This is an inexpensive and practical way to build a screen and frame but I have learned from experience to either glue or screw all the joints especial if you are planning an out door use and also for out doors out safety ropes from the top corners to slid anchors or heavy weights. P.S. I work at a drive in with the states largest screen and we also have a 16 foot solid surface screen for special events such as the children drive in concept you mentioned.
2" pipes is so overkill, it works with 3/4 or 1" which is half the price and not nearly as heavy or space used to store...and fabric tape works so much better than safety pins?
I have to disagree with you on the pipe thickness. I can speak from experience that 3/4" pipe is very wobbly even without any material on it. I bought it thinking I'd save some money but the build is way too weak.

(9) 4 foot PVC Pipes

You can get a real projector screen material for less than a king size bed sheet set and, as always, is Soo much better! $15 - $20 on eBay
