Me too and today I received a notice that they revoked me from partner's program because so called my stories are not true. I wrote about my own personal life! My own experiences at the job etc.
I think it's a great place to get started. Im working my way up to $15/ day. The goal is to reach $100 a day by November now that i have a better idea of what works well on the platform-i think
It is a great place to get started but don't get discouraged if you don't hit those numbers right away ... $100/day is very difficult on Medium and takes time
Honestly, things have gotten better for me since the changes. Last month was the best with two boosted articles. Before that my earnings tripled for some months - mind you I still wasn't in the 100 club but I've earned more since August.
I'm sorry to hear that this has happened to you as well, James. I went from earning around $200/day to about $25/day once the changes took effect on Aug.1. It seems pretty clear that the type of content I make (long-form business/tech articles) is no longer valued on the platform, despite pulling in a lot of views and read time. I have a suspicion they are having major financial issues behind the scenes. I'd love to know how much they paid writers total in July vs. August. The other weird thing I've noticed is the CEO keeps telling people to "write less" and that "quantity is not a virtue." What kind of content platform wants LESS content? I'm super bearish on Medium now. I plan to continue posting (less) just to see how things go, but I'm going to reprioritize my time to focus on my other revenue streams. Good luck to you. I'll be following along to watch your updates:) And congrats on getting monetized here!
Thanks Kristen and sorry to hear the same has happened to you. That is a brutal drop. Like you I'm recalibrating where I put my efforts. I'm committed to publishing really consistently for another month to see what happens ... I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt for a bit and trust that they're listening to their top writers because those top writers will flee otherwise. Once I cross the ad share threshold on RUclips I could see myself putting almost all my time into here. I think my issue with Medium is that it appears to be human managers directing a lot of funds with boosting now which results in a lot of inconsistency whereas RUclips's algo is very efficient and fact-based.
First, I recognized your name Kristen! The whole reason I subscribed is because I wanted to read a couple of your articles that kept coming up in search. I didn't know about the referral program, but I think I used your link to subscribe. Hope I did as your articles are why I joined. Anyways, I don't really subscribe to too many article type of websites, I usually just exit, but Medium always seems to have good content on many subjucts. I work in software engineering, so Towards Data Science always seems to pop up too when I'm searching also, and I knew that was a Medium publication, so thought joining would be worth it. Sorry to hear about your huge loss in revenue. Working in software, there are often uninteded outcomes that don't work as expected. Maybe, hopefully, this is one too that they will correct. Best wishes to you.
@@gilh57 Hey! Thank you for your supportive comment. I appreciate it. :) After taking a little time away from Medium for the last few weeks, I've decided to give it another go since I love the community there. Best wishes to you as well 💛
I am going through the same thing. My earnings have dropped considerably since August 1st. I've been on medium for two years and publish 4 to 5 times a week. Meanwhile, my dad is also a writer on medium and the new changes have helped him a lot. He writes 7 days a week and has about 400 stories. His our largely political. I'm just trying to determine what I can do to bounce back. I did it the last time they did a big overhaul, we just have to keep trying new things. Im going to try more personal stories less how to and give shortform a try too.
I think that probably makes sense, they rug-pulled read time to pay for comments. More controversial stuff like politics will probably do better, though I'm not exactly sure how that supports what they claim they're trying to accomplish.
I think the reason this might be happening is because they've recently opened up the partner program to a lot of new countries, with more to be added by the end of this year. Basically, now they have a lot more writers to pay.
I don't think that's it tbh ... to join the partner program now you need to be a paying member, so if there are more members that's more money in the system that should theoretically benefit people who've put years into building a back catalog
@@JamesJulianWealth There are lots of writers from countries like Indonesia, India, Philipines, mostly 3rd world countries with writers who have been paying members on medium and contributing to it for years. They might be looking to give these writers a large, well-deserved payout for all their years of free work. They recently delayed payment support to India and 2 other countries by another 3 months after announcing they'd start supporting us from August. There's quite a bit for medium to make up for. Just speculating here
@@arpitmehta2281 I would be shocked if this is the case. Under the new system, payment is heavily calculated on engagement metrics from YOUR followers (not just medium members anymore.) You know what? I think we need to give it a full month to really know what's going on. I'm also not convinced they'll stay with this model as it stands ... I think they'll be tweaking it as they go. I'll definitely do some updates.
@@JamesJulianWealth I don't know if you were old enough to remember this but before RUclips got big, Google blogs using blogger was the big thing. People used to get 5g, 10g,75g a month of their blogs in the mid 2000s to the late 2000s. Then the 2008 recession hit and Googles ad revenue was down. So Google had an internal meeting. They decided to strongly enforce their TOS with 40 to 80% of their blogs that were running AdSense (Their profit sharing creators ad revenue program that they installed on your blog. Google then over the course of two to three weeks just with no warning sent out emails to everyone making 5 to 70 grand a month informing them of TOS ( terms of service) violations...and simply just kept their money. No one to call. No person at Google to appeal to, no one to speak with. You were just making 50 k a month, and suddenly without warning, everything was turned off and now you make zero. Would love to hear your thoughts on the pros and cons of your experience with using substack vs medium some day. Just found your channel through your medium page and loving the content. Super helpful for beginners like me.
Hey there, glad you're finding it useful! Honestly I was mostly using Substack to push referred members to Medium, but Medium ended that program (and in my opinion, a huge competitive advantage they had over Substack). I'm starting to make more of an effort now to build on Substack because I DO think it's important to have an email list, but the earnings potential is limited for now.
@@JamesJulianWealth I just saw the vid you made about the change medium made to their partner program. That’s sucks! But thanks a lot for the insight to substack. I’ll look more into building an email list, it does seem to be the golden goose for a lot of writers and content creators in general.
It will be interesting to see how it goes. My earnings also took a huge drop. I also noticed I wasn't seeing any of my favourite writers in the home feed. That seems to have rectified itself as some of my favourites are now back. I'll look forward to your updates and learning from you. I love how you have collected so much data around it all. Great video.
I'm sure they're making adjustments on the fly re: the re-emergence of your fav writers. Will be interesting to see if and how they make more changes as we roll on here.
I think that it's probably still useful ... how useful is yet to be determined. It seems to be working fine for newer writers - it's just the long-time contributors who've been rug-pulled.
I couldn't agree with you more, everything you said is spot on. My trajectory on medium is similar to yours albeit i have a back catalog of 140 articles...since August my earnings have dropped 80%. It seems engagement, comments and claps make a big difference now, which means old articles, while they still get views, won't perform as well as before. Writing long form content becomes useless now considering they usually have lower read ratio. Why spend hours on an article that's not going to perform much better than a short one. Talk about medium shooting themselves in the foot.
Yep, I've cut my article length in half, which helps with the ratio, but it's definitely more superficial. I feel like newly published articles are close to the old earnings level but back catalogs have been annihilated unfortunately.
Obviously changes like this are very difficult to get right and achieve what they want, and hopefully they will tweak some things. I wonder if they're trying to incentivize new writers and readers to join in, trying to promote the popular "click-bait trending" thing that RUclips is obsessed with. Algorithms... they're a tough game.
Nobody was as big a cheerleader for Medium than me. I recruited a lot of writer friends. I had a decent number of referred members. I was doing well with many $1K-plus months, but now I wonder if I ought to delete most of my old stories and publish them elsewhere, where they can earn me money again.
Hi James, I literally just discovered your channel and Medium (I kinda knew it existed but didn't really realize the public could write for it!). Sorry to hear the new MPP has taken such a big chunk out of your income. I look forward to hearing how it goes in the next few weeks, to see if things pick up again with some new strategies. I wish you all the best!
@@TheCricketChamps07 I don't believe Pakistan is supported yet but there are plans to do so: blog.medium.com/partner-program-changes-are-rolling-out-now-456306d16cb9
Fingers crossed things start to get better. I started writing on Medium this week and I'm really excited about the journey. Quick question - should I spend time engaging with other Medium writers on the platform? If so, how much time a day do you recommend. Just trying to find ways to get some traction on my page. Thanks for all the sharing you're doing!
You should ABSOLUTELY be engaging with other writers. I spend at least 20-40 minutes per day reading, commenting, following writers I like, etc. It's crucial. I just do it at the gym on the stairs and get a workout at the same time.
Thank you so much for this! I haven't joined MPP yet, but I wanted to know how the new August update would affect writers' earnings. Hoping to see this is just a bug (finger crossed)!
James, thanks for another great post! I actually read about these changes when I dusted off my Medium account last month (which, I think, I originally opened almost a decade ago). That said, do you think it could be worthwhile to first post on one's blog, *then* to Medium? I didn't see anything mentioned about changes to copyright, etc., but figured it's worth an ask in terms of technique.
Hi Karyn! Yes, I've been thinking along the same lines as this ... I think this might be the thing that pushes me to launch my blogs and then use Medium as supplementary income. I know Zulie Rane has suggested posting to your own blog first. My only concern is writing 200 articles or something and then getting rejected by AdSense. It's way tougher to get into than it used to be.
@@JamesJulianWealth You could always consider writing, posting, dispersing, then republishing these as compilations via E-books (or, printed books if that's more your speed) you'd theoretically self-publish to retain copyright. HBR (Harvard Business Review) does this - they cherrypick articles that have already appeared in their print magazines and release them in categorical anthologies.
Like I said in the video, I'm willing to keep an open mind - and I do think they'll be tweaking things as they go along. I think we'll have a pretty clear picture of what's going on at the 2 week mark - watch for an update from me!!
Thank you for another informative video. My experience has been the opposite of yours. Between March 2022 and July 2023, I averaged $4.69 per month in earnings. Under the new program, between August 1st and August 6th, I made $14.27, and as you pointed out, about engagement, my stories had plenty of engagement in August. My stories before Aug 1st had less engagement. There were many that had claps only. There were some with responses. Less than a dozen out of three hundred had any highlights. Since August 1st, every story has had highlights, claps, and responses. At this point in time, I think that the highlights may be the main driver, which is a guess. By the end of October's report, I may have a clearer picture. Your videos have been a great help in understanding online writting. .
I'm noticing - and the caveat is that I am new to it - but that regardless of the tags allowed me to help promote a story, it is as if the story simply does not register. But individuals who share a close relationship with medium or those who hold positions in publications are those who are getting 3K-4K claps. Now, I'm wary of that because one story I published received one clap, but it shows that it was not read, which I would not see the point in clapping for something if you did not bother to read it. I commented that I did not know if I earned a penny or if I owed it. @@JamesJulianWealth

Sucks to hear it negatively impacting people that have been loyal, but sounds like me starting an account presently shouldn't be hit too hard by it due to no back catalogue. I dig their idea of more writing based on personal background/experience since that's probably what I'll I do and is probably what most people read for overall. I would try Substack but I just don't like the idea of asking for a personal subscription from people since I don't feel that important or consistent. I just do what I feel when I feel the need whether that's once a day/week/month, metrics like Medium/RUclips seem better for a person like me. The idea of accenting written work with a RUclips channel seems like a no brainer too, specially for someone like me who's done intense video editing over the years. Could end up being the bigger income maker long term. Also I'll make sure to keep articles shorter, makes sense for the current cultural climate with short form video...I hate it but if I have to break a big project into slightly smaller pieces at least it'll be out there for people to enjoy regardless. Good update on the changes tho, thanks:) Edit: Btw do you link to a PayPal on Medium as well and do you see any small side income in the form of direct donations/support at all? I'm always curious how inclined people are to do that vs subscription type stuff.

@@poklar Me too, with every passing day I get closer to saying I'm done. The moment I get ad share on RUclips might be my last day on Medium.
@@JamesJulianWealth What are Medium’s pay periods? How long will it take to know whether it’s a hiccup in their algorithm or something more?
@@poklar You're paid monthly, but you can see your pay any time you want, it's updated daily.
Got all the necessary information thanks for your video 💖❤️
You're welcome, thanks for watching!
It definitely incentivizes newer writers over old imo
Nobody was as big a cheerleader for Medium than me. I recruited a lot of writer friends. I had a decent number of referred members. I was doing well with many $1K-plus months, but now I wonder if I ought to delete most of my old stories and publish them elsewhere, where they can earn me money again.
I think ultimately I'm going to give it a couple months, but August is not looking promising at all
Any update?
Still sucks but not as bad as when I posted this video
Thanks for your update James. Been thinking and seeing the same things on it.
Thanks for watching!
I feel you, I got hit as well.
Sorry to hear that, it's been a rough month for a lot of people
Yup, also 70% drop here
Sorry to hear that ... are you trying to adjust your approach too?
With the earnings TANKING like this, is it even still worth it in almost 2024??
My RPM has turned a corner - I think they've changed the algo to get closer to the old system - video update coming
Hey James any new update?
Yes, hopefully this week
James, should we go back to earlier post and edit them to fit the new direction Medium has begun??? Thanks.
That's what I did ... I went back and deleted all my CTAs
Thank you! Always happy to see new faces here!
This is disappointing. Sorry to hear about your dropped earnings. I was just considering writing on Medium. Maybe not a good idea after all...
Many update videos coming this month
Can you make a video on how to join partner program newly anounced.
What country are you based in?
@@JamesJulianWealth Pakistan
@@TheCricketChamps07 I don't believe Pakistan is supported yet but there are plans to do so: blog.medium.com/partner-program-changes-are-rolling-out-now-456306d16cb9
I am waiting for funds and then moving to monumetrics cause I am done following algorithm rules :(.
Honestly it's not even the algorithm this time ... it's Medium deciding they know better than their readers and choosing who to boost.
Hey James, how are your earnings coming along?
Not great ... update soon
For me who made mpp in feb 23, who writes poetry on medium. My august 23 is a tiny bit better than my normal $10 dollar months
Good!
Thank you so much for this! I haven't joined MPP yet, but I wanted to know how the new August update would affect writers' earnings. Hoping to see this is just a bug (finger crossed)!
I think we'll have a much clearer picture when this month is over
Wow 72% drop.
yeah I'm hoping there's just a lag or something ... I assume they'll be tweaking the algo throughout the month
HBR (Harvard Business Review) does this - they cherrypick articles that have already appeared in their print magazines and release them in categorical anthologies.
have you ever considered Vocal.Media? less discoverability but i hear they pay for internal and external views.
Not really ... I did look at it but it's too small
Nice video as usual 🎉, thanks,
Do you think that drop from testing new features in tech industry we know an beta version isn't stable
Like I said in the video, I'm willing to keep an open mind - and I do think they'll be tweaking things as they go along. I think we'll have a pretty clear picture of what's going on at the 2 week mark - watch for an update from me!!
I SEE, BY THE WAY I WATCH ALL VIDEO TILL THE END @@JamesJulianWealth
@@football_monzer thanks, I really appreciate that!
Thank you for another informative video.
My experience has been the opposite of yours.
Between March 2022 and July 2023,
I averaged $4.69 per month in earnings.
Under the new program, between
August 1st and August 6th, I made
$14.27, and as you pointed out,
about engagement, my stories had
plenty of engagement in August.
My stories before Aug 1st had less engagement.
There were many that had claps only.
There were some with responses.
Less than a dozen out of three hundred had any highlights.
Since August 1st, every story has had highlights, claps, and responses.
At this point in time, I think that the highlights may be the main driver,
which is a guess.
By the end of October's report, I may have a clearer picture.
Your videos have been a great help in understanding online writting.
.
Hey I'm happy for anyone seeing a bump from this! Honestly I think comments are the main driver now.
Thank you for the reply.@@JamesJulianWealth
Man that sucks, I hope you can figure out how to get back up to your previous numbers. Congratulations on getting monetized!!!!
Thank you my friend - I'm working on it!
How does it look after 3 weeks @JGMoney?
Bad! I'll update this month's earning soon...

Hey James,
Why don't you build a community and raise your voice against a medium new partner program & policies.
There will be hundreds of writers there who get affected...
Connect with them!
Best of Luck for your Future Bro.
It is what it is ... it's their platform. Do I think they're making some big mistakes? Yeah, sure, but they need to figure that out on their own. I'll keep making honest reviews of my experience but I don't have time for anything beyond that. I'd rather put my time and effort into platforms that reward power contributors.
Can you tell me why im not able to monetize my medium, please help ......i have fullfilled every requirement, from 100 folkowers to being a member .... i even have stripe acc.... please help ....😢
Sorry but I don't know anything about your personal situation and I don't work for Medium! You need to get in touch with their support team!
Congrats on getting monetized on YT!
Thank you my friend - it's been a long road but I'm happy I stuck with it!
why not just repurpose the long form content as a new account?
That's an interesting idea, but I've put a year into building an audience that produces 1,000 views per day. I'm willing to test and learn over the next month at least before I do anything too drastic.
I think it’s worth the try, bro. I’m new to writing on medium, but I’ve been using it for years to learn. I see so much more potential in medium after your video. Don’t give up bro
Learn the new algorithms and hacks to make money and continue to teach us, bro!
@@autonate_ai Hey man, don't worry, like I said, I'm not ready to quit just yet. one thing I HAVE done is revive my Medium tutorial account, because suddenly it's making money again: medium.com/@jamesjmoney
Update video on that probably coming too
@@autonate_ai lol I'll try! Really appreciate your support!
I have a new story that I published today. 15 minute read time, ~60% read ratio. 11 views and i made .32 cents. I'll see how it goes
I'm definitely in wait-and-see mode ... I had a massive views/read-time day yesterday and made 1/4 of what I'm used to.
You keep posting things in your video, but your big head keeps blocking half (or more) of what you put up so that it makes it impossible to read/see what you are trying to share. Annoying.
Sorry you don't like them!
Good update on the changes tho, thanks:)
Edit: Btw do you link to a PayPal on Medium as well and do you see any small side income in the form of direct donations/support at all? I'm always curious how inclined people are to do that vs subscription type stuff.
"sounds like me starting an account presently shouldn't be hit too hard by it due to no back catalogue"
- Correct, but long-term earnings will be less than before
"I dig their idea of more writing based on personal background/experience since that's probably what I'll I do and is probably what most people read for overall"
- Maybe but that's not what drives read time a lot of the time
"The idea of accenting written work with a RUclips channel seems like a no brainer too, specially for someone like me who's done intense video editing over the years"
- Absolutely
"Btw do you link to a PayPal on Medium as well and do you see any small side income in the form of direct donations/support at all?"
Yes I do ... the amount is small but I really appreciate it because it comes from people who genuinely love my work
