One of the things I regret about joining the studygram community is the money I spent on things I haven't used. I may have spent close to a thousand dollars on pens and stationery that I rarely use. It's very upsetting and I'm glad others with the same problem are donating and completely stopping further purchases.

you have no idea how much i appreciate you talking about consumerism in the study/journal community. i have an extensive amount of washi tape i just don’t use anymore. most of the time when im making a purchase i think “how much did this cost to make” which makes me actively think if the labour behind the product was ethical.
you briefly mentioned that you gave away a pen, im assuming to a friend, but maybe giving away to subscribers might be a potential option? if opening a patreon to help with that id be happy to support through there. i know a lot of people can’t access a lot of the stationery you feature so maybe that’s where the stationery you want to try for yourself and the channel can go?

I love fountain pens, they are my go to pen. What I would recommend is to not to press to hard on your fountain pen. a good fountain pen is supposed to write under it's own weight. as a ballpoint pen / gel pen user you are used to press on your pen, but when you do that with a fountain pen it gets scratchy. With the paper issue it's a hit or miss, I use the cheapest notebooks and sometimes they are good and sometimes not. What helps though is that I live in Europe so fountain pens are common. Also using a finer tip makes writing on cheap paper easier. But what I would like to recommend is a refillable rollerball. This is a rollerball pen that uses fountain pen ink, so you can use bottled ink to refill them. Which means you can use all the colors in the world. And you can reuse them for years, so they are like fountain pen a lot cheaper than gel pens. Also you don't have to buy an expensive one, somehow people in America think that fountain pens have to be expensive. You can get a good one for under ten bucks. Same goes for cleaning your fountain pens, you can but you don't have to. I don't know anyone who cleans their fountain pens. you only clean them if you don't use them for a long time or if you change ink colors

I really relate to you asking yourself why you want something and saying "I don't know!!" because I used to be so bad at impulse buying stationery, but just taking the time to ask myself why I want it has really helped me to take a step back and look at my buying habits. The pentel energel 0.5 in black is my all time favorite pen and I noticed that, even with a pencil case full of other pens, I always reach for it. So why do I think I need to buy any other black gel pens?! I thought that influencers on social media only really influence buying things like clothes and makeup, but the influence from study community is so strong and gets to me in a way I never even realized! I think too easily the answer to "why should I buy this?" becomes "why not?" and we make decisions without fully thinking them through.

Sarasa R and uniball one review below:
I've tried the sarasa R and it wasn't that good. The ink was indeed more vivid than the normal ones, however the ink was also more prone to ghosting (it had kinda serious ghosting even on campus paper) and it's not water resistant, unlike the normal ones. The blue also wasn't as pretty as the old colour in my opinion.
The uni ball one seems better. I've had 2 0.38 ones of those, a blue one and a forest green (?) one but the blue one was slightly skippy and the green one just skips all the time even right after purchase without even dropping it for once. But then my friends also have signo one but never complained about them so I think maybe I just got two faulty ones. The black ones are Def much more worth it if you are looking for darker ink cuz the difference in the ink colour of the other ones really isnt that big

haha, i found myself buying the TWSBI diamond recently and it is soooo worth it! i don't even use fountain pens for notetaking but just holding this one is inspiring me to just write more things down because of how pleasant an experience it is. it's the same style as the ECO but it has interchangeable nibs so you can use the same pen for multiple sizes~ much better than having like five each for different uses.
i realize this probably isn't helping your no-buy thing buuut hey if you find yourself too tempted and want an even better eco-friendly version, love me my twsbi diamond xD

    - I appreciate your sense of humor 😂 “...and I’m an anthropology major!”
    - I did get the Sarasa R pens this year (because the standard Sarasa pens are my perfect pen!) but was actually a little disappointed - they weren’t as smooth, it felt like I had to press harder to write, and my hand would get sore after writing for a while. The ink also shows through the paper more than the standard ones. I’d recommend, if you’re still thinking about them in 2022, just picking a couple to try first (personally, the red, light green, and blue gray were my favorites).
    - Really admire you for sticking out your no-buy this whole year! Thanks for the updates.

seo! i love fountain pens too, but i can't stand the scratchy nib too (and honestly it takes too much effort to write nicely tbh). i have accepted that i will never be a keen user of fountain pens.... WITH TRADITIONAL NIBS!!! I love the look and feel of kaweco fountain pens and i bought one!!! the catch is, i bought one with a ballpoint. it works exactly like a fountain pen where you can use a refillable ink tank and load different inks. i think other brands have interchangable nibs too. also, i get that fountain pens are so expensive so like its honestly not wise to buy one every month because they last a long time. I can't remember when i bought mine but it has been quite a while and it's still on its first ink catridge, granted i only use it in my planner. and i think its ok to buy yourself a fountain pen for a special occasion! I think maybe just for study many stationary is not essential I totally understand. But some of them are very helpful in art creating. So as a design major and sketching person I’m actually owning more stationary than what study normally requires. I'm a uni student and use my fountain pens religiously! Got something like 25 pens inked (so not exactly minimalist or eco-friendly at this point) and I use them all.
Something being scratchy is mostly a QC issue, I've used Lamy safaris that were a bit scratchy and ones that were very smooth, Lamy makes their own nibs. If you try a TWSBI eco I will say they use Jowo nibs and are very well regarded!
I use Rhodia and Oxford notebooks for uni. Some inks are better for meh paper than others too and finer nibs help also!

Nooo, not the fountain pens… 😣
But, indeed… they do depend on several different factors in order to work well - especially the paper, which needs to be FP-friendly (Rhodia, Clairefontaine, Tomoe River, etc.) 😔
However, if you're stuck with ordinary paper, there are some good inks that'll resist feathering and especially bleedthrough on regular notebooks - Jet Pens and Goulet Pens have videos on those.

As someone who had to write in fountain pen for four years of middle school, I'm telling you, they're not worth it. You need special paper so the ink doesn't smear, you can't erase your mistakes properly and you always need to carry ink cartridges or an ink bottle with you, because these bad bois run out of ink at the speed of Hussain Bolt.

Seo, you have inspired me to buy less stationery. I have been using the same pentel energel refills in the same pen body for almost a year. I recently bought the silver metal version of the pentel energel and it will hopefully last for years.
