  • This award-winning documentary tells the story of red pandas in Nepal and the community-driven conservation efforts to save them.
Red Panda numbers are dangerously decreasing and there could be less than 2500 red pandas left in the wild. But an unconventional warrior has devoted her life to fight all forces that are against her and her beloved Red Pandas. The Firefox Guardian takes us on a mesmerizing journey through dense bamboo jungles in Nepal while exploring a special bond between the unique 'Firefoxes' and Menuka, a simple village girl. In this twelve-minute story, we follow Menuka, the first female forest guardian working with the Red Panda Network, as she tries to find a Panda juvenile to see if last season's wild Panda reproduction was successful. This film provides a unique window into the lives of the Forest Guardians and through their eyes, the life of the rarely documented endangered Red Pandas in the wild.
The film premiered in Bristol, United Kingdom and was shortlisted for a student BAFTA award in 2018. It also won the Best Student Documentary at the CMS Vatavaran Film Festival, Woodpecker Film Festival, International Wildlife Film Festival, and among several national and international awards, was a part of the World Wildlife Day Film Showcase by Jackson Wild, United Nations Environment Program and CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna).
In a Sanctuary Asia review, the Firefox Guardian makes it to the top three in an article titled Ten Wildlife Short Films by Indian Filmmakers. "Another filmmaker may have tried to capitalise on Menuka’s charm or the ‘star quality’ of the firefox, but Menon allows for the film to unfold gently and organically. Menon tells a succinct, moving story, and testament to her success is the fact that I was left wet-eyed by the film", writes the Commissioning Editor, Cara Tejpal.

    Excellent effort Gunjan.
Red Panda is so adorable and cute. Yes, those are the words which represent this elusive animal. Sikkim and Arunachal have them as well, though no major documentary has been made about those habitats. Sandesh Kadur covered clouded leopards of Meghalaya, would request you to do the same for Red Pandas.
On a side note, it was impressionable and fun to watch Red Panda in The Jungle Book.
    Your work is commendable.
    Strength to your efforts!
