It's never explicitly said in the show, so not a spoiler; in the Fire Nation the top knot is a symbol of a person's honor. Normally it would only be cut after losing an Agni Kai or otherwise deeply disgracing one's family. Here it symbolized them acknowledging that there is no going home now.

Pretty sure that even after an agni kai it wouldn't be cut (except in extreme cases). However the loser would sometimes shave parts or all of the hair except the topknot to show humility, that's why Zuko has his hair like that after losing the one with his father.

Ehhhhh, cutting off their hair is giving up their status, which is true for the history of....well a lot of places in asia. Not really a spoiler but a nod to the culture the Fire Nation is based on. I know it's supposed to be based in japan, but I have been watching a lot of C-Dramas where any mention of cutting off hair is like cutting off a limb horrifying. Lots of crying, cursing and, well, drama

Azula has blue flames for her firebending. It’s the hottest fire. But she also knows lightening bending. The crackling, charging thing is lightening while the blue flame is her normal fire attack. She’s so good that her fire is hotter than most others.

Also not sure if you missed it or not, but this wasn't Omashu, it's an Earth Kingdom base near Omashu.
Also the top knot in Japan was usually considered reserved for nobility in the feudal era, cutting it off is signalling them losing their nobility since they're both now branded as traitors. But cutting the hair can also mean starting a new life in Asian culture.

You’re completely right, but I just wanna add that After becoming fugitives, Zuko and Iroh cut off their top-knots and threw them into a creek to symbolize their rejection of their homeland and the beginning of their true exile. And the firebending master Jeong Jeong also wore a top-knot, as shown on his wanted poster.

ohhhh, first sign of azula's deeply calculating ways. Right then was an especially vulnerable time for Zuko, being the three year anniversary since he left home. Best time for her to strike and catch him at his most desperate to return and to have his father acknowledge him in any way besides burning a scar into his face. And the crazy part is…..Azula didn’t lie. Ozai did regret banishing him because of how much Zuko disgraced the name by failing to catch the Avatar and wanted him home to hide him under the rug so to speak

In feudal Japan, the topknot was a symbol of a samurai's loyalty to his lord. Cutting off the topknot signifies the cutting ties with the lord, becoming lordless (leaving the lord's service either by choice, or by the lord's death). Even though Zuko is still pursuing the Avatar in the hopes of regaining his honor, Zuko and Iroh have renounced their ties to the Fire Nation, but removing the topknots will also help them disguise their true identities, at least a little.

  • @IamnotJohnFord

As others have said, the topknot is a symbol of status and/or family. So, cutting it off is like disowning your family, or being disowned. I'm surprised that Ozai didn't make Zuko cut his off when he banished him. But, I guess it was more darkly fun to let him keep it while sending him on a quest to find someone that has been missing for 100 years. A clean cut, pun intended, would have been a show of mercy rather than sending him on a fool's errand with no likely prize.
Aang, in the Avatar state, can call on the experiences of his past lives. So, he can bend any bendable element during that time. That's why he was able to bend water in episode #2 and earth in this episode even though he doesn't know how. It's kind of like Hulk being able to protect Bruce Banner in times of stress, but Banner not being able to remember much of what Hulk did or how.

General Fung treating Aang like a weapon is harsh since Aang is just a 12 year old kid, but you have to remember that it’s taking place in a century old war.
Desperate times call for desperate measures, I guess?

I’m eastern Asian cultures, the cutting of one’s hair represents that the person has been banished or rejected from their own homeland. Where as zuko had a chance to come before, he is now permanently rejected by his father.

You were right the first time... that was blue fire, not lightning....
You can tell the difference because lightning requires time to charge...
She has to do the circular motion before she can generate lightning...
Also... lightning comes with the crackling sound and looks different from the blue fire...
