamy and a natural sun blocker.
Kelly Barlow Creations Oooohhhh! It all makes sense now. I feel silly...I’ve never tasted my essential oils. I just assumed they had a flavor. 😂 I’m looking forward to making this someday when I need chapstick. Thanks for responding.

@@joylatham440 I noticed that the Simply Earth recipe (on the screen) called for 1 T. of honey - probably optional. I suspect she didn't use it because the water in the honey would make it hard to blend with the oils without an emulsifier. I just wanted to know for sure her reason. 😉 The flavor oils do add flavor to the balms, but there was nothing added for sweetness. 👍

As much chap stick as I use I need to make my own.

Luda Lange Are essential oils necessary or are they just for scent? Also, are these the oils you use(coconut and almond)?
I don't use essential oils. I made my own lip balms with whatever I had and they're still good. 😁
Beeswax, coconut oil, olive oil, vitamin E oil.
sweetangiegirl1 they are for the scent. they can be harsh on the skin if you are allergic or the harsher scents (peppermint, citruses, etc) may not be worth putting on your lips. the softer ones (sage, tea tree, etc) will be nicer to your lips. or you could add the flavoring and that might add a bit of scent, idk because i don’t use flavoring. also the almond and coconut oils are not essential oils, they are like moisturizers.
You can also put a rubber band around all of the chapstick containers for extra support from tipping over.
Great video. The liquid transfer tool is usually called a pipette
It’s crazy how I started my own business in quarantine just by making lotion bars making my own mask and soaps and lip balms it’s great
Love that they are all natural.....no chemicals. 💚
no she added lip stick from the dollar store

Definitely going to make theses I have everything apart from carrier oil thank you loving them xxx
I like grapefruit in my lip balm, but vanilla is good too.
Thanks Kelly such great ideas. I never would have thought to put some lipstick in it for some color. Can’t wait to try it out
I’ve Came across the perfect video! I love peppermint and it’s so hard to find one that fits with you! I can’t wait to try these myself.
Love this idea. I usually dont use chapsticks because they are usually to waxy but think I might give this a try
Can you use pigment to color them?
I know it's home made chap stick and not food, but it looks so yummy because they're flavored.
Can you use mica powder for color?

Thanks for the shout out Kelly!! This is so cool. I would love to try these, will have to get some oils. Have a great day!

Is there an alternative for the coconut oil? I have a severe allergy to coconut.
@Yasmeen Tilmann thank you!
Babassu oil. Sounds funny but it’s a real thing.
I don't wan to use beezwax or candle wax or Vaseline..any other alternative pls let me know..thanks..

Can I use SWEET ALMOND OIL instead? You didn't use the honey??? Thanks 😊
Yes
Will the coconut oil make it melt easy ?
Would you advice using food coloring instead of the lipstick?
will micro waving to warm it up work also?
Hello Kelly, Can we use honey instead of bee wax pellets?
Can you do it with just the coconut oil?
Great video! Will you share the link to the DIY label making process? I cant find it.
I can also put some color right?
Thank you for showing how to make these! 💖

how long do you let it cool before adding to containers?
What do you do with the left over from filing chapstick cases
Hi thanks for the great video. Can you pls give me a link for the DIY labeling that you mentioned at the end? I couldn’t find it. Thank you

because the essential oils don't have a flavor they just smell and I like it when my chapsticks have a flavor to them as well as a scent❣❣❣
