She also said she did not want to die. James knows he did it for himself more than for her.

The reason why Silent Hill 2 it became a classic is because eventually people began to see how unique, eerie, melancholic and authentic the game's atmosphere it really is, and took the time to enjoy its deeply thoughtful narrative and symbolism. To this day it’s by far one of, if not the most mature examination of grief, sexual trauma, suicide, and morality all combined. It’s an intelligent game that does not hold anyone’s hand and comes at the player with utmost confidence in itself. It’s fantastic stuff. The rest of the original 4 are great in their own right and have their own well written stories, but they don’t hold the same emotional weight to them. I think SH2’s maturity by comparison is something that a lot of people are drawn to. ☯️

Something to consider as well…[SPOILER ALERT]
During the “In Water” ending, the ending which leads us to believe would be the canonical ending of the game, after James talks about hating Mary, she replies, “You’ve killed me, and you’re suffering for it. It’s enough, James.” She then proceeds to die again one last time in front of him. While he takes this as the realization that he cannot live without Mary, this also seems like, while not as much of a forgiving ending as the “Leave” ending, is still a forgiveness of sorts. Mary (or more likely, the spirit of the town itself) has seen James’ struggle and has deemed that he has endured enough pain and punishment that he has reached almost a level of purgation. The spirit of the town recognizes James’ penitent spirit, yet James couldn’t recognize it himself, and that makes it so much more tragic in my opinion.

9:07 - 10:14 almost made me cry. it's almost like poetry, illustrating just how devastating the game felt and just how sad it was into words

id like to think that the entirety of silent hill 2 is partly mary's doing. it has nothing to do with the cult, all the monsters, especially pyramid head, seem to exist solely so james can confront what he's running away from and heal. the monsters will put him through hell, and they will kill him if he fails, but the pyramid heads suicide at the end tell me that that was their goal. for james to heal and move on. I kept wondering why the town of silent hill went after james when he had nothing to do with the cult, why was silent hill 2 always seperate from the others. maybe the answer is different, maybe the town just passively does that to anyone that has their own demons destroying them. but I'd like to think it was mary, resting in the town where she was last happy with her husband, using it's powers over the mind to guide james. silent hill wouldn't show him his wife one last time, help him have one final talk. i think mary called him and was waiting for him, waiting for him to realize everything that had happened and to finally come to her and get closure. idk if the theory is right but it just sounds so beautiful and thematically cohesive to me. it's what I like to believe sometimes

I agree with some of this video to an extent... not 100%. Interesting analysis of the depiction; however Silent Hill is just a place. The characters already processed their trauma; the events monsters that followed was due to result of behavioral health crisis experienced by the character. Not what the town made. This brings more light into the realization that places aren't haunted, people are. When behavioral crisis occurs this is their mental state and what was already created themselves.

I remember getting this game from my local gamestop it came with born from a wish dlc and was astounded by how a psychological horror game can effect you this much, the game makes you believe James is innocent and killing his wife with a pillow is just untrue and at the same time gives the illusion from James's point of view on the hotel, then shows us the realization that James in fact did kill Mary and all of a sudden his world starts crumbling down and he accepts the truth, it's so heart breaking I remember crying after listening to Mary's letter 😭
