In 82 I was in CH46 flying off the Tripoly in the Indian Ocean. We had a hydraulic failure and we were losing altitude. We turned back to the ship but it didn't look like we were going to make it. I immediately thought of my training on escaping a helo in the water. I'm not gonna say I was ready for it but I was determined I wasn't going down with the bird. I just said "This is not the day I die. This is not the way I die." Luckily we made it back to the ship and cleared the edge of the flight deck by about a foot.

Early in my career I met a retired Marine Corps Colonel that was at Iwo Jima as a private and served in Korea and Viet Nam. The advice he gave all of us was, trust your training.

Great point! RANGER training made me an excellent plumber which requires creative thinking, physical stamina and helped me train some of the next generation of tradesmen. Staying safe in a fluid and hazardous environment was the main thing they needed to learn because situational awareness is no longer taught to our youth on average.

Train to Fight, Fight to Win, Win to Attain the Victory. Whether Infantry Patrolling, Ranger Ruck Marching, SEAL MFF( HAHO / HALO ) OPS, or Marine Raider DA , use that constant, consistent, continuous training and experience by Your Instructor Cadre , to " improve Your Fighting Position" , and , accomplish the Mission.

I made two static line parachute jumps back when I was a young police officer..mainly due to peer pressure from a colleague. I am afraid of heights..but I wanted to make myself do something I was scared of doing. After the jumps I understood why paratroopers feel they are elite. Once the chute opened it was super exciting. Well worth the terror of getting out that door

Good stuff! Can’t agree more with Coch on train to a higher level than you will need. Also, stay cool, calm, and collected as you work through problems. During Fire Dept. worst-case scenario survival training I used to tell my guys - never give up! If you are going to die, die trying not to die. Lastly, no one is ever done training. The moment you think you know it all you become dangerous - and not in the good way. 😉

  • @paulwilson8672

Dorr your comment about jumping out of planes because your buddies were doing it made me think of the soldiers in the Civil War. Most of the solders in the unit came from the same hometown. The military did this for several reasons, but one of them was it made it harder to run away in the fight because you didn't want to be called a cowered back home, if you made it back home. Just like you didn't want to be called that P word. I think of those solders that were in Pickets Charge. You guys have done crazy stuff in your training, but nothing like that. Sorry, I don't think like a normal person.

I know several skygods, with 1k+ skydiving and several hundred MFF jumps. Everyone one of them said that jumping off of the New River Gorge bridge in WV on Bridge Day was hands down the hardest jump that they have ever done. Not for the technical skills required, but it was mainly all on them to step off of that platform.
