as much as i love The Bunnymen Ian McCulloch does my head in he's so up himself! where as you could see Will down the local pub and have a chat with him totally unpretentious
Mac isn’t as pretentious as he seems in interviews. He’s had chats in local pubs with people, I’ve seen it in comments, because apart from his career he’s a normal man and he knows it. And he’s a good man. Read some more interviews with him, you’ll see the true part of who he is isn’t who he seems to be.
But you can't see yourself going round Mac's house for a nice cup of tea? Oh well. You apologised so you are forgiven. I'm sure he wouldn't have taken offence anyway. Seems like a grounded reflexive kind of person here. Bit in his own little world but that's why he's an artist. Doesn't make him pretentious or up himself. I don't see any of that.
They were a great band for the first 4 records but after Ocean Rain didn't really produce anything that was inventive. Just recycling old ideas. Evergreen and Siberia had moments but lacked the cohesion of their best works. Mac's overinflated ego didn't help either, you can't just fall back on your laurels, you must create if you wanna have longevity. Heaven Up Here is their best album imo. What a masterpiece. Still today it's the best post punk album ever made. Nothing comes close.
I agree....The first three(Crocodiles; Heaven Up Here; Porcopine)...not a SINGLE mediocre tune in the batch! Ocean Rain: A-; 7 of 9 were GREAT. Every other album had a few moments...but much less often after Pete's Death.
The album with Lips Like Sugar was solid, but everything went grunge and noise rock by the late 80's. Bunnymen were too melodic and steaightforword- like the Sniths and INXS to last through the decade. The only similar band to keep its sound and make it through was the Cure.Imagine if Duran Duran tried going grunge or hip hop- they would have broken up too. If they could have made it to Britpop, they may have lasted.
To an extent, but that grunge sound was more of an american thing at that time. In Britain in the late 80's everything was moving towards acid house and in rock the Manchester "baggy' sound which was pretty melodic. maybe the bunnymen just didn't really work with Ecstasy......
I'll tell you what happened ... after Ocean Rain the music just became weak pap and pretty vanilla - Lips like Sugar was crap. I remember buying the records after Ocean Rain and couldn't understand where the vibe had gone - the band just gave up and died basically.
The last great rock star, nobody compares.
....STILL FOOKIN' ADORE that 80-83 period, though. Their music STILL HAUNTS me!...and will continue to do so 'til I die.
"At the end of the day I think I prefer...the dreams that were in the tree"....
Great post..
Ian is a genius.
The poor audio quality adds to the dream of Ian's narrative.
This is a gem. Hope Ian gets to see this ans see how far he has fallen and then just try again at the very least...
I love this man so much, great footage! Thanks for uploading :)
Back then, you could even understand him when he spoke.
Hehe. I've clearly got a problem, cos I can understand him perfectly, even nowadays. Course, I listen to him talk than is probably healthy! XD
Zohara Wolf Just make sure you don't any words out. ;-)
Christine Marie Just make sure that what? (Sorry, I just woke up lol)
Zohara Wolf Never mind, I was just teasing you because you appear to have left a word out of your post.
+Christine Marie Oh! Heh, look at me, I'm super observant! XD No worries. :3
Eventually the band did reform . A timepiece.

@@Archiv3sofpa1n Ok, maybe i was wrong i admit it, i don't know him
I think you mean "into himself" as oppose to "up himself", there's a difference.
But you can't see yourself going round Mac's house for a nice cup of tea?

You either get him or you dont but this guy was right up there with the best of them. One of the Crucial 3 :))
heartbreaking
I loved Mysterio. When I met Ian, I brought my copy for him to sign, and he was moody that night, but he took a picture with me. Still moody though :)
god bless you ian
'cos you have to '
my mantra on the new year
( albeit 10 years on ..)
bless you
Somehow, when pete died, they lost more than a unique drummer. Something very special in the band's chemistry was gone.
Pete Best?
@@JohnconnoPete 'the ' Best.😊
Thank you, loved it, Ian is godly :)
sheer genius

Agreed
Too right Les and Pete were fed up with Ian starting then..
100% agree.

Geez, he's quite tall!
I can relate about Rio de Janiero, Brazil is and has an amazing
vibe. Book your flight now, its the ideal trip. :)
Mr.lips
This old videos where they play music over the interview… It makes it very hard to hear what he’s saying 👂

Duran were always great, who cares if it's 'popular'?
He said 'er, it's a bit like Freddy and the Dreamers to me, without Freddy'.
19:54 what does he say? Something like 'I'm gonna make a cup of tea or I'm gonna cry right now?' :S
Is it not obvious. He made a cup of tea.
"Think I'll make a cup of tea while I explain that, you know."
Open with Broke My Neck...pretty fucking good start!
what was the last line??? when Ian answered the question about the bunnymen continueing without him....did anyone understand it???? help!
❤
What song/jam are they playing at 11:40? Does it have a name?
I'll tell you what happened ... after Ocean Rain the music just became weak pap and pretty vanilla - Lips like Sugar was crap. I remember buying the records after Ocean Rain and couldn't understand where the vibe had gone - the band just gave up and died basically.
I agree. They completed that narrative arc that began with their first album.
Lost in his own mystique (sigh)
Lost up his own arse.
Mystique for men, made from a tree in Liverpool.
I see where Oasis got their inflated sense of quality.
Lmao
Case closed
Drugs have ruined Ian...
Copey slipped them some bad voodoo Man.
Pete Wylie sang " you can't put your arms around a memory "....oops Ian can.
