- How to install an oval chain ring with SRAM direct mount. I swapped my 32 tooth round chainring for an Absolute Black 32 tooth oval chainring. It's pretty easy but you want to be sure to do it correctly. Now's a great time to check the bottom bracket bearings and the rest of the drive train. My chain was sticky so I installed a new one. One note: Be sure to buy the correct offset for whether your bike is boost rear or not.
Here's a link to the test ride comparing this chainring to the old round one on the same bike, same trail a few days apart. The results were UNBELIEVABLE! You gotta see this! • Oval chain ring MTB Te...

Sounds like Tom Green narrating this
So I had to go back and listen to my recorded voice (since no one ACTUALLY sounds like they think) and then Tom's. Aside from the Canadian lilt I hear similarities. I never realized just how smooth, sexy, and relaxing Tom Green's voice really is 😅
@@TrailBreaker so sexy
thanks for this video - great content - very helpful!
@Ibrahim Ace scam
Great tutorial, no unneccessary long talking just clear instructions with detail where it's required. Successfully installed mine this afternoon and I'm very happy with it :)
Ok finally just got mine after a crazy long back order. Love this video on how to install. Thank you again.
Enjoy it! Yeah it took me 8 weeks to get some tires. CRAZY!
You should show the proper orientation of the oval chainring for those converting from circle rings. As it's not the same mount.
There is no way to get it wrong this is a sram dub direct mount only one way it will fit. not like the four bolt mounts like the 104 bcd and the 64 bcd etc. those do have an orientation mark.
Thanks for this. Ordered one last night and it's due tomorrow. Can't wait to try it out!
Hope you enjoy it!
Nice vid, good detailed instructions unlike so many who skip the details.
pro mod steve 👍 I like details lol
Does the chain ring only fit one way? I’m guessing the chainring has to be install a curtain way to take advantage of the pedal stroke inline with the crank arm...
Great video easy to understand!
Yes only one way
Thanks! Yes. There are 3 bolts on the back of the chain ring and you can't do it wrong.
Got my Wolf Tooth elliptical chain ring and ready to install now! Thanks for the video!
You won't be disappointed! Thanks for watching👊
My Chisel has a 32 round. Do I have to go for a 32 oval or for a 34 oval? When you change the chainring (round to oval) you must go two teeth up or two teeth down?
Nice work 🤘 I missed this one too but I'm here now 😂
👊
Thanks for this video.
Just wondering, am currently planning to try replacing my 32t round chainring to a 32t oval chainring. The bike in the video is a full suspension bike, and it seems that the chain didn't need replacement. Will there be a difference, when it comes to the chain length, for a hard tail bike?
Thanks!
For SS you’ll need a spring type chain tensioner since the chain will be too loose for half of the pedal stroke. If you swap 32t round for 32t oval the chain is fine
@@TrailBreaker my current set up is a 1x12 speed trail bike with a chainguard (CGH-04) that, as the item says, can accommodate 32t to 38t chainrings.
So, I don't need to worry about needing a new chain installation, similar to your video?
Thanks a lot for this!
No if your chain was the correct length for you're 32 round it will be fine with the oval the derailleur will take up the slight difference. Three different ovals and never had to change chain length
good video.. gonna install mine oval in few hours..))
Good luck! Hope it went well and you like it👊
Hey hey! Do you mind mentioning the actual durability of this chainring? Does it spare a good amount of miles or does it die sooner rather sooner than expected?
I’ve had one on my SB130LR for two years and it’s in perfect shape after climbing and descending over 1,500 solid miles in the San Juans of Durango and the single tracks of Moab. Couldn’t be happier with mine and adding one to my hardtail today.
I am about to install this very oval. I have a chain guide / bash guard currently on my bike, will this need adjusted at all with the addition of the oval ? Nice video.
You man need to slightly adjust the chain guide to allow for the small difference in the shape of the chain ring but should be fine 👍🏻
Are the sram and shimano “direct mount” the same mount or a different mount specific to each brand?
If I get this chainring what crank arms would I have to get can u put a link to what cranks would fit in this
I have the same bike but 2015 model. Do you have a part number for the chain ring? I currently run an NX crank with 32t
Great video I’m looking at buying one for my fat bike and I’m worried about the wear of the rear derailleur 🥶 does ur derailleur move every peddle stroke 🤔
A little but but unless you're riding on the road the derailleur is moving constantly anyway, not to mention all the shifts.
Nice video. Thanks for the instructions. I'm strongly considering oval. 🤙🤙
I can’t imagine you NOT liking the change. I think it’s the best bank for the buck👊🏻 #notsponsored
Is the 32t oval chainring bigger than the round one (diameter)?
Thanks
It is both a little smaller and a little bigger. At the elongated part a bit bigger and the rest a touch smaller. In total it sort of evens out. You should not need to mess with chain length.
If you put an oval chainring that is the same tooth number as the round chainring, do you need to adjust the length of the chain?
No. Easy swap 😊
Hi. I bought a chainring and installed it. It is occasionally rubbing against the rear frame. Would this cause damage to the bike. Or am I fine to ride like this?
That depends. Is the frame aluminum or carbon? Al...no big deal. You could even fle a little and touch up the paint. Carbon...not good.
The chain keeps falling out of the crank on any gear. Please suggest a fix. Thanks
Check your chain length first. Easiest way is to disconnect it and run it around the biggest cog and the chain ring bypassing the derailleur. Proper length is when it just meets plus 2 links. Next check your derailleur clutch. It's the internal spring that pulls the bottom jockey wheel up and keeps tension on the chain. Is your chain ring worn? Is it a narrow-wide design?
After this, you can always add a chain guide to keep it on. Here's a link to a video I did ruclips.net/video/LmiNtGreTEM/видео.html Good luck!
Since it is oval, does it matter how the chainring is aligned with the crank?
It can’t be installed incorrectly.
Installing the same to the same bike but newer this week....
Awesome! Enjoy 👊👍
Great video, will be referring to this when changing mine. Ps. Love this music, whats it from?
Thanks! It's just a sample for the free music library YT provides creators to avoid copywrite issues. I like it too 😀
@@TrailBreaker the track reminds me of The Police De Dododo De Dadada
If your going from a normal 32t to a 32t oval is there any adjustments to the chain?
Nope
Did you have to add any links to your chain? Did you go from a smaller round to a larger oval?
Alex Logan no. 32 to 32.
@@TrailBreaker okay I'm going from a 30round to a 32oval ive had some people say yes I will have to get a new chain and others say no I won't.
Alex Logan Going from a 30t round to 32t oval might need an extra link. When I changed from a 32round to a 30t oval I did have to remove a link. Swap it and see if the derailleur is too stretched in the big cog. Good luck👊🏻
@@TrailBreaker This is the exact information I was looking for. I'm going from 32t round to 30t oval. Thank you!
Have you ever tried an oval chainring? Do you think it’s just hype?
I want an oval chainring for my jump bike with I have to make my chain longer or can it stay the same lenth
If it's the same # of teeth, no change. However, if it's single speed you'll need to add a chain tensioner to keep it from dropping when the chain ring is in the narrow direction
@@TrailBreaker but Matt Jones runs a oval on his jump bike and doesn’t have a chain tenst
Is your bubbles side of the ring facing out ?
it only goes on 1 way
Hi, chain need to be on the middle of the cassette?
Nope. works fine in all gears
Would you order new dust seals? My bike is 9 years old.
Not unless they're cracked. Just check those bearings and keep a thin layer of grease between the bearing and the dust seal to help keep out water and grit
It’s not necessary to resize the chain?
Not if you go back with the same # of teeth
Should I readjust the b gap with the oval chainring?
Shouldn't need to unless you go with smaller ring and need to shorten the chain
What grease
I just use an all-purpose grease
yea guys check your offset, once you already bought ur chainring and laid it on the desk xD so you can do what about it?
Did you adjust your chain length for the oval ring??
No since I swapped 32 round for a 32 oval
Which tools did you use to remove the crank bolt?
Jesus Ciriaco 8mm hex. It pushes against the 10mm cap bolt pushing the crank arm off
Does it matter how you put the new chain ring on- which way the oval is
Set?
Victor Rafa Absolutely! For direct mount chainrings you can’t put it on wrong. For 4-bolt chainrings there is a little triangle printed on the chainring that you place under the crank arm. When installed correctly the chain is tallest when the crank arm is at 3 o’clock
Trail Breaker thank you. This video came at the perfect time. I just ordered one last week.
@@victorrafa6540 have you installed the oval chainring? Thoughts..
Weekend Mountain Biker wish I have by now. Been on back order for 4 weeks now 😢
@@victorrafa6540 😵
Chain length was okay.?
Yes since I replaced a 32t round with a 32t oval. On my other bike I was forced to go from a 32t round to 30t oval and needed to remove 2 links.
Trail Breaker I want to go from 34t round to 32t oval how many links should remove?
@@TrailBreaker In another reply you mentioned removing one link. Can you clarify one or two? Thank you.
is the oval chainring not add up wear in your rd?
I can’t imagine the slight movement from the oval is anything compared to the bouncing on the trail😊
although...anyways until bike parts is always available in the market it doesn't really matter🙄🙄🙄🤭🤭
