I find this song sort of like the dad had cancer. Or at least that's how I want to find it because my dad died of cancer. I just love how it makes me remember him. And the gunshots are like the gunshots at his funeral.

Other musicians would have sung about the pain only but Owl City sings about Hope and "Life-is-going-on" as well. And taht's why I love him. Cause he always thinks about what he's writing and why he writes this

    • @Jenneth
      @Jenneth 4 года назад +14

He's such a unique musician because of this. You can absolutely hear the joy of his faith and the strength he gets from God in every song he writes, so even the sad ones are filled with that peace and hope all his fans crave. We just don't hear it anywhere else.

another good example of a song with a similar theme is "Redecorate" by Twenty One Pilots, but you're right there's not a lot of artists that really touch on this subject the way Adam did in this song. and that's a big part of why it's so special to me.

I first heard of Adam in 2009 but in 2012 I went through many family troubles and really started listening. Constantly telling myself that if he could sing such optimistic lyrics, then there was a reason for living. He's the only reason I'm still alive. My family, friends even my councillors don't help me. Adam does. He gets rid of my suicidal thoughts, my need to hurt myself, my need to die. Just for a little while. But that's far more than anything else has done. Adam doesn't have a clue how much of an impact he has on people, please help me get the message to him. He deserves to know how many people he has saved.

This song describes my best friend. Her dad was seriously abusive and eventually passed away, although he could have prevented it. One of the things she told me was that the last conversation they had was an argument, and she just wanted to say that she didn't mean it. That she was sorry. And not a year later, her mom shot herself. That alone is sad enough, but after that, my friend changed. She went from practically living at my house to not even talking to me. She finally came back after two years, and I cried after she left. Because she just wasn't the same person. I missed her the most when I was sitting next to her. I want to see her again, just to tell her goodbye.

This song, in my opinion, encourages forgiveness and moving forward despite the past. You should stay in the present to prepare for the unseen future. This "is just the beginning, it isn't the end" meaning you should stay strong and prepare for suffering that may occur in the future. I love this song because it brings out my emotions and so strongly that I can't help but shed tears.

I listen too alot of music. Everything from Fall Out Boy to 5SOS too Panic! At the Disco. But Owl City is special too me. When I was 11, I started high school, like most British kids, and I knew it wouldn't be a breeze. At the time I was obsessed with Owl City. I got bullied alot, more than alot, and everyday I'd go home, curl up in a ball and just listen too Adam sing. Mainly because his voice was the most comforting thing I'd ever heard. After a couple of months I started on one of Adam's old projects, Aquarium which led me into screamo music and I didn't listen too Owl City for about six months. however in may 2012 I attempted suicide. When i woke up in hospital I didn't speak for two days, I was too upset I hadn't died. However on the second day I just asked for my phone, I wouldn't tell them why, I just stayed silent until they gave it too me, and I plugged my headphones in pretended I was at home and listened too Adam singing again, and it gave me strength. Listening too him paint the world in such a beautiful way, it gave me hope for myself. And that's why I love Owl City, that's why i love Adam. because he's simply beautiful and he saved not just my life, but also my will.

Ive been listening to owl city since 2009. And his music never gave up on me. I got made fun of because people think im weird for listening to music like this because im black and i dont listen to rap. Ive always been judged for it. I could never quite fit in with other black people. always felt like an outsider. People dont understand that owl city has helped me through some tough things in life. Bouncing from one place to the next in foster care, wanting to kill myself because my existence never made me happy. anti depressent pills never worked, suicidal thoughts lingered over my head every night and the lost of my father stayed on my mind. I felt dead on the inside.. And i always saw myself crawl back to Adams music. He paints a picture in my head. Very beautiful and positive thoughts. Because of Adam, Im free. He healed me and so did God. I love his music and the way he portrays himself. Im so glad im here to tell my story because without his optimistically talented music, I would be gone.. Love you Adam

This song is so special to me. I had a Uncle that committed suicide when I was young and then his daughter committed suicide about a year ago. I wish I had found this video before my cousin took her life. I suffer from depression and I too have concerned taking my own life, I even bought a gun and I hate guns. But I chicken out with the gun pointed to my head. I was in therapy for weeks after that, my therapist wanted to put me in the hospital when I told her but I promised I would not hurt myself. You just don't know how bad depression is until you have experienced it yourself. Be safe and give your love ones a hug. You would be surprised the power a true hug really has on a person.

When I was 11 I walked into my dad's room because everyday around lunch time we'd eat lunch and watch TV. When I walked in I saw him take his last breath after over dosing. That image of his lifeless eyes still haunts me years later. I've thought about ending it multiple times but then I stop and think about how much pain he left behind and how much pain I'd leave behind on my new foster family. They've gotten attached and want to adopt me. I miss him everyday and talk to his ashes about how my day went. I always tell him about how school is going and how my social life is. If only he could have fought just a little bit longer. If only I could've seen what he was going through. Since that day I haven't failed to be there for someone who needs it. I have saved some lives because I refuse to let anyone feel alone

Adam Young, I started listening to you in 2009 or 2010. I was going through depression and suicidal thoughts. I wanted to end my life so many times. And I used to turn on your music and cry because during certain moments I couldn't take hearing anything else. I went to your concert in 2011 and I have loved you and your music so much. You'll never know how you had an impact on my life, but you did. You brought me closer with Christ and also opened up a world where music helped healed me. I can't thank you enough. You inspired me to write out my feelings instead of hurting myself and to keep my mind off of things. I love you Adam Young and I hope that your fans continue to show you love. I'll always be a meatball. :)

To all who accuse Adam of being hard on the dad for committing suicide, here's a theory: take the line "The role of a father he never deserved". Throughout the video, did you ever see a mother? I think this line is to be taken as "the role of a single father", which would mean that he didn't deserve to lose his wife (you can see one tombstone in the old cam footage, and two in the present). The title of this song is not only addressed to people like the daughter dealing with depression and anger, but also people like the father, who are dealing with the same emotions and contemplating suicide.
Btw, I shed a tear watching this.

I TOTALLY understand what you are saying but.....on the scale of raw emotion in vocals...that was pretty weak. Listen to "This Is The End (If You Want It)" by Relient K (the lead singer is ironically one of Adam's very close friends and songwriter companions).
You can literally hear his voice crack as he lets out a struggling scream. Tops the emotion here hands down. I love this song but all I'm saying is, the vocals don't come close to the "raw emotion" given by many other artists. Jason Brown

I wasn't prepared when I first heard this song, honestly, because I was listening to the album without paying attention while writing a short story and I like to listen to Owl city to focus....I actually had to stop and just stare blankly at the ceiling until it finished, because it both made my throat and burned my eyes with a thousand onions. I don't even really relate to the song, but the way Adam sings it somehow made it hit home like an arrow on the bullseye. I just put it on repeat and laid back in the bed for a few minutes.

This song really helped me deal with grief. This May I lost my grandmother. This was the first ever time I lost someone close to me and I took it really hard. The line "she wanted him back just to tell him goodbye" really speaks out to me. My grandmother lived in South Africa and was planning to visit this August. I haven't seen her in over 5 years and now I'll never get the chance to. I relate to this lyric so much, I just want her back, just for a moment, just to apologise for anything I've done to her, to tell her goodbye and that I love her.
I don't think I would've been able to deal with her loss as well as I did if it weren't for Adam's music. I hope he knows how much he and his music means to me, and I want to thank him. Only God knows where my mental state would be if it weren't for him. ❤️

    "This Isn't The End"
An eight year old girl had a panic attack
'Cause the father she loved left and never looked back
No longer the hero she counted on
He told her he loved her and then he was gone
She tried to look happy in front of her friends
But knew that she'd never feel normal again
She fought back the tears as they filled her eyes
And wanted him back just to tell him goodbye
    When the rain falls down
    When it all turns around
    When the light goes out
    This isn't the end
Her dad was a good guy that everyone liked
But nobody knew he was dying inside
He promised his family he'd be alright
And then with a gunshot he left them behind
    When the rain falls down
    When it all turns around
    When the light goes out
    This isn't the end
    When the rain falls down
    When it all turns around
    When the light goes out
    This isn't the end, no.
The role of a father he never deserved
He abandoned his daughter and never returned
And over the years though the pain was real
She finally forgave him and started to heal
How close is the ending, well, nobody knows
The future's a mystery and anything goes
Love is confusing and life is hard
You fight to survive 'cause you made it this far
It's all too astounding to comprehend
It's just the beginning this isn't the end
It's just the beginning this isn't the end

when I first heard this song, the idea of forgiveness at the end of this song was strange. How could she forgive him for what he did? But as time went on, I learned that forgiveness isn't what most people think it is. It isn't about excusing something. It isn't about letting the person that hurt you go, it's about setting yourself free. Forgiveness releases the weight that holds you down. The weight of resentment and pain. Thanks for helping me learn that, Adam.

What I love about owl city is that he compares people that hold him dearly (in songs) with art and things he love, this is something mainstream artists has just started doing and it is not even comparable to the way Adam does it, the rest of the mainstream ones are usually cheesy and unoriginal not using a single metaphor.

I felt like crying :( I like how Owl City tells stories through his songs and he can make you feel happy or sad or even give you courage.

This song came on my youtube mix. I had never heard it before, and if you had told me that somehow Adam had found some news article written on my dad and wrote this song based off it, I would have believed you. I was eight when he committed suicide, and, being a trans man, I would have been written as his eldest daughter at the time. His last words to me were that he loved me. Later, I changed my name to Rain ("...when the rain falls down..."). I can't believe how much I relate to this song, both in how it felt to lose him then, and how it feels now, healing and forgiving him and having had his depression passed down to me, trying not to become him and "fighting to survive because I've made it this far". Randomly discovering this song really does feel like one of those moments where the universe looks down on you and gently places something monumental to you in your hands.

"Her Dad was a good guy that everyone liked,
but nobody knew he was dying inside.
He promised his family they'd be alright,
and then with a gunshot he left them behind."
That last line hit me right in the heart.

My uncle passed away just this morning, i don't knew him so much, but this last month we were more close of him.
He had a conflictive relation with his only daugther, and just like the lyrics of this video, she wasn't forgave him yet. Now, i only hope change of mind and left the past behind.
This song it's very sad but strong at the same time. I didn't can't hold the tears, and i usually consider myself as a cold man.
I never expected find this song, i was eating now when i heard the words of the singer at the restaurant. It touched me a lot.
Rest in peace now, uncle. Just fly. I will remember you always

This song will stay close to my heart till I die. It helps me keep going. My sister was kidnapped on the day of my other sister's birthday back when I was on my 2nd grade. I was too young to learn that people come and go. I was always known as the brother of the missing girl, it was hard to be reminded every time someone asks about her. Growing up not understanding what's happening and seeing my mom cry every night not knowing how to help was my childhood. Seeing my sister tear up everytime her birthday comes. We still haven't seen our sister, but the case is still ongoing. I'm now 21 years old and the pain is still here, still getting more painful. It sucks but we can't even talk about it in our family, cause it still hurts. I've been listening to this song every now and then since 2014.
The last few lines kept me going, it's just the beginning, this isn't the end.

I first stumbled upon this song when I was 14/15 after my dad had committed suicide and it made me very angry because I thought this song was unrealistic, ignorant and sugar coated and that I could never forgive my dad but now 3 years later I'm starting to see the lyrics becoming more and more true by the year and I want all of you who are going through the same thing to know that time heals. Yes I will never be the same person I was before but it does get better.

its SKREED Not quite, almost though. The lines, "The role of a Father he never deserved, He abandoned his daughter and never returned." Is saying, it isn't very fatherly to leave your daughter to fend for herself. This verse is emulating the hate the daughter might have felt, like wishing that her father wasn't her father. At the end of the verse, "She finally forgave him, and started to heal." reflects her change of heart.
