HEAT FIRST TIME WATCHING will be uploaded Wednesday! Enjoy the day!
Wish i could hit up your patreon sometime! You may have encountered films like Lawrence of Arabia and The Bridge on the River Kwai by directed by David Lean. . . he is a master of the wide angle and amazing transitions! Super great pacing as well. or even some Stanley Kubrick films like 2001 Space Odyssey.
@James VS Cinema The pudding coupons frequent flier points is based on true story. So here for HEAT btw! Don't cut the bank heist plz! hey James, if this became the "PTA reaction" channel, I'd be down, lol. Seen Hard 8? It just got a remaster for blu, looks great (the DVD is dark ugly garbage): www.dvdbeaver.com/film9/blu-ray_review_133/hard_eight_blu-ray.htm
did you just say adam sandler seems like the kinda guy you could go golfing with? hilarious.
youve seen that movie, right?
edit:
"what in the french filmmaking"
'piano will be a *major key* '
bro
everyone talks about sandler’s breakout dramatic role being uncut gems, when punch drunk love and the meyerowitz stories are right there, and they’re so great! happy you’re watching this one :)
He's pretty amazing in FUNNY PEOPLE too.
Reign Over Me is pretty good too!
Meyerowitz stories is a great film wish it got more recognition, the dialogue in it is fantastic, and all the character interactions are so realistic and believable
Spanglish seems really underrated too, nobody seems to mention it
Fun fact: When Barry punches his office wall then rests a bloody hand on his piano, the cuts on his knuckles spell the word "love".
Which is also a reference from Night of The Hunter.
I think Barry Egan is one of PTAs most relatable characters.
I don't think anyone's gonna beat Scotty J from Boogie Nights lol.
RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman
Truly one of the greatest actors of his generation.
"The piano being a major key" Idk I found that funny :"D
Unintentional puns are the best ones
@@lddevo88 they are punintentional
That was pun-believable!
Can we all agree that Paul Thomas Anderson doesn't have a film that's less than a 8/10?
I kinda hate inherent vice tbh. Other than that I agree
Imo, Hard Eight (1996), his debut, is probably a 6/10 or a 7/10. Don't think it's a bad movie (it's got some really good acting and dialogue), but it doesn't have the depth and craft on display as pretty much anything afterwards.
Hard eight is like a 7. Otherwise all 9+
I couldn't tolerate or enjoy many moments of Inherent Vice.
I don't care for Inherent Vice but everything else yeah.
I said it once... I'll say it again, This movie is the Anti-Taxi Driver.
Could you elaborate?
I agree.
PDL is to Taxi Driver as Silent Running is to 2001: A Space Odyssey.
That’s a great description!
Next PTA MUST be The Master, an absolute masterpiece
Need to rewatch that. The opening shot still lingers in my mind.
@@ineverswag Mine too.. the ex girlfriend shot in the restaurant huh...
if he’s going chronologically, I’d imagine there will be blood next, then the master
I thought he already did There will be blood@@brianscli9567
Yes!! The master. I think that is pta best looking film
There is a fan theory that his character is actually Superman lol. His blue suit, his apparent superhuman strength :)
Not really a theory. It is.
@@randywhite3947 always wears blue suit, feels out of place in this world, girlfriend's initials are LL, gets super strength from woman he loves, evil henchman sends his goons out to do dirty work for him = Superman metaphor
@@pewburrito Plus unlimited *flight* miles
at the end when Barry plays the harmonium in sync with the score always brings warmth to me, he finally finds harmony and love in his life. GOD PTA is so good, his style really starts to mature here
I absolutely agree about the style! Before this movie, and up to Magnolia, PTA was more or less emulating his mentor and idol Robert Altman. This movie is the turning point in his career, where he really developed his own style and felt comfortable in his own skin. PDL remains one of his very best works, and grossly underrated by the public (and unironically, highly praised by critics). In a lot of ways, Phantom Thread explored this "Popeye" theme even more and with more nuances, and the result was also fantastic. I can't wait to see what PTA brings next, as I sincerely believe his best work is ahead of him still.
I believe that Sadler put on screen one of the first well-written and brilliantly embodied Asperger characters in PUNCH DRUNK LOVE...
Indeed. "99 cents."
Yea sir. More Paul Thomas Anderson reactions.
What a brilliant writer/filmmaker.
Indeed!!
"The piano is gonna be a major key"
yeah, you gotta love unintentional word plays lmao
The whole film is one big Superman allegory.
U should watch some Cohen Brother's movies. Such as The Big Lebowski, No County for old men, and Fargo.
Yes, yes, yes!!!
*Coen, but yes I agree
Need to watch Fargo and ILD. love the coen bros
I am a sucker for The Hudsucker Proxy, a great 40s-50s 'screwball' comedy ode. Also, special mention for 'O, brother. Were art thou' a fantastic retelling of Odysseus in 30s America but also a landmark movie that showed Hollywood the power of 100% digital color grading. The Coen brothers have an impressive body of work.
Inside Llewyn Davis, too!
yea, Barry is one of the most relatable characters i've seen in a film, Sandler has that "everyman" quality to him which grounds the performance, all those little tics and reactions he mutters to himself are so true to life
I really didn't know what to make of Punch Drunk Love when I first watched it. It was so different from the previous two PTA movies I'd seen, Boogie Nights and Magnolia. But over time, it's become one of my favorite films, quite possibly in part because I relate to Barry more than practically any other fictional character. I only have the one sister, but she's more than enough to make me feel utterly worthless.
Paul Thomas Anderson, filmmaking wise, drew heavily from Robert Altman, so I would recommend the films "3 Women" and/or "The Player" directed by Robert Altman. 👍
When James laughed after the tire-iron shot, he was all of us.
The sound design for this movie is next level amazing and this role seems custom tailored for Adam Sandler. A hidden masterpiece from PTA...
Anderson actually called Adam Sandler and asked if he could write a movie for him, so it was absolutely tailored for him
@@davidn5269 ...oh wow, that would make sense...thanks for that info!
"That's that, mattress man." I say that all the time.
Anyone's face ever light up in recognition of that when you say it?
Easy to miss: when Barry is first in the grocery store, Emily Watson is out of focus in the back stalking him. They are truly meant to be together.
I can’t believe my favourite reactor is watching my favourite movie of all time!!!!!!
Anderson does an amazing job of getting into someone’s head who deals with extreme nervousness around people. I was like that too for a long time in my life. The way Sandler reacts when the car turns down the alley at the beginning, the way he goes “whoa whoa whoa” and then starts nervously drinking out of his coffee mug. Exactly how people with social anxiety act.
Comedic actors seem to possess an ability to tap into a level of darkness and despair that I don't see in many dramatic actors. I guess it makes sense because lots of great comedy is rooted in a very dark place.
One of Sandlers most memorable and complex roles. Love this movie!
Also to note; the music and sound mixing throughout the film is phenomenal.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. You simply cannot look away from it. You caught so much of the hidden emotion, reflected in the framing and color saturations. Good job reacting to a difficult flick. So little actually happens, but so much going on. Thanks for bringing attention to this riveting, disturbing minor masterpiece.
PTAs Magnolia is still one of my all time favorites too. Too bad it runs over 3 hours, so it is hard to react to.
BTW That is Shelly Duval singing 'He Needs Me', written by Harry Nilsson for the movie Popeye.
You’re helping this jaded filmmaker remember why I ever got into film to begin with. Because of films like this. Thank you for this channel James!
Wow! Much love Brandon!!
"What's your name, sir!!!" His delivery on that line makes me laugh every time.
This film is Anderson's response to Magnolia. As much as he admired what he accomplished with it, he later stated that it felt bloated and wanted to scale everything down, not only with length but in scale of the story. He wanted to do something low key, and tap into the underlining manic of the early performances of Adam Sandler. This is his best performance, and his best career moment is not being able to keep it together in the restaurant...not in the bathroom, but the redness and embarrassment he felt at the table.
I also love the chaotic use of watercolors as transitions. I interpret it as a metaphor for his life, as it's always feeling rushed and rough...and then, in one moment, it's at peace, and that happens when he goes to confront the Mattress Man. That's the last time we saw those transitions, and that's the last time Barry allowed anyone to walk right over him.
It's such a great movie.
Underrated film. Hard for some to get into but I always enjoyed it. I've had diagnosed bouts of crippling anxiety in the past & really feel for Sandler's character. Please check out "Silver Linings Playbook" if you haven't seen it yet
"SLP " such an enjoyable film!
The sound design has so many details: the truck when they're walking out of the restaurant plays the main melody of the soundtrack, Barry unspooling the tape is replicated in the soundtrack, hidden voices calling Barry while he looks at the pudding and thinks of going to Hawaii ("Come here, Barry")... Genius and a work of art.
The way color is used in this film is astounding.
For me, this is by far my all time favorite romance film. it embodies a different mood that other "rom -com" movies tend to not explore. PTA is an incredible filmmaker, and I look forward to the day you react to The Master.
I LOVE this film. Every time I watch it I see something new.
"That piano is going to be a major key" - Piano pun.
My girlfriend and I just got a matching Punch Drunk Love tattoo. I love that your first time watching it you enjoyed it. I had the opposite reaction and my favorite filmmaker is PTA but we both couldn’t get it out of our head and we watched it again and again and again and bought the criterion release and now we’re die hard fans lol!
One of Sandler's best performances ever. Great reaction yo.
Greatest superhero film ever made
Definitely
Man James really is my favourite RUclipsr on here. Best film related RUclipsr on here!
That’s love!!
PTA’s most underrated film along with Inherent Vice and Hard Eight. Looking forward to seeing your reaction to the rest of PTA’s films.
First time I watched Punch Drunk Love was in film school, where our instructors used it to teach us color theory for film. Of all the films we studied, this one stuck with me the most. So happy to see you cover it. Keep up the great work.
What are the other films that were shown at your film school for the color theory in film?
@@ayubnor0 Hero with Jet Li, Vertigo by Alfred Hitchcock, Ran by Akira Kurosawa. In the Mood For Love is another movie that makes great use of color theory, but we actually watched that one while studying shot framing.
Hey man. I myself am an aspiring filmmaker and honestly seeing you enjoy all these films I’ve seen you enjoy brings a warmth to my ole heart. Film is such an important and necessary gift. Keep being you brother.
Reign Over Me is another well done Sandler serious film
It's always fun to watch a comedic actor do a more serious role. If you've never seen Truman Show with Jim Carrey it's a must watch.
Other more serious movies Adam Sandler did that were good: "Reign Over Me", and "Funny People".
I tuned into this just to hear you react to the colors and light I saw and loved when I first saw it. Sublime rythm and tone. Kudos for watching and making feel less alone in loving those elements
You have to watch Emily Watson’s debut film “Breaking the waves” by Lars Von Trier ...amazing
i remember reading that after Magnolia got so much acclaim, some reporter in a press conference asked PTA what his next film would be. he said it would be a romantic comedy starring Adam Sandler. everyone laughed thinking it was a joke. this is my second favorite PTA movie behind There Will Be Blood, and one of my fav movies of all time.
SOO happy about this reaction. This film is easily in my Top 3 films of all time
I just really really really wanna rewatch this movie after this reaction. You know it's good when watching a cut up reaction makes you desperate to watch the whole thing.
Oh damn I didn't get the notification! This is my favorite PTA movie, it just hits all marks for me, I also think this movie is where you can see PTA's work evolving, with a much more off beat story.
I truly enjoyed this video. You made exactly the same insights i made while watching this film it was fun to watch. Im looking forward to watch other vids on your channel. I love this movie a lot
Nice pun. Piano being a major key.
I own a CD of the soundtrack for this. LOVE how unconventional the original score for this is. Really brings you into his chaotic, anxious headspace and I think it’s genius and executed expertly!!!
movie suggestions:
chinatown
dead mans shoes
out of sight
once upon a time in america
the limey
The Sopranos - TV show suggestions ofc
Dead Mans Shoes will blow his mind
My favourite low budget thriller
I love Out of Sight
Dead mans shoes is so good!
Can’t wait to see your reactions to The Master and Inherent Vice. This and those two are like the most perfect movies for me
I just saw this theory the other day that this movie is a superman movie in disguise 👀 his office is the fortress of solitude, he’s always wearing blue, he seems to have super strength when he breaks the ‘unbreakable’ plunger handle and destroys the bathroom, he seems to fly when he jumps off that ledge thing, he wants to get frequent flyer miles to ‘fly’ places, lena’s name is similar to lois’s, and at the end the mattress man is wearing a long black cape which could be a reference to zod sooo👀 that could all be some hooplah but if it’s true this is automatically my favorite superhero flick😂
Also the plunger handle resembles a crystal in the fortress of solitude
Punch Drunk Love > Uncut Gems. Any day. Love Sandler. I highly recommend checking out the press conference for this at the Cannes film festival back in 02. Very entertaining.
Agreed. I love Uncut Gems but PDL is untouchable.
Oh my, I sisn't even know I wanted you to watch this so bad until now. This is a truly great thing.
I like how so many reactors purport to have an appreciation for cinema but then proceed to talk over TONS of dialogue.
I have Been rewatching all you're videos and I love you're vlog hopefully we will get more of that in the future.
Lost count on my watches of this film. One of those movies I could just put on in the background of what ever I'm working on and feel like I'm spending time with an old friend.
my second favorite movie of all time! so happy to see this commentary (:
I thought the blue suit represented Barry having the blues. That was Emily following him in the supermarket. She wanted to see what he was like before she agreed to meet him.
This is my favorite movie of all time
Have you seen The Fountain, that movie was very beautifully shot and the score was amazing
My favorite film. Ever. You gave me something to think about with the color blue. Listen to that scene with the sisters talking shit about Barry at the party, not knowing he's there--listen with headphones. The mixing is very intentional.
Haven’t clicked this fast since... something. 👍
Conversate = legit word. "Take that!" Lol
This is one of those movies that demands 2-3 viewings before you even begin to understand it
So happy I got to see you see this.
Your Jazz analogy is right on point
Just rewatched it recently and can confirm it’s in my top 5 of all time. Glad to see you enjoyed it and your reactions were similar to mine watching.
It's funny when you talked about his anger management mode cause Sandler was also in the movie Anger Management that came out the year after
Not sure why it took me so long but I finally watched this film and wow it's great. Paul Thomas Anderson and his signature camera movements creates such an energy and pacing in his films, the silhouette scene is great, as is the karma with the bad guys. Philip Seymour Hoffman is so great even in this small part.
One of my favorite P.T.A films!!!
My favorite PTA film. I won't say I recognize myself in Barry, but I think I know where he's coming from. And yeah, his smothering, condescending sisters had me on edge. Fun fact: in the first supermarket scene, an out-of-focus Lena can be seen following Barry.
One of my fav films, and I think it’s definitely on par with “There will be blood” as his best.
It's funny I saw the art house people didn't like it because it had Adam Sandler and the Sandler's fans didn't like it because it was an art house film. It's really great people came around on it years later. Sandler's performance is really really good. The direction from PTA is great but his writing should get more credit as I believe he's one of the more underrated ones
love your channel man! PTA is the best!
The small piano representes the random opportunities life give you randomly he can choose to learn to play or not. Same with the girlfriend and the flyer miles. Random opportunities coming at him.
Ha! So glad James watched this one! Checking out the reaction video now.
Love that you're doin PTA reactions! Gotta do The Master next :)
Great reaction James, love this film, next to Hard Eight I think this is PTAs most underrated film, Barry's character being Superman is an interesting theory, his blue suit he always wears, fun to look up
best superman movie ever.
My favorite PTA! The pudding dance and the most cathartic punches/beat down
sequence of all time PLUS the anxiety ridden score and the colors! I love the way he does romance, very offbeat and oddly dark. Wait til you get to Phantom Thread! With PTA he sorta just keeps getting better and better as far as cinematography goes. So glad you’re going through his stuff.
This film is great. I really appreciated this when it came out and watched it several times in a couple years.
Recommendation for you: Stay (2005). Brilliant cast: Ewan McGregor, Naomi Watts, Ryan Gosling.
You should look up the mattress man extra that was on the DVD. It's only a minute long at most and you should be able to find it for free on RUclips. I think you'd get a kick out of it.
Sandlers best performance and my second favourite PTA film.
The great Robert Smigel at 6:57 as Walter. Great comedy writer and the creator and performer of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. Also, the movie world is a lesser place without Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Such a great actor and sorely missed.
My favorite Adam Sandler movie!!!
I think Sandler really made a statement with "Funny People" in a more raw role that seems to help him make that jump to Uncut Gems. . .
I used to have lots of anxieties plus being an introvert intensifies it. We are very critical of ourselves, so the one time we did something wrong, there will be no breather because it has disrupt the flow of the day.
The cinematographer for this masterpiece is Robert Elswit, who's also worked on every Paul Thomas Anderson film (except for his most recent one which Anderson actually shot himself). Elswit won an Oscar for Anderson's most acclaimed film There Will Be Blood and also shot the movie Nightcrawler (one of my all time favorites).
Keep on saying , Todd Solonz - Happiness, please!
I was kinda young when this came out, studying film myself. Wes Anderson, Cohen Brothers, this was all new to me, especially with color grading and emphasis on lighting and framing. I for some reason couldn't stop watching it. . . I don't know why. . . Sandler made everything pretty real with his acting
Yes!
This movie has such a good example of social anxiety that it gave ME social anxiety just watching it
