    This is the first time in a long time that I have felt such incredible inspiration from crafting a video. I feel like I'm falling back in love with filmmaking and it is the most beautiful feeling. Thank you for being here and coming along with me on this incredible venture. I look forward to all that is to come.
    In this video I began crafting an Usnea tincture and I continued work on a burn salve made from cleaver rose, and calendula.

    Me: * sees you grab usnea off a branch *
    Me: * gets really excited because I’ve been taking a tincture of it for a sinus infection and it’s been working so much better than antibiotics *
    It’s such a wonderful lichen to work with. There’s truth in the words “whatever we need, nature has provided right outside our doorstep” because I was drawn to usnea right before I got sick and learned later that it’s great for sinus infections.

    I just wanted to add, thank you for mentioning that your concoctions don't always come out as planned. When you mentioned that something of yours molded, I almost had a moment of relief. I've had many things mold in the past and consider them quite devastating failures, for the lack of results or the waste of resources. But ultimately we can't learn if we do not fail! Somehow knowing that your stuff can mold too give me the permission to be human and accept that these things happen to everyone!

    I am an old swamp hag, collecting and processing herbal medicinal for years. I was mistakenly told by my old mentor (who has long since passed over to the other realms)that usnea did not grow in Michigan. Your video perked my curiosity, and in researching it, I now know that it does indeed grow here. It is found in the Thuja (cedar trees) bogs by the Great Lakes. Fortunately, I live very close to one of the best areas to find it, I just haven't been looking for it. I'm excited to add it to my list of foragable goodies!

    I love these videos about herbal remedies. I have made a few salves and oxymels in the past, but I haven't experimented with the amount of herbs for potency, different extraction methods (dry/fresh & hot/cold) or anything like that. So it's great get a deeper understanding of crafting those remedies.
    Also: The part you filmed in nature reminded me of Skyrim. (I haven't played since December, seeing this forrest and the waterfall kinda made me miss the game ;) )

    Being you make tinctures, there was some kind of outfit where you could buy straight ethanol.from, but I can't recall who it was, but it was cheaper for this kind of thing. There is those that sell moonshine stills. Where I think making alcohol distilled has been relaxed. Still need a federal.permit if you're wanting legal. Last I recall 200 gallons of beer, 100 gallons of wine was legal by itself, ethyl alcohol distilled, a fed permit was needed. Where you could make your alcohol for tinctures, which can make them taste better, or infusions. Not to mention extraction.
    I should mention I think it came in larger quantity,like 5 gallons, 10 and such

    Lovely video. Do you ever use weights (clean rock) to hold down the herbs in a tincture, like how you use them in fermenting?

    • @Kira_Martel
      @Kira_Martel 2 года назад

      Weights are really great for the situation she had with the usnea. When the weight/volume formula gets tricky with fluffy herbs like usnea, mullein, etc. the best solution is to chop it as finely as possible, then add the weight to the top to completely submerge the plant material in the menstruum. A clean rock is great, but they also make round glass weights specifically for mason jars, which are nice because they're not porous like rocks can be.
