In this video we are taking a look a basic basket or basket weave stamping for leather including how to correctly overlay the stamp and the use of multiple parallel guidelines. This is a beginner's video so will hopefully help someone out, the next video will be all about glue!

Thank You Ian! By far, one of the best channels for learning leathercraft here on RUclips.

hey dude, i am from california, miss your videos. you were one of the first leathercrafter i started following. you are still one of the best leather crafter. i still struggle very much with my leather crafting after more than 5yrs of doing it. one thing i have learned about learning is what is simple for me might not simple for another person. you are a very smart person, my guess is your background is some type of software or other type engineering. i have a mechanical engineering person who schools me on what i do wrong. most of the time i don't understand what he is telling me. i am a good very good athlete but always did very poorly in school. please keep making videos

Thanks Ian, another great video to guide people starting out. Nice to see you’re putting a few videos out again recently - reminds me of a lot of your earlier ones, they taught me loads and kept my interest going. Hope you are keeping as healthy as can be during these strange times we’re in now. Stay safe.

Thank you, that's great. I have tried stamping basketweave without guidelines before now and noticed how uneven it gets. Brilliant tips.

Great vid Ian as always. Very easy for the weave to creep. That tip definately helps!!

The common engineering term for the "creep" that happens with regard to keeping the basket weave parallel is called "accumulative error". It is very common when trying to align multiple objects. This error in basket weaving can also be present in the 90 degree alignment when trying to weave around an "island" within the design. To accommodate for both directions I take a cheap plastic triangle and trim the long leg to meet the total stack up of three widths of the stamp (like in your video). When working around the island, I can then use the short leg of the triangle to keep the stamp in alignment in both directions.

Ian do you ever place packing tape on underneath of the leather. I have found that the leather starts to curl and stretch from punching!

Excellent Video Ian. I usually use my awl to make the first guideline. Then I use an 8B or 6B pencil to make parallel lines across the leather about 3 to 4 rows wide. These pencil lines let me know if my stamping lines start to wander. I use 8B or 6B pencil because they erase very easily and you do not have to push very hard to make an line on the leather. Thank you very much for this important information. Take care, stay safe.

Great tutorial, I've found that basket weave is harder to stamp than it looks. One day I may post my failures so we can all have a good laugh.
