As a 72-year old Icelandic local I was a bit taken aback by your observation about the "skammdegi" (lit. "short days") having a calming effect on you, but it did not take much reflection to realize you are absolutely correct - this time of year DOES have that effect on me as well, I'm just so used to it that I never really paid it any attention.

I’m in the middle of.Canada (Winnipeg, Manitoba). The sun rose today at 8:24 and set at 4:46. We’ve already added about 20 minutes of daylight or so. It’s probably good that we have long nights the winter and long days in the summer; it would have made my Icelandic ancestors feel a little more at home while they went through hell to survive! But they were tough !

NYC because of it's location actually has quite a lot of winter daylight & sunlight hours compared to many other cities worldwide.
Whereas here in Scotland (and the UK) our winters are gloomy mostly grey skies. And gets dark early by only 4pm.
Genetics probably play a big part why some people don't get affected as much mood and energy wise by living in places with low daylight/sunlight hours.

The people are lovey, great landscapes, great cafes, terrific restaurants, no pollution, barely any traffic and no violence or drunks everywhere. What is the UK getting so wrong. I couldn’t believe how laid back the people are in Iceland too. Even the bus drivers will do anything to help you.

Try not to start your day with coffee that soon if you can avoid it, it might be the reason you are crashing early in the nighttime.
I've heard 90 minutes after waking up is the least amount of time you should abstain from coffee.
I've tried it now for a couple of weeks and it's helping me from passing out when I stumble inside the door from work and I'm a heavy coffee drinker.

4:12 as someone from the UK, I would actually say that's not a very short amount of sunlight. In the UK, for the past week or so, we got no sunlight apart from around 9am-3pm. Which isn't as low as there, but the sun doesn't really shine or become bright in the winter, which is nice because I don't like the sun that much.

LOVE your channel!!! We are just about to finish our 12 day loop of the country. I devoured many of your videos before our trip and they were very helpful. It has been much better trip than we even expected - and we had high expectations! A couple of thought for future videos. Restaurants were a bit of culture shock. It took us a while to realize that even fine dining restaurants expect you to go pay at the front. Also, we have yet to be shown our bill before we pay. Most of the places we ate would seat us, and then not approach our table until we flagged them down, and that was often 10 minutes or so. This meant that we couldn’t order a drink to have before dinner. Once we understood, it was fine. But it took a while to realize the pattern (we are slow)
We have been surprised by how many businesses are closed for the winter without any notice on social media or their own website. We have also been surprised how many business are closed for one day of the week.
We LOVED our winter trip. It felt like we had the whole country to ourselves!
You were so helpful in planning our trip.
    Thanks!

And thank you for your feedback regarding restaurant culture/expectations as well as business closures in Iceland, I will certainly add these things to my list of future content! As good as Google Maps and Wi-Fi signal is around the country, I think Iceland is still behind in using the internet and has some adjusting to do when it comes to catering to tourists and their expectations. I know that many businesses in the US, particularly retail, are open everyday and at the very least use Facebook or their website to post about closing times. Despite the lack of preparation for these things, if you'd be willing, I'd really appreciate a review on my Google page (g.page/r/CcNakSXbieLcEB0/review)! Thanks again for watching!

Yes, the roads to Hengifoss are open year round (DO NOT take the shortcut on 95 at that time of year) but you'll need to keep a close eye on the road conditions at road.is ~ You MUST have crampons and be prepared for the trail to be icy & snowy - you may not be able to make it all the way to the waterfall but should be able to get to the main viewing platform. I also recommend going in the middle of the day so that the sunshine, if any, can help with snow and ice melt.
